Healthy People And Enhancement Drugs

According to a new study, people's willingness to take a pill or drug depends on whether the trait the drug promises to enhance is one they consider fundamental.

As many young people without diagnosed disorders or deficits take Ritalin or Adderall to improve concentration or anti-depressants to lift their moods, this study examines what makes healthy people willing to take pills.

"We suggest that people's willingness to take psychological enhancements will largely depend on beliefs about whether those enhancements will alter characteristics considered fundamental to self-identity," the authors write.

they found that participants responded more positively to a drug promising to help them become "more than who you are," than one that would allow them to become "who you are

The most common reason participants said they wouldn't want to take a pill was because it would "fundamentally change who I am."

In a news conference on Friday, August 15th, to be held in California, the DNA results of a probable new species of primate, call it “Bigfoot,” “Georgia Bigfoot,” or “Georgia Gorilla,” if you wish, will be announced. You have read the press release already.

Is it real? It certainly looks like the real deal, and with a surprising variety of features.

The hominoid (please note, not hominid) body, found in the Georgia woods, is now in a secure location, under armed guard, and set to be examined by a battery of academic scholars, skeptical scientists, Bigfoot researchers, and debunking writers.

Will further tests and the proposed live capture of others prove beyond a doubt that Bigfoot is a new species? Stay tuned.

DARPA today has a long-term, $3 billion program to help make such a “Metabolically Dominant Soldier.” In other words, the military is studying how to use technology and biology to meld man and machine and transcend the limits of the human body. Described the project director, “My measure of success is that the International Olympic Committee bans everything we do" The $3 billion program is definitely trying to achieve transhuman performance goals.

The wearable gear would enable running at 100 meter olympic sprinter speed for hours and the 7 foot vertical leap, the wall crawling, personal flight, invisibility, greatly enhanced strength, better body armor and carrying bigger and more powerful weapons.

New Firefox Web browser to be released Tuesday

Hopefully with the official release, it can be resolved. I can't wait to try it out. But like others, I have extensions that have become part of my internet life. :~)

New Firefox Web browser to be released Tuesday

A new version of the Firefox Web browser is scheduled for release Tuesday with improvements in security, speed and design.

Many of the enhancements in Firefox 3 involve bookmarks. The new version lets Web surfers add keywords, or tags, to sort bookmarks by topic. A new "Places" feature lets users quickly access sites they recently bookmarked or tagged and pages they visit frequently but haven't bookmarked.

Yahoo is the only Web service initially supported. To use rivals like Google Inc.'s Gmail and Microsoft Corp.'s Hotmail, developers of those services will have to enable that capability first.

Go kick the tires and light the fires of Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1, which is now available for download at the Mozilla Firefox site. The update delivers a few aesthetic changes, as well as what Mozilla is calling major security enhancements. Users should also expect increased performance and stability for applications like Google Mail. There's an exhaustive list of known bugs to squash too, but that's par for the course with any software. [

Bangkok - Thai provincial officials have allowed a new "human zoo" featuring "long-necked" or "giraffe" women to open in Sattahip near Bangkok despite mounting international criticism of the exploitative tourism practice, media reports said Monday. The residents are part of an ethnic group whose women wear brass rings around their necks as status symbols and beauty enhancements. They are called the Padung or long-necked Karen in Thailand, but they consider those terms denigrating and call themselves Kayan

Firefox 3 Add-On Solves Memory Woes

The first Firefox 3 beta is just around the corner and promises a number of enhancements, including a reduction of the notoriously large memory footprint. We've written extensively about Firefox's memory problems in the past and while Firefox 3 will address some of the issues, it won't solve the problem for everyone.

Part of Firefox’s memory overhead is by design. Whenever you visit a page in Firefox, the browser caches it for some time. If you frequently go back and forth between pages this cuts down on load time, but the trade off is increased memory usage.

RAMback simply adds a menu item to the tools menu (pictured above) that allows you to quickly dump your caches. If you assign a keyboard shortcut to it, you’ve got a quick, simple way to dump caches whenever you need to.

Genetic engineering is getting serious. Recently researchers have shown that otherwise "hardwired" or innate responses, such as fear, can be manipulated and even reversed, that extreme muscle growth is possible, and that sexual preference can be changed. Genetic manipulations like these go well beyond the promised cosmetic enhancements – such as changing skin and eye color – and may in fact allow us to become the drivers of our species' evolution.

But are we capable of handling our newfound god status? If we could create a fearless, well-fed, disease-free world, would this lead to a golden age of peace, love, and understanding, or will it be business as usual?

add to these developments the recent experiments in what you could call "directed selection" – the ability to knockout certain genes to produce a change in behavior or physiology – and we're well on the way to becoming masters of our own destinies.

The growing likelihood that, within the next decade, the fastest humans alive will be "disabled" holds the potential for profound "future shock." As I wrote about last year (in "The Accidental Cyborg"), young athletes facing the choice between rehabilitation and amputation for leg injuries are starting to pick amputation, knowing that the prosthetics could be an improvement, not an impairment.

Oscar Pistorius, AKA "Blade Runner" -- the South African sprinter who uses carbon fiber prosthetics in place of the lower legs amputated as a child -- has officially lost his bid to run in the 2008 Olympics. He's going to give one last appeal to the International Association of Athletics Federations, but his chances of success are slim. The official reason, according to the BBC:

"...his prosthetic limbs give him an advantage over able-bodied opponents..."

For now, Pistorius' artificial legs make him fast, but still human-fast (he came in second at a recent meet); although his prosthetics reduce his energy requirements by 25%, he has yet to hit the qualifying speed for the 400m race. It's entirely possible that, even had the IAAF accepted his bid, he wouldn't have made it to this Olympics.

But it's also entirely possible that, in 2012, he'd be breaking records right and left. And shortly thereafter, he wouldn't be alone in doing so.

The GeckoTIP extension provides Tablet PC Input Panel support in Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, and Flock. It is a fork of the TPCTIP project intended to patch outstanding bugs, create a stable extension offering context-sensitive pen input in Firefox, and add useful extra enhancements for Tablet PC and UMPC users in Firefox.

GeckoTIP currently only provides context sensitivity under Windows Vista (no floating TIP).

1) If you've specified a web address in any Item - you can visit it by clicking on the link next to the field.

2) If you've specified e-mail address in any Item - you can click next to the field to e-mail the person in the Item

3) Single-click dialing via Skype-out has been fixed

4) You can now copy an Item from one Record to another from Item Details mainenance, simply pull up an item you'd like to copy and at the bottom of the screen you'll see a pull-down menu to select a Record to copy to and a button next to it to actually do the copy.
