Are we a nation of whiners, as Phil Gramm put it a little while ago? No, the American public is not whining...More likely, though, Americans are just leaving the whining to pundits and trend reporters. Our problem is not whining. It is persuading young people that, with baby boomers retiring, entitlement programs bulging and the world economy growing ever more competitive, now's the time to roll up the sleeves for something other than tattoos.

For example, India produces 2.5 million college graduates every year (with concentrations in high demand fields - electronics, programming, engineering, accounting, etc.), and approximately 90,000 MBA's. Nothing against tattoos, but I do feel ignorance and apathy are much too prominent in America. Awareness of ignorance is the first step to wisdom.

Never mind that GDP is puttering along in positive terrain. Headlines still scream that we're closing in on 1929, not 2009.

Meanwhile, Prius cars are flying off the Toyota lots, even though they cost $3,700 more than a similarly sized gasoline-fired Toyota and it takes 3.5 years to pay back the investment in fuel savings.

In July the jobless rate among college graduates was just 2.4%, drifting up from 2.1% in March. That is miles away from the 1981 recession and, of course, you'd need scientific notation to compare it to the Great Depression

For some, it still feels lousy out there. But lousy is not a technical synonym for recession.

Still, no president, Democrat or Republican, can create prosperity for those who decide to forgo even a basic education.

High schools don't teach what they used to, and so students who don't go to college are left without the skills necessary to compete in a global economy.

In a 2006 gubernatorial debate, the soon-to-be governor of Alaska trotted out the usual creationist education canard: "Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of education. Healthy debate is so important, and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both."

Turtlewings stages, workshops and other activities put “the idea” in the forefront. We put equal emphasis on the process of making the idea a reality, reflecting on the process and the outcome and deciding what happens next. In each project we encourage the child to put down his ideas and make a plan of what he wants to make or do. With this particular stage we took this one step farther and introduced the idea of creative journaling. Each child received a journal in which they worked in each day on either focused activities or individual ideas. Each journal became a unique expression of the child and their ideas, theories, inventions, and interests.

We need to recognize that there isn't a single solution, such as creating small schools or charter schools. We need to rely on good data and good judgment about what works. And we need to have the patience to support sustained efforts.

We know that early childhood education sets the stage for school success, especially for children living in poverty.

We must invest in good practice.

Much is a stake regarding the decisions we make for all our children, and it is nothing less than our democratic way of life. If we decide that we want to invest in education, the results for the country will be great: global competitiveness, scientific discoveries and productive citizens.

We, the people, must acknowledge our responsibility in driving the issues of this election cycle. And then needed presidential leadership will follow.

Legal cases mount up over schoolyard injuries

CHILDREN are suing schools for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for injuries caused while playing games such as tiggy.

Nearly 100 lawsuits were filed against the State of Queensland for injuries suffered by schoolchildren in the last financial year.

One child is asking the court to award her $280,000 plus interest after she hurt herself playing tiggy (chase) in the schoolyard when she was six.

Another launched a lawsuit last month claiming more than $136,000 for an injury she says she suffered while high jumping during a Sunshine Coast school carnival.

The revelation that schoolyards are becoming fertile ground for litigation follows public outcry over the banning of cartwheels, handstands and somersaults at a north Queensland school and admissions by Education Minister Rod Welford that fear of legal action was partly behind the decision.
