Strictly as a fan of business hardball, you have to tip your cap to the Scandinavian team of Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis. First the founders of Skype got eBay to pay close to $3 billion for the Net telephony pioneer while somehow retaining control of its key technology. And now, after being snubbed in their attempt to buy the company back, they’ve won themselves a healthy chunk in exchange for that technology, while putting a beat-down on a friend-turned-enemy for good measure. Nicely played, gents.

I often referred to them as the "Apple" of online shoes when telling my friends about the service. That is to say, like Apple, Zappos was much more than just a product or service company for me - it was a brand that I wanted to be associated with. Naturally, I've been very interested in how this acquisition plays out. Bezos has often lauded the culture and acumen of Zappos but as this article points out, how much longer will Amazon allow Zappos to continue using ChoiceStream (product recommendations) as well as PayPal when both are owned by Amazon rival eBay...

How to get a Google Wave Invite

* If you get an invitation and go to sign up, and are presented with anything that tries to sell you something, back away as it's probably a scam.
* Be careful! As with any big thing, spammers and scammers are trying to take advantage. If in your quest for Google Wave you're asked to scan for viruses or provide financial information, turn around- you're being scammed.

Search eBay for an invitation. A few Google Wave invite owners are selling on the site. You can bid, but beware eBay is deleting some of these listings because selling a Google Wave invite is like selling someone else's intellectual property.

Google Wave has been released, and many are offering invites. How can you tell what's legitimate and what isn't, and more importantly, how can you get a legitimate invite?

Go to the Google Wave signup page and request an invitation. The link is on this page.

Wait. And wait. Eventually, you'll get an invite. Probably not today or tomorrow... but someday.

Ask a friend who got an invitation to issue you an invite if they receive any extras. In the words of Google: “We’ll ask some of these early users to nominate people they know also to receive early invitations...If all goes well we will soon be inviting many more to try out Google Wave.”

You can also go to twitter and search for Google Wave. There are people offering invites in exchange for you following/retweeting. However you need to be especially wary of scams, as many of these are not legit.
