Sarah Bernhardt, a famous actress, tried her hardest to woo him but he considered her to be little more than a distraction from inventing a death ray. When asked about marriage, he replied: “I do not think you can name many great inventions that have been made by married men.”

he was famous for his violent anger towards those he felt had spited him. He spent years hounding Gottfried Leibniz over the discovery of calculus. He kept a list of all the sins he had committed in his life and it included such horrible things like: “Making pies on Sunday night”, “squirting water”, and “peevishness.”

Engineer becomes successful artist after stroke rewires his brain

clipper's remarks: Desperately looking for something to relieve his boredom but with little strength to perform everyday tasks, he picked up a pencil and started doodling on paper.

'I just started pencilling these abstract patterns,' he said. 'I wasn't actually drawing anything, just letting my hands do whatever my brain was telling them.

'I couldn't hold the brush properly yet I just had these urges to draw. It was bizarre because before the stroke I'd never been the arty type. I hated it in school.'

Doctors convinced the abstract musings were the result of a rewiring of the brain encouraged Ken to develop his new found hobby.

'My doctor told me following a stroke your brain usually rewires itself to avoid the damaged bits and often leads to discovering hidden talents,' he said.

Bachelor Ken started transferring his work to computers and within months had become an expert in digital imagery and had even created his own software.

Ken Walters suffered multiple spine fractures and massive internal injuries when he was crushed against a wall by a fork lift truck when a driver lost control.

The horrific accident left him wheelchair-bound and jobless and triggered a 19-year depression. Two life-threatening heart attacks deepened his gloom.

And when things looked like they couldn't get any worse, Mr Walters suffered a stroke at his home in 2005.

But incredibly the cerebral haemorrhage turned out to be an astonishing piece of good fortune.

Now, after his early doodles developed into advanced digital images, Mr Walters has created his own software and been snapped up by computer giant EA games at the age of 51.

Mr Walters has already netted a cool £30,000 from his back bedroom creativity.

Now I wouldn't change my life for anything.'

And now I've found the biggest passion I've ever had in my life. It's remarkable.

My creative beast is restless and hungry, and I’ve learned that if I starve it by arbitrarily limiting its routine, it’s not happy. It’s all well and good to cut the fat out of your life to make time for what’s important, but you can take it too far. By turning off the internet, I turned off my source of inspiration. I was trying to write in a vacuum.

nobody shits a masterpiece

The truth is that creativity is much more about combining the self-discipline to tolerate ambiguity with the will to transform the results into something meaningful. It’s not really contradictory; it’s largely an issue of intentionality and attention.

And, yeah, “talent” doesn’t hurt either, but there’s no way to even discover if you have talent until you’ve made a lot of crap and an occasional good thing, and find a way for that all to be okay. Plus, anyone can tell you, “talent” is like having a nice ass or a rich father; it helps open doors, but the actual work on the other side of the door is all on you.

The National Center for Research in Advanced Information and Digital Technologies will focus on "bringing education into the 21st century."

Supporters said classrooms have failed to keep up with technology innovations.

The Federation of American Scientists said, "The creativity that developed extraordinary new information technologies has not focused on finding ways to make learning more compelling, more personal and more productive in our nation's schools.

"People assumed that the explosion of innovation in information tools in business and service industries would automatically move into classrooms."

That, the Federation said, has simply not happened.

clipper's remarks: This is an amazing story of a man born with spastic cerebral palsy. Though disabled in many ways, he taught himself to create detailed pictures using one finger on a typewriter that resembled pencil or charcoal drawings. Another tribute to the indomitable human spirit.

Paul Smith, the man with extraordinary talent was born in Philadelphia on September 21, 1921 with severe cerebral palsy.

Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech & mobility but also taught himself to become a master artist as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid of a formal education as a child.

'When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one. Since he couldn't press two keys at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the top of the number keys. In other words, his pictures were based on these characters .... @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ .

As his mastery of the typewriter grew, he developed techniques to create shadings, colors, and textures that made his work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings.'

Just as your subconscious can work on problems while you do something else, your subconscious can also work on a task while you sleep on it. Here is an exercise to help you prepare to sleep on a problem.

Get a piece of paper and write down a one-sentence summary of your problem or project. Then write down a few related keywords. Review the problem in your mind for a few minutes and make a conscious request to yourself to think about this problem while you sleep. Now, forget about it and go to sleep. As soon as you awaken, look at the piece of paper and read the summary and keywords. Chances are, some interesting ideas will come to mind. Write these down and review them later. You may find that the answer to your problem has come to you in your sleep.

#2 The Urban Beast Project began when I was given 800 stuffed animals from a photoshoot for the Delias Clothings Company. (to give you an idea of what 800 stuffed animals looks like, they completely filled the Martin's Pretzel Chevy Van). I shot some portraits, made a Voyager's outfit for a wedding, gave away a few hundred that had been laundered and then started to make beasts.

Van Kleef substituted Makers Mark and Bulleit bourbons for the rye whiskey conventionally used in a Manhattan. Then he added four bitters that he said make magic with the cocktail, giving it "a nose and high-end complexity like a fine wine."

"The taste," he said, is very Oaklandish and strikes a chord with the diverse, ethnically mixed residents of Oakland, whether they are the Courvoisier cognac-sippers or Jameson whiskey-drinkers.
