Yesterday the Planned Parenthood NYC Action Fund brought together Jessica Valenti of Feministing, Lynn Harris of Broadsheet, and longtime reproductive rights activist and writer Gloria Feldt to discuss everything from feminist pop culture to whether "feminism" is a dirty word.

The evening seemed to focus on how we talk about feminism

issues of language and rhetoric are a really important part of being a feminist in the larger world. The conversation touched on blog comments — which all three agreed were like a more public version of 1970s consciousness-raising groups — before zeroing in on the word "feminist" itself. Valenti said she embraced the word, and that there was no point in picking another, less loaded term because "I think any word you use to talk about women's rights is going to become a dirty word." Feldt concurred: "the first thing people do to you when they want to diminish you is they diminish you with language."

Obese man dies after refusing zoo X-ray

A German man weighing 230 kilograms has died after refusing to go to the zoo for an X-ray because he was too heavy for machines designed for humans, The Daily Bild has reported.

"It sounded like they were trying to wind us up," Thomas Lessmann's widow Petra told the paper.

Complaining he was feeling ill and frequently losing consciousness, the 51-year-old went to a clinic in Eppendorf, near Hamburg in northern Germany, which referred him to the nearby Hagenbeck Zoo.

His pride wounded, he refused to go and died 13 days afterwards, the paper said.

The cause of death was unclear.

A spokeswoman for the clinic said that Mr Lessmann was entitled to the same treatment as anyone else but added, "The upper weight limit for machines in human medicine is around 200 kilograms."

The full 87 miles of the official Ridgeway National Trail can easily be divided into shorter segments, depending on time available. It can be cut more or less in half, by deciding to walk only the older, original western section, which passes all the great prehistoric sites. Day hikes, and half-days centered on the Uffington White Horse, or Wayland’s Smithy, or the Avebury Stone Circles, can easily be devised by studying the map. THE Ridgeway is the oldest continuously used road in Europe, dating back to the Stone Age. Situated in southern England, built by our Neolithic ancestors, it’s at least 5,000 years old, and may even have existed when England was still connected to continental Europe, and the Thames was a tributary of the Rhine.

APO Philatelic Society

The Amateur Philatelists Organization or APO (forerunner of the APO Philatelic Society) was organized on May 28, 1950 by the triumvirate of Messrs. Francisco Arcebal, Carlos Licup, and Mamerto Gallardo. The APO was founded on the paramount objective of bringing the hobby of stamp collecting into the consciousness of beginners and amateur philatelists by motivating them, educating them with proper guidance in the different aspects of philately, and rearing them to be responsible and competitive stamp collectors.

The first issue of the APO Newsletter came out in March, 1954. Carlos Reyes was the editor; Teresita del Fierro and Bernardo Sembrano, managing editors. On January, 1969, the club published its official organ, APOSTAMPS, with newly-elected President, Epifanio Paras, as editor.
