Iranian Now V.P. of Firm that Made the Wild West

Wells Fargo is one of the few surviving American businesses from the days of the Wild West when it ran stage coaches and provided banking services for cowboys. The stagecoaches and cowboys are gone, but the banking system remains and one of the vice presidents of the modern firm is now an Iranian-American woman.

Avid Modjtabai is also part of the Board of Directors of Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans (PAAIA)

When asked about her most important career influences, Modjtabai gave credit first to her parents. "My parents have been the greatest influence on my career. My father gave me the determination to demand the best from myself. From my mother, I learned compassion and tolerance. Wells Fargo chairman Dick Kovacevich and CEO John Stumpf took chances on me and gave me opportunities to grow professionally."

Making a mockery of jihad

Recent terror attacks in India and abroad have created an impression that jihad is central to Koranic teaching

jihad does not mean war in the Koran as there are other words for it like qital and harb. Jihad has been used in the Koran in its root meaning: to strive for betterment of society, to spread goodness

and contain evil

But supposing jihad means war, as some Muslims believe, even then it still isn't central to Koranic teachings. The word "jihad" occurs in the Koran 41 times though not a single verse uses it in

the sense of war.

The four most fundamental values in the Koran are justice

benevolence

compassion

and wisdom

One who fails to practice these values can hardly claim to be a true Muslim

It can be said that compassion is most central to Koranic teachings. The words "compassion" and "mercy" in their various forms occur in the Koran 335 times

Researchers Say Ancient Tibetan Practice May Improve Health & Happiness

Data from a new Emory University study suggests that individuals who engage in “compassion meditation” based on a thousand-year-old Tibetan Buddhist mind-training practice (called "lojong" in Tibetan), appears to effectively reduce the inflammatory and behavioral responses to stress that have been linked to depression and a number of physical illnesses. The practice revolves around fostering a sense of heightened compassion for others.

"Our findings suggest that meditation practices designed to foster compassion may impact physiological pathways that are modulated by stress and are relevant to disease," explains Charles L. Raison, MD, a lead author on the study.

The study focused on the effect of compassion meditation on inflammatory, neuroendocrine and behavioral responses to psychosocial stress, and evaluated the degree to which engagement in meditation practice influenced stress reactivity.

San Antonians Step Up To Help Burned-Out Man

Nearly a week after losing his home and all his possessions to a fire, 92-year-old Joe Cerda said he's amazed by the generosity of his community.

"I wish I could hold my heart and chop it up in pieces and give it to them, but I can't," Cerda said.

Those pieces would go to the volunteers who have donated time, money and effort into helping clear debris from his home on the city's northwest side.

Cerda's help started last week with neighbors in the Los Angeles Height subdivision donating a place to sleep and food for the burned-out man, but after Cerda's story was publicized, many others from the community went to help.

A barbecue fundraiser held this weekend raised nearly $1,000 for Cerda, and several local companies are also donating and volunteering. Friday afternoon, one company stepped up to replace Cerda's hearing aid, which is expected to be delivered Wednesday, and another company will be doing the demolition work on his home free of charge.

Also, contemplate the suffering of animals due to the loss of their natural habitat. Embrace all animals with your compassion. Wish for your compassion to ease their suffering.

The word judgmental has become one of the most common pejoratives used by westerners drawn to Buddhist practice, and that makes sense. But too many people make the mistake of thinking that not being judgmental means not making judgments.

This view is simply amoral, and stands in contradiction to the Buddha Dharma.

This view combines intellectual laziness with moral cowardice, and is the quintessence of what Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche called "idiot compassion" - a superficial egalitarianism that is not compassionate at all.

Buddhism, in fact, is based upon making judgments. The Buddha judged that people were causing needless suffering to themselves and others, and that this was a bad thing.

The great master Dogen said it best: "Enlightenment without morality is not yet enlightenment. Morality without enlightenment is not yet morality."

Silence is not neutral; it always supports the liar, the phoney, the abuser, the oppressor. It is the duty of a Zen monk to speak out, to challenge

Indian govt backs staff who killed boss

Oscar Fernandes had defended former employees of car parts maker Graziano Transmissioni who attacked and killed chief executive Lalit Kishore Chaudhary at the Italian firm's offices near New Delhi earlier this week.

India's labour minister apologised for expressing his support for sacked workers who beat their former boss to death.

Chaudhary, a father with one son, was hit on the head with either a stick or an iron rod and was declared dead on arrival at hospital, police said.

Fernandes had said the attack "should serve as a warning for management."

"Workers should be dealt with with compassion," he had told reporters. "The workers should not be pushed so hard."

But he retracted his comments on Wednesday after they were greeted with shock by many Indians.

Chaudhary, 47, died of head injuries after being attacked by more than a hundred workers who had been sacked a few months ago.

clipper's remarks: I have a different theory about McCain's angry debate performance. Although I don't deny that McCain failed to look Obama because he was angry, I believe that he didn't look at Obama as a way to control his anger from becoming outright rage. It's a device used by people with anger management problems. Look away so that the anger doesn't become overly personal or even violent--to make it as if the other person is not in the room. John McCain has to do these things because he is pathologically angry. He is a man who can't help himself in ways...someone who deserves our pity and compassion but not our votes.
