I called Orson Swindle, a fellow POW who is campaigning for McCain, to ask him about it.

“I recall John telling that story when we first got together in 1971, when were talking about every conceivable thing that had ever happened to us when we were in prison” Swindle told me a few minutes ago. “Most of us had been kept apart or in small groups. Then, in 1970, they moved us into the big cell. And when we all got to see each other and talk to each other directly, instead of tapping through walls, we had 24 hours a day, seven days a week to talk to each other, and we shared stories. I vaguely recall that story being told, among other stories.”

“I remember it from prison,” Swindle continued. “There were several stories similar to that in which guards — a very few, I might add — showed compassion to the prisoners. It was rare, and I never met one, but some of the guys did.”

No Beijing Olympics for Me

Anyone interested in seeing a video re this horror, please go to the internet
and type in "CHINESE FUR FARMS." This video shows the terrible treatment
involved in the skinning of dogs which I believe are called raccoon dogs. Other farms also skin alive cats as well. Their reasoning for skinning them alive defies common sense and certainly compassion. The numbers are estimated in the millions, but for those who are incredulous - how about hundreds of thousands? Does that make it less of a tragedy?

Stem cell research offers tremendous hope for those suffering from a variety of deadly diseases - hope for both cures and life-extending treatments. However, the compassion to relieve suffering and to cure deadly disease cannot erode moral and ethical principles.

What does it feel like to be old in America? At the Westminster Thurber Retirement Community here, Heather Ramirez summed it up in two words. “Painful,” she said. “Frustrating.”

Mrs. Ramirez is only 33, but on a recent morning she was taking part in a three-hour training program called Xtreme Aging, designed to simulate the diminished abilities associated with old age.

Along with 15 colleagues and a reporter, Mrs. Ramirez, a social worker at the facility, put on distorting glasses to blur her vision; stuffed cotton balls in her ears to reduce her hearing, and in her nose to dampen her sense of smell; and put on latex gloves with adhesive bands around the knuckles to impede her manual dexterity. Everyone put kernels of corn in their shoes to approximate the aches that come from losing fatty tissue.

They had become, in other words, virtual members of the 5.3 million Americans age 85 and older, the nation’s fastest-growing age group

Trump to buy McMahon's home, let him live there

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Donald Trump will soon be Ed McMahon's landlord.

Trump announced Thursday he would save the television personality's Beverly Hills mansion from foreclosure by buying it for an undisclosed amount and leasing it to McMahon.

The developer told the Los Angeles Times he doesn't know McMahon personally, but acted out of compassion because helping out "would be an honor."

McMahon, 85, who was Johnny Carson's sidekick on the "Tonight" show for three decades, has not worked for about 18 months because of a neck injury. He defaulted on $4.8 million in mortgage loans with Countrywide Financial Corp.

McMahon's spokesman, Howard Bragman, told The Associated Press that paperwork on the sale had not been completed but that McMahon was "very optimistic" the deal would go through.

South Carolina is a wonderful, beautiful and unique place to live. When I hear such discusting displays of negligence and uncaring it hurts my heart to detail it, when it is a blight on my Community and yet another shame for my State.
However, this story is already "out there" and it needs to be addressed. One of our SC Senators is grossly incapable of compassion, running his own household, spaying and neutering his pets, and really should not be in charge of other people's lives.
It's a shame. But do you really want men without compassion running your State and leading your Nation?

So, it's about a dumb dog? NO. It's about the "heart condition" and "neglect of responsibility" of one of our so called Leaders. Lead Men "by example," if not, go sell shoes or "DO" something else!

I am writing about a terrible situation that has come to my attention. Senator Kent Williams, District 30, coldly and irresponsibly dropped his very pregnant German Shepherd Dog at a local animal shelter. This is disgraceful on several levels: there is NO excuse for the Senator to have failed to spay his dog if he didn’t want the responsibility of raising puppies, and to dump his family dog off in a kill shelter to be heartlessly killed, or to have her puppies and have them be possibly killed too, is just heartbreaking.

if this is the kind of example they are showing, they need to be out of the office! This is not the kind of leadership this country needs!

Bush came into office promising "compassionate conservatism." And he's largely lived up to that promise, but he gets little or no credit. Aid to Africa is only one aspect of that compassion.

This week, an annual report to Congress notes a historic drop in America's number of chronically homeless people over a two-year period: a 30 percent decline between 2005 and 2007.

The study showed that a new policy enacted to promote "housing first" for chronically homeless people - most of whom are either mentally ill or substance abusers - actually works. Instead of allowing these individuals to shuttle between the streets, shelters and hospitals in a vicious cycle, the new policy called for intervention to get them into permanent housing.

HERE'S a question: Which US presi dent has done the most in history to help Africa? Bill Clinton, you say? Remember his much ballyhooed six-country tour in 1998, a trip in which he came close to apologizing for America's role in slavery?

No, Clinton may have been "the first black president," but aid to Africa during his tenure didn't come close to the mark hit by the continent's true champion - President Bush.

When George W. Bush took office in 2001, US aid to Africa was less than $1.5 billion a year. By 2006, the administration was spending more than $4 billion a year, and that aid will more than double under Bush's initiatives by 2010.

Most of the money has been directed at fighting diseases:

* HIV/AIDS, which has devastated a continent where one third of the population of some countries is affected.

* Tuberculosis, which remains a killer in Africa.

* Malaria, with more than 25 million Africans receiving prevention and treatment for this life-threatening disease.

To love our enemies. It was a powerful example for those of us who may not accept the divinity of Jesus that, at the very least, he was a powerful teacher. Rocky Twyman

prays that God will deliver us from a particular evil — gas prices hovering around the $4 mark.

He stood on the lot of a Mobil gas station at Jefferson Avenue and Delmar Boulevard Friday morning, clasping hands with seven other "prayer warriors." They pleaded with God to shower compassion on oil-rich Arab nations. And he is asking those in Saudi Arabia to follow the precepts of the Quran, which, he said, emphasizes reaching out to the poor and the downtrodden.

The Pray at the Pump Movement, as Twyman calls it, began in April when seniors who volunteer at his church's soup kitchen in Washington said they could no longer afford the gas prices to come in and offer their time. Twyman led a group from the kitchen across the street to a Shell station and the first Pray at the Pump was held.

Twyman claims such prayers have been successful in other cities, with prices dropping by as much as 30 cents in Toledo.

But at how many stations and for how long, Twyman isn't sure.
