At long last, Forbes Media acquires Clipmarks

Forbes Media announced Wednesday that it has officially acquired Clipmarks.com, a social news site that operates by enabling members to "clip" and share parts of Web sites rather than simply bookmarking them. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Clipmarks CEO Eric Goldstein will stay in his post.

clipper's remarks: VentureBeat just ran a story stating that Forbes has acquired Clipmarks. I wanted to quickly fill everyone in on what's going on.

First, this article is a bit premature. We have not been acquired by Forbes. However, for the past few months we have been meeting with people at all levels of Forbes and the excitement and support they have shown for what we're creating has been very meaningful to us. As many of you have probably seen already, a number of their writers are already clipping and our technology has been integrated on forbes.com.

For quite a while, we have been in talks with various parties about helping to financially support clipmarks. However, we hadn't yet found the right "partner" to help us complete this journey. A partner who fully understands our vision for making news and information more portable and interactive than ever before. Therefore, we just kept looking.

Sorting the useful information from the rubbish on the internet is an everyday challenge. Can social-networking sites, such as Clipmarks, help?

After looking at Clipmarks for a few minutes, here is part of what I first wrote: “Clipmarks is the first vital step towards the collaborative creation of a new level of meta-knowledge, enabling people to better understand the big picture. The next step is to use multifaceted taxonomies as the intellectual tools for collecting and organising the evidence on which metaknowledge is based.”

All individuals and groups can start contributing their intelligence and interests to the content and organisation of corporate clips collections (or the World Mind), right now, using simple tools and tagging devices like Clipmarks.

It will be a place where people who are sick and tired of the typical hostility, name calling and bitter divisiveness that is so common in most of our media can come to get away from that without losing the variety or substance of the content. It is a place for liberals and conservatives, democrats and republicans, and everyone in between or on either side of those all-to-often conveniently used labels.

Clipmarks helps make Firefox a favorite browser

clipper's remarks: As part of a piece about Apple launching Safari for PCs, the Telegraph's inhouse expert gave ONE example of an extension that makes Firefox the favorite browser for many. Guess which one? Clipmarks! Thanks Rick!

As for which browser is best, our inhouse expert, Rick Maybury, says: "There's no such thing as the perfect browser, nor is there ever likely to be. You don't have to use only one. Should you be so inclined, you could install all of them and run them at the same time."

Maybury, like a growing number of users, favours Firefox (getfirefox.com). This free software offers tabbed browsing (where you can open multiple web pages in the same browser window and flick between them), RSS feeds (which stream news and updates from your favourite sites), and a host of extensions that improve surfing, such as Clipmarks, which allows you to bookmark only the most interesting parts of a web page, rather than the whole thing.

Unfortunately, we have recently become increasingly concerned that the site has become overly antagonistic and inappropriately controlled by a disproportionately loud group of users. In all honesty, we no longer feel that the processes of our site are producing a unique, high quality blend of content. Instead, the magical blending of diverse topics on the Clipmarks home page has seemed to dissolve into a battleground for extremely hostile politically oriented users who are overwhelming the rest of the site. Because of this we are working on making some fundamental changes to the way the Clipmarks site works. We will do our best to make changes that improve the site and will continue to iterate until we are comfortable that it is just right.

Before 2006 ended, we desperately wanted to get a major upload done that elevated the Clipmarks experience to a much higher level. I’m excited and proud to say that I think we accomplished this. Rather than outlining what’s new, I just want to thank everyone who has shared this experience with us over the past year. I couldn’t dream of a more collaborative, meaningful interaction amongst people in search of a better online experience. You have been patient with us whenever we went in the wrong direction…persistent in your support and encouragement of what we’re trying to create…and you have constantly made us feel like we are making a positive, meaningful impact on the web. There is no greater reward than that!

I hope you all love some of the new aspects of our web site as much as we do! Much more on the way soon. Happy holidays and a wonderful, peaceful new year to everyone!!

Time runs so fast and somebody should definitely do something about it; like bribing the sun and convince it for slowing down the earth’s orbital voyage around it. When I was browsing the new clips at Clipmarks this morning, I suddenly noticed that date on my profile: “Joined: 11/10/2005″. Yes, today it’s been exactly 2 years since I joined Clipmarks, which means 730 great days, 104 wonderful weeks or 24 months full of clipping, sharing and fun.

As I often mention it here on this modest blog or elsewhere, Clipmarks has been a very special thing in my online life. Now while I am browsing more than 1700 clips I posted (and many more others, posted by fellow clippers) I can’t help thinking “What if there had not been a site like this, what if Clipmarks never existed?”

So thanks again Clipmarks, for these great 2 years; and thanks to all clippers who have been making this “infotainment” experience a very special one. I am proud of being a part of this great community.

Yes guys, time runs really fast. Three years ago today, I joined Clipmarks and my online experience has never been the same since the very first day I start clipping. No other web site, online service or community could give me so much valuable things that Clipmarks and the “clippiverse” generously offered. I enjoyed every single day very much and I learned so many things here, following your clips or reading your comments. More important than this, I have many good friends now all around the world - some of them have already become “old pals” for me.

So, thank you again EricG, Adam, EricSkiff, Derek and EricW: I owe all these to you. Hope to celebrate my 4th, 5th, 6th ….. clippiversaries here together!

And dear clippers, my friends, thank you for sharing your knowledge, feelings, recommendations and friendship.
