The UK government's chief science adviser has told BBC News that he supports the former chief drugs adviser's scientific view on cannabis.

Professor John Beddington, the UK's chief scientist, would not be drawn on whether the Home Secretary was wrong to sack Professor David Nutt.

David Nutt was chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.

He was fired after using a lecture to say cannabis was less harmful than alcohol and tobacco.

Asked whether he agreed with Professor Nutt's view that cannabis was less harmful than cigarettes and alcohol, Professor Beddington replied: "I think the scientific evidence is absolutely clear cut. I would agree with it."

Professor Beddington is the man ultimately responsible for scientific advice in government.

He said that he believed that the sacking had occurred because of a breakdown in trust between Professor Nutt and the Home Secretary Alan Johnson.

A row has broken out in Britain, after the chief drugs adviser to the government was sacked when he said alcohol and cigarettes were more dangerous than cannabis.

Other scientists on the drugs advisory council have resigned in protest, complaining the government is ignoring science in favour of popular myths.

When Professor David Nutt made his statements on marijuana, he thought he was simply telling the truth.

He said the drug was reclassified from class C to the more dangerous category B against scientific evidence, simply on the whim of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The reaction from the government was swift and unforgiving. Home Secretary Alan Johnson sacked him by email.

"You cannot have a chief adviser at the same time stepping into the political field and campaigning against government decisions,"

But Professor Nutt is not going quietly. He insists his views are supported by science and experts in the field, while the government is guided by populist misinformation.

We all know there are age restrictions on buying alcohol and cigarettes.

This weekend you can add eggs and shaving cream to that list in Quincy.

According to the Patriot Ledger, police are asking stores not to sell eggs and shaving cream to minors on Halloween.

It's an attempt to stop vandalism Saturday night.

Some teens told the paper it won't work because kids will just buy them Friday, instead of waiting until Saturday.

Another teen asked "What if I have to shave or cook breakfast?"

He'll probably have to eat cereal and wait until Sunday.

On September 23, 2008, Dorothy, a female chimpanzee in her late 40s, died of congestive heart failure. A maternal and beloved figure, Dorothy had spent eight years at Cameroon’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, which houses and rehabilitates chimps victimized by habitat loss and the illegal African bushmeat trade.

The management at Sanaga-Yong opted to let Dorothy's chimpanzee family witness her burial, so that perhaps they would understand, in their own capacity, that Dorothy would not return. Some chimps displayed aggression while others barked in frustration. But perhaps the most stunning reaction was a recurring, almost tangible silence. If one knows chimpanzees, then one knows that [they] are not [usually] silent creatures.

There is global climate change, oscillation of climate systems around the world caused by the addition of greenhouse gases to our atmosphere as the result of human activities. As a consequence of global climate change, we are likely to see higher highs in some places, lowers lows in others. That’s why the scientific consensus established in the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change refers to ‘change’ and not ‘warming.’ I’m happy to be a ‘changer,’ and not a ‘warmer,’ nor a denier who was bought and paid for by the energy companies who bankroll groups you cite like the Heartland Institute, which also happily took money from the tobacco industry to prove that cigarettes don’t make people sick. Other than that, you’re linking to a bunch of op-ed pages all reading from the same script as groups like Heartland, rather than primary sources.

Children can see right through you

We all have heard that American’s whine too much about their way of life. Other countries really do have it much worse than we do.

But try telling that to a little girl whose mother burns her with cigarettes when the child’s playful yells get too loud. Or the girl whose mother traded her daughters virginity for another hit on a crack pipe. Tell that to the boy whose father beats him with anything he can get his hands on just to get out the bitterness he has for his own life. Or the kid who keeps running away from abusive foster and group homes because he feels safer in the parks and streets.

This happens in a nation of so called liberals who claim to care about everyone but can’t see past their own prejudices. A republic where so called conservatives who claim to love God and family values turn the other way because they believe it’s none of their business.

If we want to help others we must first help our own children.

A friend who is also an oncology nurse told me a particularly harrowing story about a patient, a man in his 60s, who was admitted to her floor with a new cancer diagnosis.

Treatment would involve a month of hospitalization and surgery to insert a central line in his chest to administer the chemotherapy. The patient was reluctant to go through with it, but the night before the operation, his daughter talked him into it.

The next morning, however, he balked. He refused to go to the operating room and said he was refusing treatment. His wish, he said, was to go home, sit on his porch, drink beer and smoke cigarettes.

But the doctor did refuse to refer the patient to hospice. The medical team listed the patient as leaving A.M.A. — against medical advice — and said a hospice referral posed too great a liability risk in that case.

The influential lobby group Consumer Electronics Assn. is fighting what appears to be a losing battle to dissuade California regulators from passing the nation’s first ban on energy-hungry big-screen televisions.

On Tuesday, executives and consultants for the Arlington, Va., trade group asked members of the California Energy Commission to instead let consumers use their wallets to decide whether they want to buy the most energy-saving new models of liquid-crystal display and plasma high-definition TVs.

“Voluntary efforts are succeeding without regulations,” said Doug Johnson

But those pleas didn’t appear to elicit much support from commissioners at a public hearing on the proposed rules that would set maximum energy-consumption standards for televisions to be phased in over two years beginning in January 2011. A vote could come as early as Nov. 4.

A man who allowed a three-year-old girl to smoke cigarettes was today jailed for 18 months.

In mobile phone footage taken by a 14-year-old girl, Graeme Conroy, 31, is seen handing the lit cigarette to the child and encoura ging her to inhale.

Conroy was caught when a neighbour became aware of the video and told police, Newcastle crown court heard.

In the video, Conroy can be heard joking and guffawing with laughter. A 16-year-old witness told police what Conroy did at a house in Wardley, Gateshead, on 24 February this year. "He said 'watch this'. She [the girl] like had a tab. We thought it was funny at first and he said 'video it'.

"She had finished it and put it out in the ashtray. The girl asked for another one and he said 'you've had enough' and she started crying so he gave her another one."

"She was inhaling and everything. It looked like she had smoked before. She was inhaling it and she knew what to do.

"Graeme didn't tell her what to do. She just knew what to do."
