Mexico City, Aug 26, 2008 / 12:54 pm (CNA).- During his homily on Sunday, the Archbishop of Mexico City, Cardinal Norberto Rivera, said it was a contradiction to have a national accord against violence while at the same time legalizing abortion. Mexico’s Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on whether or not a law legalizing abortion in the capital is constitutional.

“Our Church not only applauds but will do everything possible to support the National Accord against Organized Violence,” the cardinal said. But “to me it is a contradiction to sign an accord against violence with great fanfare while at the same time we are threatened with the violence against the most innocent, those in the wombs of their mothers, being declared constitutional.”

2,500 Hold Vigil At New Planned Parenthood Clinic

About 2,500 people circled the new Planned Parenthood clinic Monday night as part of a vigil organized by the Archdiocese of Denver.

A niece of the late Martin Luther King Jr., Alveda King, and Denver's Roman Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput led the marchers in calling for an end to abortion and the closing of the clinic. Some of the marchers recited the rosary while others marched silently on sidewalks that had been previously chalked with anti-abortion messages

King said abortion shouldn't be a partisan issue, and she prayed that the waters of the "political sea" would be parted so opponents of abortion could reach the "promised land."

She praised Bishop Charles Blake, head of the predominantly black Church of God in Christ, for identifying himself as a "pro-life Democrat" at an interfaith gathering on the eve of the Democratic National Convention.

"Our feeling is, if every women chose life it wouldn't matter what the law said," Koenig said.

Italian priest organizes beauty contest for nuns

The "Miss Sister 2008" contest will start in September on a blog run by the Rev. Antonio Rungi and will give nuns from around the world a chance to showcase their work and their image.

"We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits," Rungi said by telephone from his town of Mondragone. "But being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn't hide it."

Conservatives insist that the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion, not freedom from religion, and argue against strict separation of church and state. Too often, though, conservatives seem to have a flawed understanding of what freedom from religion really entails and fail to realize that freedom from religion is crucial to religious liberty in general.

It is evident that a person misunderstands the concept of freedom from religion when they say that promotion of the idea is part of an effort to eliminate religion from the public square, to secularize America, or to deny religious believers a voice in politics. None of this follows from a belief that people have a right to be free from religion.

In Franklin County, Idaho, the Mormon population is 91.5 percent. In Utah County, Utah, it is 88.1 percent. If your job transferred you to one of these counties and you sent your child to a public school, would you object if the teacher began class by reading from the Book of Mormon each day? Well, obviously not if you are Mormon. If you are of any other religion or none at all, chances are good you would object.

Baptists became known as champions for religious freedom

In the past 25 years, Baptists have lost credibility in the public arena

“We have the power, we have the wealth, and what’s more, we are now the majority; let’s impose our faith on the masses. We know it’s good for them. Furthermore, it’s our Christian duty.”

Baptist numbers are in decline as are the numbers of other denominations

They cannot seem to see that in lording their faith over the masses and forcing their religion upon those whose hearts are neither touched nor convicted by their in-your-face efforts, they are losing the reputation that Baptists championed — the reputation that Baptists care about the rights of all people, not just their own.

As questions have been raised over how thoroughly Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign vetted Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for the V.P. slot, it seems the McCain campaign was unaware of a video -- available online -- in which Palin talks about God's role in U.S. military action overseas, according to a political operative familiar with the situation.

The video, first reported by the liberal blog HuffingtonPost.com, is from a June Palin speech to the graduating class of commission students at Palin's former church in Wasilla, Alaska. While describing her family, Palin told students about her oldest son, 19-year-old Track, who is set to be deployed to Iraq this month with the U.S. Army. She urged students to pray “that our leaders -- that our national leaders -- are sending [soldiers] out on a task that is from God.”

She added, “That's what we have to make sure that we are praying for: that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan.”

Father Emmanuel Asi, secretary of the Catholic Bible Commission of Pakistan and parish priest of a large parish in Lahore, has told the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) that Christians in Pakistan are living "in constant fear and peril".

He cited the example of a 13 year old Christian girl who only recently had been kidnapped and raped by a Muslim man. Such incidents were a regular occurrence, he said. In order to avoid punishment for this crime, the man involved would simply assert that the woman was now a Muslim. He would "marry� her, but then send her away again after a short time. No one could do anything to stop this, since the victims were put under such great pressure by their "husbands" and threatened with death, so that they themselves would confirm in court, in the presence of their parents, that they had converted to Islam. In this way a Muslim man could abduct and rape any woman with impunity, he said.

It takes a lot to surprise me when it comes to human nature, but last night I met a woman in her 60s at a coffee shop who warned the people at our table about a 'devil' that was going to be at Departure Bay today.

At first I thought she was joking but she said no, she was serious there was going to be a group of devil worshippers gathering there today. She said groups from all the churches were gathering to protest. I asked her if it was the Pagan Pride festival and when she said yes' I said, 'well, my daughter is Wicca and I'm proud of her."

She had nothing to say to that. I really thought that self-righteous people like her had disappeared in the era when witches were being burned.

It's religious fanatics like her who cause destruction in this world because of the fervour of the their beliefs.

I had one daughter become a Catholic and one daughter become Wicca and I'm proud of both of them for making choices that were right for them (I'm Anglican).

As the Huffington Post reported earlier Tuesday, Palin addressed a gathering at the Wasilla Assembly of God, asking them to pray for oil pipeline development and "God's will" in Iraq. Meanwhile, the Boston Herald and Newsweek have both identified Wasilla Bible Church as the Alaska Governor's most recent church. And it was at that Bible Church where a recent guest described a Palestinian attack on Israeli citizens as part of God's judgment coming to pass on Earth -- an analysis likely troubling both to Jews, as well as to mainstream foreign policy analysts.

Describing a trip by his son to Jerusalem, Jews for Jesus founder David Brickner described the a July Palestinian bulldozer attack against Israeli civilians as part of God's "judgment."

Oil really is the root of all evil

Take oil and petroleum out of the energy equation and replace it with a locally produced, locally controlled, ecological, economical, renewable resource and what happens?

95% of the world's structural problems melt away.

No more oil wars. No more money leaving our country by the hundreds of billions. No more ecological devastation related to fuel production. Greatly reduced carcinogens.

But oil is necessary for our lifestyle, right?

If it's not, how did we get hooked on oil in the first place?

History tells us the US went from whale oil to kerosene for lamps courtesy of the ingenuity of John Rockefeller and Standard Oil.

But think about something for a moment.

Prohibition was the total ban on alcohol manufacturing in the US from 1919 to 1933.

Are we to believe that these 1919-era men were led and controlled a group of 1919-era church ladies?

Does that make any sense?
