Appendix: Not so useless?

Duke University Medical Center researchers believe they have discovered why the appendix exists and what purpose it serves in modern humans.

They think it is used to 'reboot' the digestive system and produce the bacteria sometimes eliminated by disease. How is it that people have them removed and live normal lives afterward?

In modern times, it is relatively unimportant. In crowded areas people can easily replace lost bacteria from contact with others but in ancient times, when isolation was more common or when diseases such as cholera or amoebic dysentery struck and eliminated the stomach's good bacteria, the appendix was likely how the human body regenerated good bacteria.

In that sense, modern hygiene makes it more likely that the under-utilized appendix will need to be removed.

La Consolacion College Manila

March 1, 1883 marked the inauguration of the ministerial services of the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolacion (ASOLC) in the Philippines. It was dedicated to care for forty orphans left by the 1882 cholera epidemic and was spearheaded by Sor Rita Barcelo y Pages, the Foundress and Sor Joaquina Barcelo, the co-Foundress. They then took care of the education of twelve colegialas in Mandaluyong, Rizal.

Despite the perils of the 1896 Philippine Revolution and the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Augustinian Sisters pursued their mission as Augustinian religious and established an orphanage known as Asilo de Mandaloya and a boarding school for girls called Asilo-Colegio de Mandaloya (1889).

Kennon Road

The famous Benguet Road, better known far and wide as Kennon Road, is one of the best mountain roads in the world. Named after Major Lyman M. Kennon, the ultimate builder of the road, it stands as a tribute to Major Kennon's engineering skill and knowledge and excellent understanding of human nature.

The construction of the historic road was difficult and dangerous. Diseases and even cholera attacked the workers. Some of the nationalities who contributed to the labor force in the construction of the highway were Filipinos, Spaniards, Indians, Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiians, Portuguese, Mexicans, Italians, French, English, Canadians. Germans, Americans, etc.

Millions at Risk of Starvation Across East Africa

One person in 10 lives off emergency rations in Kenya, where close to 4 million people are close to starvation. As a whole, as many as 23 million people are on the brink of starvation across East Africa, the worst in at least a decade. Rains arrived last week, but it was too late for most, and now there are worries of flooding, cholera, and malaria. Cattle are dying in droves, and armed struggles over water and food are increasing. Kenya's famous wildlife reserves are littered with carcasses. Although drought is nothing new in that part of the world, it is now occurring much more frequently, a trend that many are attributing to climate change.

Seoul (AsiaNews) – Pyongyang is testing its “biological and chemical weapons” on “humans, specifically mentally or physically handicapped children,” a former officer in the North Korean military who defected to South Korea is quoted as saying on the al-Jazeera website. In the interview the defector said that Pyongyang has estimated stockpile of more than 5,000 tonnes of biochemical weaponry, including mustard gas, nerve agents such as sarin, anthrax and cholera.

Im Chun-yong is a former captain in the North Korean military who fled in 1999 with a number of soldiers. He swam across the half frozen Tumen River into China. During their escape he and his men battled their way out, chased by dozens of members of other commando units. “I myself killed three men,” he told al-Jazeera.

He now lives in South Korea and devotes his time to gathering intelligence about the North's military capabilities

Definition

Discovery

ARF was originally identified as a cofactor for cholera toxin A catalyzed ADP-ribosylation of the stimulatory GTP-binding component of adenylate cyclase3.

Classification

The mammalian ARFs can be grouped into three classes on the basis of their size and sequence identity. ARF1, ARF2 and ARF3 are grouped under class I, ARF4 and ARF5 under class II and ARF6 under class III4.

It took more than four years of negotiations and construction, but this month an Austin Water Utility inspector gave final clearance to a glorified outhouse that is on the vanguard of down-and-dirty environmentalism.

Known as a composting toilet, the East Austin commode relies on the alchemy wrought by bacteria to transform human waste into a rich trove of soil. Specialists in so-called humanure have hailed the approval of the toilet as a watershed moment for common-sense environmentalism.

Mismanaged sewage and bad sanitation have been blamed for outbreaks of a variety of diseases, among them cholera. But heat created by bacteria in the vault destroys pathogens and coliforms, Bailey says, making the soil "totally benign, environmentally speaking."

Somalia crisis 'Africa's worst'

The "very dire" humanitarian crisis in Somalia is the worst in Africa for many years, says Oxfam's co-ordinator for the failed Horn of Africa state.

"There are hundreds of children all over the area with tubes on their faces and [saline] drips on their hands. Some of them are actually unconscious and suffering from all sorts of diseases, mainly acute diarrhoea and cholera."

"I have seen the situation in Darfur, northern Uganda, some parts of Congo, but what is actually happening now in Somalia is indeed the worst kind of humanitarian situation in Africa in many years," he added.

It is estimated at least one million people have been internally displaced by almost perpetual civil conflict in the country since the collapse of its central government in 1991.

Many thousands of people, mainly women and children, have fled to Afgooye, just south of the city where most are sheltering under trees with little to eat or drink, he says.

21-jährig brach Horstmann am 2. Mai 1895 in Wuppertal auf. Seine Eltern waren alles andere als begeistert. Horstmanns Vorbild, ein Deutsch-Amerikaner, war auf seiner Tour in Kurdistan ermordet worden.

"Horstmann lebte allerdings auch nicht ganz ungefährlich", erzählt Lessing. In der Wüste New Mexikos musste er einen Wegelagerer aus Notwehr erschießen. Durch Cholera und Typhus geschwächt, legte er die Strecke von Indien nach Italien mit dem Schiff zurück. In Österreich musste er sich der Musterung fürs Militär unterziehen, wurde jedoch als wehruntauglich abgewiesen.

Die Wette, die der gelernte Schlosser abgeschlossen hatte, verlor er, berichtete Lessing. Holzmann wollte ohne einen Pfennig in der Tasche losfahren und nach zwei Jahren mit 5000 Mark wiederkommen. Er brauchte ein paar Monate länger. Dafür hatte er während seiner Tour sogar eine Audienz bei dem belgischen König Leopold II. bekommen.
