Obama dishes out tough talk on education

"Our kids and our country can't afford four more years of neglect and indifference. At this defining moment in our history, America faces few more urgent challenges than preparing our children to compete in a global economy," Obama said at a campaign event in Riverside, Ohio.

Obama said he wants to see more investments in early childhood education, which he said would better train students in reading and math, and increase the likelihood that students would pursue higher education.

Obama said he supports the original goals of the Bush administration's No Child Left Behind program, but he said teachers must have better resources in order to live up to the program's promise to educate every child.

When the hurdle of preschool is overcome, parents may feel confident that their youngster will be well equipped to also handle kindergarten. Unfortunately, they fail to realize that the main reason why the child was able to do well in preschool is the fact that they, as parent advocates, took the initiative to work with the teachers and playground supervisors to create an environment for the child in which she or he could thrive.

A Hawaii state judge waived Family Court jurisdiction today over a New Zealand teenager accused of strangling his neighbour last year, leaving the youth liable to jail for life without parole if convicted.

The judge's decision allowed Honolulu police and prosecutors to charge Vernon Bartley, 16, as an adult, and homicide detectives immediately arrested Bartley and took him to a Honolulu Police Department cellblock, the Honolulu Star Bulletin reported.

If Vernon Bartley had not been waived to adult court, he might have been released on his 19th birthday.

The 16 year old accused of raping and killing an Ewa Beach woman is in police cellblock charged with first degree murder.

Bartley, who moved to Hawaii from New Zealand in 2005, was 15 when Ms Ertell's body was found.

The teenager has been arrested more than 10 times since moving to Hawaii, for offences such as burglary, trespassing, and theft.

China is struggling to cope with a wave of child abductions which sees more than 200 babies and toddlers being stolen every day, according to some estimates.

It is a lucrative business in which an abducted girl child can fetch $1,200 and a boy anything up to $5,000, more than the average annual salary in urban China.

"It's too easy for the gangs. For a little money they can buy a birth certificate and then permanent residency for a child thousands of kilometres away," Sun said.

"The government has created this environment."

One-child policy

"The one-child policy has skewed preference for boys and this is pretty much an undercurrent of this current problem, this current tragedy," Amalee McCoy, a child protection consultant with the UN's chidren's fund Unicef, said.

"Where they end up, it is purely speculation a lot of the times, but a lot the anecdotal evidence seems to show that they go to families who are really wanting to have a boy child.

Detroit, MI - Two-year-old Tangena Hussain of Hamtramck, Michigan, was last seen at 8:45 on Thursday evening at the Marathon Gas Station in Detroit. Or was she? Her mother’s boyfriend (but not Tangena’s father) Jamrul Hussain, 27, says that Tangena was in the back seat of his car when he stopped at the gas station to buy candy and juice for the child. They were on their way to pick up Tangena’s mother, Nilufa Begum, from work at Northland Mall.

When Jamrul Hussain got back to his car, he said, Tangena was gone. But rather than call police or alert the store personnel, Hussain went to pick up Begum as scheduled, telling her that he would “take her to her daughter”. Instead, he took Begum back to the place where he said he lost her baby girl. Sound familiar, anyone?
