Since educators who beat children have immunity under law from assault proceedings, parents who try to pursue justice for injured children encounter resistance from police, district attorneys, and courts

Monday, Sep 1 (Psych Central) -- A new study discovers chewing gum helped relieve anxiety, improve alertness and reduce stress among individuals in a laboratory setting.

The study examined whether chewing gum is capable of reducing induced anxiety and/or acute psychological stress while participants performed a battery of ‘multi-tasking’ activities.

The use of chewing gum was associated with higher alertness, reduced anxiety and stress, and improvement in overall performance on multi-tasking activities.

Andrew Scholey, Ph.D., professor of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia led the research study of 40 gum chewers.

The participants who averaged 22 years old, were tested with the Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation (DISS), a multi-tasking platform which reliably induces stress and also includes performance measures, while chewing and not chewing gum.

The punishment often involves hitting a child on the buttocks with a long wooden board, or paddle.

clipper's remarks: Just as slavery, Jim Crow laws and the subjugation of women in the USA are looked upon as primitive and embarrassing practices, I believe that corporal punishment in schools will someday be looked upon as a strange and inexplicably cruel practice.

It will also be looked upon as another vehicle of racism as this study indicates.

What will the conservative critics say in response? That African American children misbehave more in schools and, therefore, deserve the punishment? But isn't that what they say about higher incarceration rates for African Americans?

So what is the picture that emerges from those who rationalize these institutional racist practices? In my view, it tells us that (their denials notwithstanding) conservatives believe that from childhood to adulthood African Americans are naturally more disposed to violate cultural norms, to act out in an anti-social manner. It's a racist orientation masquerading as a pro law and order stance.

WAYNE — Walking into the gym on prom night with a girl on his arm draped in a chewing-gum-wrapper dress was definitely different.

Max Pistner, a Maranacook Community High School senior, said he thought it was "very cool" that his girlfriend, Vanessa Randall, made her prom dress out of 3,000 gum wrappers.

Randall, a 17-year-old senior from Wayne, started collecting Wrigley gum wrappers three years ago to make the dress. Friends, relatives and co-workers saved wrappers for her.

Pistner, who lives in Manchester, said he was just glad she got the dress done in time. She started sewing it together only a week before their recent prom.

Randall said she reinforced the dress with duct tape inside along the edges and used elastic braids around the straps and collar and in between some of the chains down the back so she could easily slip into the dress.

She came up with the design after drawing sketches all year.

Nonstick Chewing Gum

A U.K.-based company is set to launch a new kind of chewing gum that's easy to wash off any surface.

Most everyone has had the displeasure of stepping on chewing gum in a parking lot. Cleaning up the sticky mess might become easier, thanks to a new gum created by U.K.-based Revolymer. The gum easily comes off roads, shoes, and hair, and it barely sticks at all to some surfaces.

The company has conducted extensive trials on the ease of cleaning up the gum and has done independent taste tests. Revolymer's CEO, Roger Pettman, says that the company is now looking to get a U.S. Food and Drug Administration safety affirmation. If all goes as planned, Revolymer will launch the gum in three different flavors--mint, fruit, and lemon--next year.

The gum also did well in blind taste tests, Pettman says, with testers saying that it tasted just as good as leading brands. The texture, though, is slightly softer, he says, because the hydrophilic polymer interacts with saliva.
