Mata Amritanandamayi, an Indian woman known as Amma, is as canon-worthy as anyone we've ever heard of. For over 30 years, Amma has been traveling the globe, giving hugs to everyone she meets, asking nothing in return. Though she considers herself spiritual, she does not advocate any particular religion – her message is love, pure and simple.

So why does she do it? As Amma told BBC News, "Love is a very special, very uplifting vibration. That's what I'm trying to give people. It's like visiting a perfume factory. Consciously or unconsciously you will carry that fragrance around with you."

In each city she visits, Amma doles out hugs all day long, often until as late as two or three in the morning, until everyone's gotten a turn.

she is the founder of a charity called Mata Amritanandamayi Math. Many of her followers contribute money to the organization in appreciation of Amma's hugs.

Canon partnered with the American Park Network to offset their carbon with the purchase of trees. The APN then donates trees to local parks and works with community groups to plant them.
It would be a cool deal, but it's not much coming from canon. Not while they continue to produce highly wasteful print cartridges, and as far as I can see still haven't come out with a refillable cartridge. Canon is so so NOT GREEN!

The Colorful Art of Sand Mandalas

The Sand Mandala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition which symbolizes the transitory nature of things. As part of Buddhist canon, all things material are seen as transitory. A sand mandala is an example of this, being that once it has been built and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished, it is systematically destroyed.

Historically, the mandala was not created with natural, dyed sand, but granules of crushed colored stone. In modern times, plain white stones are ground down and dyed with opaque inks to achieve the same effect. Before laying down the sand, the monks assigned to the project will draw the geometric measurements associated with the mandala.

The sand granules are then applied using small tubes, funnels, and scrapers, until the desired pattern over-top is achieved.

Sand mandalas traditionally take several weeks to build

a team of monks will work together on the project, creating one section of the diagram at a time

The successor to Canon's EOS 5D digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera is finally out, it's Canon EOS 5D Mark II. A 21 megapixel 'full-frame' camera, the Mark II can record high-def video as well.

A full-frame camera is capable of delivering the full range of a SLR lens, such that a 24-to-105 mm lens actually delivers a 24 mm wide-angle view. The ability is useful to photographers who want to shoot scenes like landscapes.

The video option gives a 1920x1080 resolution at 30 frames per second for up to 12 minutes of continuous recording. Output is MPEG-4 with CD-grade audio and it records sound in stereo. Since the SLR flips up to record video, users aren't able to lock the focus, but live view has three different focus modes: quick, contrast and detection.
