The Internet is as cyclical as it is expansive. Boom, burst, bust, repeat. And yet some Web sites seem to operate outside the fray, delivering a consistent user experience and gradually evolving instead of flaring up or flaming out. Here at PC Magazine, we call these Web sites the classics both because they tend to be established destinations and because they set the standards for the rest of the Web.

Here is our canon of the top 101 classics for 2006, humbly submitted for you perusal. You've probably heard of many or even most of them, but it's our hope that all of our readers will find something new or rediscover a forgotten favorite on the list.

Let's not mince words: literary lists are basically an obscenity. Literature is the realm of the ineffable and the unquantifiable; lists are the realm of menus and laundry and rotisserie baseball. There's something unseemly and promiscuous about all those letters and numbers jumbled together. Take it from me, a critic who has committed this particular sin many times over.

But what if—just for argument's sake—you got insanely rigorous about it. You went to all the big-name authors in the world—Franzen, Mailer, Wallace, Wolfe, Chabon, Lethem, King, 125 of them— and got each one to cough up a top-10 list of the greatest books of all time. We're talking ultimate-fighting-style here: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, modern, ancient, everything's fair game except eye-gouging and fish-hooking. Then you printed and collated all the lists, crunched the numbers together, and used them to create a definitive all-time Top Top 10 list.

Yes, it would probably still be an obscenity. But it would be a pretty interesting obscenity. And that's what we have in J. Peder Zane's The Top 10 (Norton; 352 pages).

There are several lifetimes' worth of promising literary leads here—544 books in all. An 85-page appendix providing enlightened summaries of all the works mentioned is worth the price of admission all on its own. But to get you started, here, in all its glory, is the all-time, ultimate Top Top 10 list, derived from the top 10 lists of 125 of the world's most celebrated writers combined. Read it and— well, just read it.

Stacked from 15 exposures of 1/5 second at ISO 100 This image is a mosaic of 15 separate and slightly overlapping 8.2 megapixel images from my Canon EOS-20D (unmodified), taken in Raw mode and converted and stitched together in Photoshop CS2. The exposures were each 1/5 second at ISO 100.

Brain music Research from the University of Toronto has suggested that a CD of your brain waves converted into music can help you to sleep. Researchers recorded people's brain waves as they fell asleep, and then converted them into sound. The research subjects listened to the recordings each night for 30 days and fell asleep three times faster than people listening to other people's brain waves.

Twenty-five years ago, the Ridley Scott film Blade Runner became an instant science fiction classic. Set in a sodden, squalid Los Angeles of 2019, the neo-noir masterpiece influenced a generation of filmmakers and video-game designers. Long before I teamed up with Jamie Hyneman to form the MythBusters, I was a special-effects modelmaker, and Scott's cyberpunk gem almost instantly became the most important film in the canon of movies I love.

New Green Comet: "Lovejoy"

NEW COMET LOVEJOY: On March 15th, Terry Lovejoy of Thornlands, Australia, discovered a new comet (C/2007 E2) in the southern constellation Indus. Remarkably, to make the find he used not a telescope but just an off-the-shelf digital camera--a Canon 350D. At Lovejoy's request, John Drummund of Gisborne, New Zealand, confirmed the comet with this photo taken through a 0.41-m reflector:

The new comet is green and shines like a 9th magnitude star, too dim for the unaided eye but an easy target for large backyard telescopes in the southern hemisphere: ephemeris.

After five days of tracking, Comet Lovejoy's trajectory is known. The orbit is cockeyed, almost perpendicular to the rest of the solar system. At the moment the comet is swooping up from below, moving from southern to northern skies. At closest approach to Earth (0.44 AU) in late April, Comet Lovejoy is expected to brighten to 7th magnitude, still not a naked-eye comet but easy to see through small telescopes.

Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II in Russia & Kazakhstan

I've just reached home in Malaysia, after driving 17,000 km over 65 days in a 4x4 Range Rover, starting from London and passing through Holland, Germany, Poland, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Laos and Thailand.

I brought along a Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II with a 16-35, a 24-70, a 70-200 and a 15mm Fisheye

here's a view of the Kremlin that you will see across the Moskova River if you enter Moscow by driving in from the East as I did

the "Lollypop" Cathedral, the signature image of Moscow, otherwise known as the Cathedral of the Intercession or Cathedral of St Basil the Blessed.

this is the Cathedral of the Annunciation

there were many mosques too, especially in Kazakhstan

typical Russian house in the countryside near Vladimir

the magnificent Assumption Cathedral, one of about a dozen in Vladimir

the Tsar's Bell - possibly the biggest bell in the world

Lake Balkhash in Eastern Kazakhstan at sunset

eastern half is salty

western half has fresh water

RAW vs JPEG

Okay, it’s extreme time. I simultaneously shot a RAW (Canon CR2) file (left) and a large JPEG (right) of the same scene with a Canon 20D. These were shot with correct exposure but under tungsten light with the camera set to daylight color balance.

Here’s the RAW file, straight from the camera: ugly.

The JPEG file looks much the same straight out of the camera.

I put this RAW image into Photoshop CS2 (ACR), clicked the eyedropper on the gray square in the middle of the QPCard and voilá, it looks pretty darn good.

I opened the JPEG in CS2, opened Curves and clicked the gray square in the QPCard with the eye dropper to neutralize white balance. Ugh.

RAW at -2 stops.

JPEG at -2 stops. They look much the same

Okay, in CS2 (ACR) I did a really quick correction to the file and processed it out.

In CS2 I did a quick curve correction to the JPEG and got the highlights and midtones looking acceptable. But where’s the shadow detail?

With emotions ranging from pure adrenaline, blinding speed and motion blur to more subtle interpretations of this round's theme, the photographers have certainly put some serious effort into this.
