For over 30 years, Amma has been traveling the globe, giving hugs to everyone she meets, asking nothing in return. Though she considers herself spiritual, she does not advocate any particular religion – her message is love, pure and simple.

So why does she do it? As Amma told BBC News, "Love is a very special, very uplifting vibration. That's what I'm trying to give people. It's like visiting a perfume factory. Consciously or unconsciously you will carry that fragrance around with you."

In each city she visits, Amma doles out hugs all day long, often until as late as two or three in the morning, until everyone's gotten a turn.

she is the founder of a charity called Mata Amritanandamayi Math. Many of her followers contribute money to the organization in appreciation of Amma's hugs.

By Kathryn Hawkins

<clipSource>http://www.gimundo.com/Articles/Daily/736/7/21/2008/Amma:_The_Original_Free_Hugs_Lady</clipSource>

Macro Photos

clipped by: Kelika

Clip Source: www.wired.com

The macro photo contest was our fiercest competition yet, with almost every entry making our eyes boggle. A lower resolution camera can actually be a better product in every respect.

Of course, the camera companies just can't sell lower res cameras any more [...] because every manufacturer knows it's hard to sell a five or six megapixel camera when your competitor's shiny new 8MP model's on the shelf for not much more money. Consumers don't know much about lens specs or autofocus speed, but they can do basic megapixel arithmetic real good."

Clip Source: www.dansdata.com

people assume that a camera with more megapixels must take better pictures

Clearly not, to judge by “The Return of Ulysses,” Edith Hall’s enlightening and entertaining cultural history. Virgil, Monteverdi, James Joyce, Nikos Kazantzakis, Ralph Ellison and Derek Walcott are just a few of the artists to have transformed this spellbinding and mysterious epic into powerful works of their own. But while Hall doesn’t scant such noble descendants, nor Homer’s determinant role in ancient Greek and Roman culture, she is at least as enthusiastic at tracking Odysseus-Ulysses, the Man of Many Ways, down many a less-traveled path: the “Odyssey” is, after all, she says, “an ancestral text” for “historians, philosophers, psychologists, anthropologists, occult magicians, novelists, science-fiction writers, biographers, autobiographers, movie directors and composers of opera.” (And don’t forget magic realists.)

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/24/books/review/Coates-t.html?8bu&emc=bua2</clipSource>

Saakashvili: US military moving in; US: Not!

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: A loose cannon?

Clip Source: talkingpointsmemo.com

Oh Boy

Wouldn't want to think we've got ourselves tied up with a loose canon in the President of Georgia.

President Saakashvili today told Georgians that the US military was moving in to take over control of the country's air and seaports -- which would be a pretty big deal since much of the country still appears to be an active war zone.

And about five minutes later the Pentagon said he didn't know what he was talking about.

"We are not looking to, nor do we need to, take control of any air or seaports to conduct this mission," said Geoff Morrell, Pentagon press secretary. There is no link.” [...]

The author claims that such an operation, part of “false pretenses” for war, would apparently constitute illegal White House use of the CIA to influence a domestic audience, an arguably impeachable offense.

Clip Source: rawstory.com

A blockbuster new book from investigative journalist Ron Suskind adds another revelation to the growing canon demonstrating the lengths to which President Bush and members of his administration lied, misled and deceived the American people to pursue its invasion of Iraq.

Bush allegedly ordered the CIA to forge a handwritten letter from the head of Iraq's intelligence service to Saddam Hussein that purported to link the Iraqi dictator to the ringleader of the hijackers who toppled the Twin Towers on 9/11, according to news accounts of Suskind's new book, The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism.
