When you see the Wanamaker organ soar heavenward, you want to look around for the rest of the cathedral. When its sound makes pillars tremble, you know it speaks for the powers above. But where stained glass windows should be – there is ladies apparel. In the would-be pews, people are trying on boots. And that scent wafting through the air is not votive candles, it’s Chanel No. 5.

Wait. This is no church. This is … Macy’s?

Here, occupying prime retail space, there are nearly 30,000 organ pipes in chambers towering up through seven floors, making the Wanamaker the largest operating pipe organ in the world. For precious square footage to be given over thus is rare. Even modest organs tend to be located not in stores but in churches, private homes, or municipal buildings; built by the Los Angeles Art Organ Company, the Wanamaker is one of only two known department-store organs in the world.

here’s what you’ll need:
-cylindrical glasses or vases
-colored cardstock
-colored tissue paper
-ruler
-pencil
-scissors
-double-sided tape
-tea light or votive candle

1. measure the height and circumference of your glass and cut a piece of tissue paper that is the same height and 1/4″ wider than your measurement.
2. put a strip of double-sided tape down the length of your glass and wrap the tissue paper around, securing both ends onto the tape.

3. measure and cut a piece of colored card stock that is 1″ taller and 1/2″ wider than your glass measurement.
4. fold the cardstock in half lengthwise and starting at the fold line, make a series of cuts that are approximately 1/2″ to 1″ apart, making sure to stop about 1″ from the edge.

Mother Nature demands Californians pass Prop. 7

There is no longer a debate in California over whether we need to shift to renewable energy sources. Nor can anyone successfully say that Proposition 7's target of 50 percent renewable by 2025 is too ambitious. Al Gore says we need to do 100 percent by 2018.

I studied the text of Prop. 7 without any preconceived opinions. My considered judgment is that it clearly meshes with existing California law to achieve two basic and necessary goals.

Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go away.

Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

Ants, ants, ants everywhere. They are said to never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march.

Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning.

Australian and US scientists have found that a 'secondary' method of measuring the distance to nearby galaxies is more robust than previously thought.

Astrophysicists Professor Jeremy Mould from the University of Melbourne and Dr Shoko Sakai from the University of California, Los Angeles, tested the reliability of using stars from the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) to calculate distance. They found these stars to be just as good, if not better than Cepheids.

Their research has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal.

Astronomers measure distance in space using various methods depending on how far away the stars are.

For nearby distances, Cepheid variables - bright stars that expand and contract by 10% - have long been the primary 'standard candles' used.

"The question has been whether the relationship is more complicated than we think. Things like the composition of the star may make a difference," says Mould.

Britain is “quite simply running out of power” and blackouts are almost inevitable within the next few years.

Only last Thursday, National Grid issued an urgent call for power after a series of power station breakdowns. Suppliers were asked to bring all their available generating capacity online, including costly oil-fired stations.

The “retirement” of a string of nuclear and coal-fired power stations will see 37 per cent of the UK’s generation disappear by 2015, partly because of EU environmental directives.

Blackouts could force the Government to impose electricity rationing, last seen in the Seventies. The REF report says the Government “should prepare itself to intervene with social policy to prevent hardship and maintain order”.

“There’s a very real chance that power, will not even be there when you need it. That’s when you start worrying about social disorder.”
