Party sparks alien invasion fears

Police have been flooded with reports of UFO sightings - after party goers attached candles to balloons and sent them floating into the sky.

The guests in Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, released the balloons along with wishes that they hoped would come true.

But residents in the area were shocked by the sight of the illuminated globes in the sky, mistaking them for an alien invasion, reports Sky News.

Central Scotland Police said they received more than a dozen calls in half an hour from locals who thought the balloons were interstellar craft.

A spokesman said: "We've had call, after call, after call, saying it's UFOs.

"It turns out that there's a party going on and they are letting off balloons with candles on. They make a wish and then release them into the sky."

My friend Becky made me an Arduino birthday cake this year! There was a fight over the AVR chip (dark chocolate) which involved memory loss and a cake knife. Candles became wire sticking out of the pins. Seriously awesome. Next task: to make LED candles that you have to short out instead of blow out.

A woman accidentally stabbed herself in the foot with a 3-foot-long sword while performing a Wiccan good luck ritual at a central Indiana cemetery.

Katherine Gunther, 36, of Lebanon, pierced her left foot with the sword while performing the rite at Oak Hill Cemetery, police said.

Gunther said she was performing the ceremony to give thanks for a recent run of good luck. The ceremony involves the use of candles, incense and driving swords into the ground during the full moon.

Gunther said was aiming to put the sword in the ground, but hit her foot instead.

"It wasn't the first time I performed the ritual, but it was the first time I put a sword through my foot," she said.

No charges were filed, police said. The Wiccans were warned that being in the cemetery in the city about 20 miles northwest of Indianapolis after posted visiting hours constitutes trespassing.

The Northern Star, whose vibrations were thought to be dying away, appears to have come to life again.

An international team of astronomers has observed that vibrations in the Pole star, which had been fading away to almost nothing over the last hundred years, have recovered and are now increasing. And the astronomers don't know why.

The astronomers were watching Polaris in the expectation that they would catch the star switching off its vibrations completely when they made the surprising observation of its revival.

Although Shakespeare's Julius Caesar declared, "I am as constant as the Northern star, Of whose true-fix'd and resting quality There is no fellow in the firmament"

Polaris is a 'Cepheid' variable star, getting brighter and fainter every four days. Cepheids do play a vital part as 'standard candles' in determining the size of the Universe, but the details of their variations are not well understood.

LORENZAGO DI CADORE, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI has reasserted the universal primacy of the Roman Catholic Church, approving a document released Tuesday that says Orthodox churches were defective and that other Christian denominations were not true churches.

Benedict approved a document from his old offices at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith that restates church teaching on relations with other Christians. It was the second time in a week the pope has corrected what he says are erroneous interpretations of the Second Vatican Council, the 1962-65 meetings that modernized the church.

On Saturday, Benedict revisited another key aspect of Vatican II by reviving the old Latin Mass. Traditional Catholics cheered the move, but more liberal ones called it a step back from Vatican II.

Medicinal Uses

Native Americans used black cohosh as a treatment for various female conditions, rheumatism as well as other ailments (Moerman 1988). European settlers learned the medicinal uses from Native American and brought it back to Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries. Early settlers used it to treat small pox (Predny et al. 2006; Wood 2000). Black cohosh root was listed in the U.S. Pharmacopeia as an official drug from 1820-1926 (Foster 2000) and has been used as a standardized phytomedicine in Europe since the 50's. Today, black cohosh root is used primarily to treat symptoms of menopause.

Black cohosh has anti-inflammatory, hypotensive and anti-spasmodic effects. It increases circulation and has been employed to bring on delayed menses (Tierra 1988). Use of black cohosh is not recommended during pregnancy.

Our civilization is decadent and our language -- so the argument runs -- must inevitably share in the general collapse. It follows that any struggle against the abuse of language is a sentimental archaism, like preferring candles to electric light or hansom cabs to aeroplanes.
