McCain cranks out some false and misleading attacks on Obama's connection to a 1960s radical.

In a TV ad, McCain says Obama "lied" about his association with William Ayers, a former bomb-setting, anti-war radical from the 1960s and '70s. We find McCain's claim to be groundless. New details have recently come to light, but nothing Obama said previously has been shown to be false.

Our political discourse has become too self righteous and hypocritical. What is good for the goose is not for the gander. We are judgemental. We don’t think.

I don’t know who in this campaign has been more divisive or manipulative and I don’t care. It divides us. It makes us less. It demeans our writing and our speech. It demeans our campaigns. It demeans us as humans. Today we can not only revel in the enormous freedoms and access we have to put in our two cents, we need to step back, look at our responsibilities to those around us and try act in a manner that gives credit to the intelligent, decent, tolerant and understanding people that we aspire to be. We have great opportunities for unity, understanding, compromise and progress. There are those who will stand in the way of that progress and that opportunity. You can not combat them if you emulate their behavior.

A Buckley endorses Obama

(CNN) — No, hell has not frozen over, but a Buckley is backing a Democrat for president.

Buckley, who praised McCain in a New York Times Op-Ed earlier this year and defended the Arizona senator's conservative credentials against wary talk-radio hosts, said McCain is no longer the “real” and “unconventional” man he once admired.

"This campaign has changed John McCain," Buckley wrote. "It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget 'by the end of my first term.' Who, really, believes that?

"Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis," Buckley added. "His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?"

At that, Danzig played ball. "I think John McCain is well-known for 'losing it' in a variety of circumstances," he said -- something which has potential policy implications.

Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin (Ill.) and Barbara Boxer (Calif.), in separate interviews, talked about McCain's propensity to "explode," regardless of the circumstances.

"The thought of him being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Cochran said. "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

He's a flip-flopper. And he's out of touch. And he's frequently confused and befuddled. And he's an angry candidate running a desperately negative campaign. And he's self-righteous. And he's a hypocrite. And he's surprisingly immature and dishonest.

"He is not the McCain I endorsed,"

"He keeps saying, 'Who is Barack Obama?' I would ask the question, 'Who is John McCain?' because his campaign has become rather disappointing to me.

"I'm disappointed in the tenor and the personal attacks on the part of the McCain campaign, when he ought to be talking about the issues."

Lincoln Chafee, a former Republican U.S. senator from Rhode Island, said he's voting for Obama and urging others to do likewise.

"That's not my kind of Republicanism," said Chafee, who now calls himself an independent. "I saw what Bush and Cheney did. They came in with a (budget) surplus and a stable world, and look what's happened now. In eight short years they've taken one peaceful and prosperous world, and they've torn it into tatters."

As for McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for his running mate, "there's no question she's totally unqualified," Chafee said.

What the campaign left out was the rest of the speech, in which Mr. Obama in fact called for greater regulation of the mortgage industry

Earlier this week, The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) launched a campaign to persuade Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to drop the adjective “Islamic” when describing terrorists and extremists. But the McCain campaign has refused to budge, saying that he will continue to refer to Islam when talking about terrorism

Sarah Palin has given herself a pre-emptive pardon, clearing herself of any wrongdoing in an abuse of power investigation.

Trying to head off a potentially embarrassing state ethics report on the Republican vice presidential nominee, campaign officials released their own report last night that clears her in the so-called 'Troopergate' probe.

The commissioner, Walter Monegan, says he was dismissed in July for resisting pressure from Mrs Palin's husband, Todd Palin, and numerous top aides to fire state trooper Mike Wooten.

Lawmakers are expected to release their own findings today. Campaign officials for Mr McCain and Mrs Palin have yet to see that report - the result of an investigation that began before she was tapped as McCain's running mate,
