English teacher Jessica Price, who knows the victim and most of the arrested suspects, said the girl has helped in conflict-mediation groups [and] wanted to join the Police Explorers, a Boy Scouts group that lets boys and girls learn law enforcement with local police… That such a girl could be so brutalized speaks more to a pack mentality, stoked by booze and street machismo, than it does to the general character of Richmond High's youths, Price said.

"Those boys who did what they did weren't picturing that girl as a human," she said. "I think you see these kinds of boys at a lot of high schools - so desensitized it was like they saw her as a toy. Boys like that - there aren't many like them, but they can be so hard. All they needed was something to set them off."

She told a school district safety panel last week that some girls trying to find out who had watched the rape were being threatened in the hallways - and that, too, she blames on a desensitized mentality.

Last weekend's gang rape at Richmond High School was almost bound to happen. All it needed was a spark - the elements were already there.
The courtyard where the attack erupted was the most infamous spot on campus, an out-of-the-way, poorly lit venue for gang initiations and dopers lighting up joints.
The 15-year-old victim was a vulnerable girl who attended church and wanted to be a police scout, but also worried counselors by trying too hard to please the school's bad boys.
As for the suspects: They were a mix of the bad boys, the wannabe bad boys, and the hardened, grown-up bad boys who had aged out of school.
All it took for things to lurch out of control, investigators, students and community leaders say, was opportunity - and that came when the girl left the school dance Saturday night, walked by a group of bad boys boozing hard in the unlit courtyard, and accepted their invitation to hang out.

THE Government's chief adviser on drugs caused fury last night by claiming booze and fags are more dangerous than LSD.

Professor David Nutt also said the risk of taking ecstasy was no worse than riding a horse - and blasted the decision to upgrade cannabis to a class B drug.

He called for all drugs to be ranked by a "harm" index - with cocaine, heroin, barbiturates and methadone the only ones more harmful than alcohol.

Tobacco would rank ninth, ahead of cannabis, LSD and ecstasy.

Professor Nutt, chairman of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, said smoking cannabis created only a "small risk" of psychotic illness.

He said: "No one is suggesting that drugs are not harmful. The critical question is scale." He attacked the "artificial" separation of alcohol and tobacco from illegal drugs.

Shadow Home Office Minister James Brokenshire said: "Rather than adding clarity to the debate on drug classification, his comments will add confusion."

The brightest light after hours along the stretch of Franklin Street at 15th is a green neon martini glass above the entrance of the Layover lounge.

Gone are the pool-playing patrons, cheap booze and vinyl bar stools. In their place are recycled wood shelves, hand-sewn throw pillows, retro hanging lamps, plush arm chairs and a lot of gold, purple and green.

Think Las Vegas meets Marrakech, circa 1970.

The owners put a creative bare-budget, do-it-yourself spin on the kind of eclectic places scattered about cities around the world. Thus the name, Layover

local DJs operating from a small stage, or music from an Internet juke box installed near the bar and programmed by Martinez and Turner with mod, ambient tunes.

The drinks are in the medium price range. A martini (alas, served less than chilled in my case) and a Seven and Seven cost $16. The plum whiskey buck cocktail, a mixture of ginger beer, fresh lemon juice and plum jam from Martinez's backyard, goes for $8.

But, seriously....the hypocracy of the nation pushing booze and pills massively on TV everyday, while sending pot smokers to jail, is at a turning point.

The turning point is that the U.S. will stop using federal law to arrest individual marijuana consumers.

This allows each of the 50-states to set their own laws about it...sort of like the idea of our Constitution and democracy intended -- prior to evil leaders trying to use a "War on Drugs," as as excuse before the "Global War on Terrorism," came along.

14 states have already made personal consumption of marijuana a non-criminal offense (so no need to rush out to northern California...although it's thriving out there, no doubt)

These states did this change even though it was moot ---- till now.

Now, it's not "moot." - more states (like mine) now seeking ballot init

In a sharp policy shift, the Obama administration told federal attorneys not to prosecute patients who use marijuana for medical reasons or dispensaries in states where it has been legalized.

A Justice Department official said the formal guidelines were issued Monday to reflect President Barack Obama's views.

The Bush administration had said it could enforce the federal law against marijuana and that it trumped state laws.

The decision was praised by activists in California

There are a few reasons why we might find this funny. First there’s the inherently ridiculous contradiction—the recognition of absurdity is often funny.

Or it might be the surprise factor: Homer using alcohol to toast…alcohol!

But another possibility is that it’s funny because it’s true.

And those who find it particularly funny might be those who’ve actually experienced both claims (booze wreaks havoc in their lives, but they also drink to ease their pain).

In fact much of what we find humorous can reveal our beliefs. Since laughter is typically an unconscious, automatic response it is a useful measure for laying bare individual biases.

Federal prosecutors filed fraud charges this week against three people who worked at Jefferson's Liquor Palace.

The alleged scheme worked this way: Food stamp recipients would get cash from the store in exchange for swiping larger amounts off their electronic cards. The store would then be reimbursed by the U.S. Agriculture Department.

Sprightly Dorothy Peel celebrated turning 107 - and claimed daily boozing was her secret to a long life.

The pensioner enjoys a half pint of sherry and two whiskies every day - as well as the odd ciggie.

Dot, who also had pink champagne for her birthday, said: "So much for smoking and drinking is not good for you. I'm living proof that a little of what you fancy does you good."

She believes never having had kids also helped and added: "That's probably why I look and feel so good."

She once smoked 20 a day but cut down when she got bronchitis at 96 and doctors warned her life was in danger. Dot, who lives in a home in Bridlington, East Yorks, said: "I never dreamt I'd get to 107. I'm a cheeky character and love an occasional cigarette."

She puts her love of the good life down to husband Frederick giving her gin in an air raid shelter. She said: "He opened a bottle and I was hooked."

Well in the next few days lawmakers will focus their attention on another nemesis:" "Big Alcohol." Some legislators here believe that beer ads encourage kids to drink

So tomorrow they'll pitch a bill that would ban alcohol ads on all government property, including public transportation

This would mean no Budweiser posters on the T. The cash-strapped MBTA could probably use the dough.

A group who supports the legislation say it is "unfathomable" that the MBTA would accept advertising money from Big Alcohol in a state where underage drinking is so prevalent

Will taking alcohol ads off subways, buses and bus stops really have an impact on underage drinking?
