Do you believe in God? "I'm not an atheist. I don't think I can call myself a pantheist. The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn't know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws."

Christians burning Bibles!

This is happening at a small church in the town my father was born and grew up in, Canton, N.C. Also, this is just another example of Christians against Christians, one declaring to have superior and divine knowledge of the “true word” via the King James Bible. All other translations of the Bible are “of the devil”, according to Pastor Marc Grizzard. One woman interviewed says “In my opinion, the King James version is the only version.” These folks are showing their total lack of knowledge concerning the Bible’s history (amongst other things).

The “wrong” versions of the Bible are not the only books being burned. Books of many Christian authors are also on the burn list, including the Rev. Billy Graham, Dr. James Dobson, Mother Theresa, Rick Warren, Tim LaHaye. This just goes to show us, eventually the Christians will but themselves out of business by fighting amongst themselves.

There are millions of these people in the US - their numbers are growing.

JK ROWLING was denied a top US honour because President George Bush's advisers believed her books "encouraged witchcraft", it was claimed last night.

A new book reveals the Scots-based Harry Potter author was nominated for a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

But White House officials objected because they said she promoted SORCERY in her boy wizard series, which has been made into smash-hit movies starring Daniel Radcliffe

So they stopped JK receiving the US's top gong for civilians who contribute to America, world peace or culture.

The claim is made in Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor, written by Matt Latimer, an ex-speechwriter for Bush.

He said "narrow thinking" led "people in the White House to actually object to giving the author JK Rowling a presidential medal because the Harry Potter books encourage witchcraft".

It’s amazing how many people seem not to know where to look information up, or perhaps don’t care, as they have things other than accuracy on their agenda. Take Rocco Landesman, the new head of the National Endowment of the Arts. In a speech in Brooklyn last week, he said of Barack Obama, “This is the first president that actually writes his own books since Teddy Roosevelt and arguably the first to write them really well since Lincoln.”

Third, Landesman implicitly accuses Theodore Roosevelt of being, unlike Barack Obama, a second-rate writer. Roosevelt wrote a total of 38 books in his life (not to mention countless magazine articles and thousands of letters, all while holding a day job and living only sixty years). His first, The Naval War of 1812, written when he was 23, is considered a basic historical text on that subject and is still both highly readable and in print. Will The Audacity of Hope be in print a 125 years after it was published?

Movies like the Harry Potter films will not be screened. Lord of the Rings, and even The Wizard of Oz will have to be banned. And what about science fiction films? Alien, Predator and others, may be full of horror, or lack unexplained traditional elements, and thus, will not fit in any religious teaching."

One outcome of the Puteri Umno general assembly was a call for the Government to ban the production of “horror, mystical and superstitious” movies. It was claimed that films of this genre could weaken the faith of Muslims in the country.

The movement also wanted the authorities to issue a similar ban on all foreign movies of such genres, and also to empower the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) to take action against such productions.

Now, if watching a scary movie is enough to weaken the religious faith of a person, then something is wrong somewhere.

The precedent of banning films, of this specific genre, may set an unhealthy trend.

It will stifle creativity and imagination. It may stop some of us from reading books. It will smother interest, or curiosity.

So I repeat, might it be films today, and books tomorrow?

Kent Jones, Rachel Maddow's connection to the world of entertainment, joined the host on her MSNBC show last night to discuss the momentous news that Carrie Prejean, better known as Miss California (although she has been stripped of her crown), has landed a book deal "in the tradition of Che's 'Motorcycle Diaries' and 'The Autobiography of Malcolm X.'"

As Jones succinctly puts it, the book, titled "Still Standing," is a tell-all memoir, "an inspiring story for anyone who ever had the dream of stopping other people's dreams."

clipper's remarks: The museum defends the intellectual value of what is sure to be a cash cow of an exhibit by noting that the 200 movie props it features offer a window into innovation.

“You see these props and think, ‘How did they do that?’ It is an inspiration for people to explore what it took to create these movie worlds,” said Paul Fontaine, vice president of education at the museum.

And that inspiration is essential to scientific innovation, he says.

“When you think of the foundations of science, it is creativity; what it takes to transform fantasy to the screen. We hope people take away those foundation skills,” Fontaine said.

The museum is home to displays about DNA, electricity, astronomy and anatomy. But some area academics agree a re-creation of Hogwarts is not out of place.

Andrew Cohen, physics professor at Boston University, references popular movies in his lectures to make complex theories tangible.
