North Carolina pastor says his church plans to burn Bibles and books by Christian authors on Halloween to light a fire under true believers.

Pastor Marc Grizzard told Asheville TV station WLOS that the King James version of the Bible is the only one his small western North Carolina church follows. He says all other versions, such as the Living Bible, are "satanic" and "perversions" of God's word.

On Halloween night, Grizzard and the 14 members of the Amazing Grace Baptist Church also will burn music and books by Christian authors, such as Billy Graham and Rick Warren.

Telephone calls to the Amazing Grace Baptist Church and Grizzard's home were not immediately returned Wednesday.

This is happening at a small church in the town my father was born and grew up in, Canton, N.C. Also, this is just another example of Christians against Christians, one declaring to have superior and divine knowledge of the “true word” via the King James Bible. All other translations of the Bible are “of the devil”, according to Pastor Marc Grizzard. One woman interviewed says “In my opinion, the King James version is the only version.” These folks are showing their total lack of knowledge concerning the Bible’s history (amongst other things).

The “wrong” versions of the Bible are not the only books being burned. Books of many Christian authors are also on the burn list, including the Rev. Billy Graham, Dr. James Dobson, Mother Theresa, Rick Warren, Tim LaHaye. This just goes to show us, eventually the Christians will but themselves out of business by fighting amongst themselves.

clipper's remarks: This one certainly belongs in the LOONY BIN because of the bazaar reasoning of this apparently misguided congregation. I wish I could say that this is an isolated case but I know far too many "KING JAMES ONLY" adherents who would probably applaud this behavior.

In my post To King James or Not to King James I wrote at great length on this issue. There has been an ongoing controversy surrounding this issue, but the way this old bird sees things, the crazy antics of this Baptist church makes me wonder if reading the KING JAMES bible causes otherwise rational people to loose all reason.

This pastor and his 14 followers have certainly flown over the cuckoos nest. And that is how I see it! Eagle Out!

The idea that the true word of God is only pure when it is written in early 17^th Century English, with the thous and thees in a book compiled about 1600 years after the death of Jesus Christ is somewhat mind-boggling. The original books that make up the Bible were written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

One also has to scratch ones head what is Christian, religious, or even sensible about burning Bibles and other books. Besides having the odor of Nazi era book burning, the idea of a Christian church burning Christian books smacks one as bizarre behavior. What the Amazing Grace Baptist Church proposes to do lends credence to the idea advanced by some secularists that people of faith have a tendency to do nutty things.

CANTON, N.C. (October 13, 2009)—The Amazing Grace Baptist Church in Canton, N.C. will celebrate Halloween by burning Bibles that aren’t the King James Version, as well as music and books and anything else Pastor Marc Grizzard says is a satanic influence.

Among the authors whose books Grizzard plans to burn are well known ministers Rick Warren and Billy Graham because he says they have occasionally used Bibles other than the King James Version, which is the sole biblical source he considers infallible.

If the ideology conflicts with history, the true believers ignore history, or try to re-write it. If it is contradicted by facts, they ignore the facts, and suppress them by curbing free speech, banning or burning books, or by trying to censor the Internet. I would imagine Sebastian Faulks was asked a straightforward question and gave an honest answer. Lux et veritas ("Light and Truth"), as they used to say at Yale. But I would bet that, in the long run, the Zakaria approach will prevail.

(Full disclosure: Sebastian came to stay at my pad in New Hampshire to research a novel partly set in my neighborhood. Aside from a blazingly vivid description of the breakfasts I made him, don't pick it up if you're looking for glimpses of real life chez Steyn: He turned me into a woman and had sex with me. I thought of issuing a fatwa and burning down his publishers, but I'm not the type to make a fuss.)

It’s not all that surprising that Yale University Press would be wary of reprinting notoriously controversial cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in a forthcoming book. After all, when the 12 caricatures were first published by a Danish newspaper a few years ago and reprinted by other European publications, Muslims all over the world angrily protested, calling the images — which included one in which Muhammad wore a turban in the shape of a bomb — blasphemous. In the Middle East and Africa some rioted, burning and vandalizing embassies; others demanded a boycott of Danish goods; a few nations recalled their ambassadors from Denmark. In the end at least 200 people were killed.

Jytte Klausen, the author of a forthcoming book from Yale University Press about cartoons that set off Muslim riots.
