JILL BOLTE TAYLOR was a neuroscientist working at Harvard’s brain research center when she experienced nirvana.

But she did it by having a stroke.

On Dec. 10, 1996, Dr. Taylor, then 37, woke up in her apartment near Boston with a piercing pain behind her eye. A blood vessel in her brain had popped. Within minutes, her left lobe — the source of ego, analysis, judgment and context — began to fail her. Oddly, it felt great.

The incessant chatter that normally filled her mind disappeared. Her everyday worries — about a brother with schizophrenia and her high-powered job — untethered themselves from her and slid away.

After experiencing intense pain, she said, her body disconnected from her mind. “I felt like a genie liberated from its bottle,” she wrote in her book. “The energy of my spirit seemed to flow like a great whale gliding through a sea of silent euphoria.”

The Complications of Body Piercing

Body piercing in places other than the ear often leads to complications like infections, swelling and bleeding, a new study shows.

The data, compiled in Britain by the Health Protection Agency and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, show that 25 percent of piercings in body areas other than the earlobe lead to complications, with one in 100 piercings resulting in a hospital admission. More than 10,000 people ages 16 and older took part in the survey, which was published online today by the British Medical Journal. A 2002 study of American college students also reported a high rate of complications, with 17 percent of students complaining of problems, including bleeding and infection. Nipple piercing appeared to be the most risky, with a 21 percent rate of bleeding or injury.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A Texas woman who said she was forced to remove a nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane called Thursday for an apology by federal security agents and a civil rights investigation.

"I wouldn't wish this experience upon anyone," Mandi Hamlin said at a news conference. "My experience with TSA was a nightmare I had to endure. No one deserves to be treated this way."

Hamlin, 37, said she was trying to board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas on February 24 when she was scanned by a Transportation Security Administration agent after passing through a larger metal detector without problems.

The female TSA agent used a handheld detector that beeped when it passed in front of Hamlin's chest, the Dallas-area resident said.

Hamlin said she told the woman she was wearing nipple piercings. The agent called over her male colleagues, one of whom said she would have to remove the jewelry, Hamlin said.

She was taken behind a curtain and managed to remove one bar-shaped piercing but had trouble with the second, a ring.

She said she heard male TSA agents snickering as she took out the ring. She was scanned again and was allowed to board even though she still was wearing a belly button ring.

Woman Dies Of Meningitis After Tongue Piercing

BOSTON -- A young Scituate woman has died of viral meningitis after getting an infection from a tongue piercing.

Kate Donovan, 20, died at a Boston hospital Monday, according to family friends.

NewsCenter 5's Mary Saladna reported that an infection soon developed, but antibiotics did not seem to help. Donovan began suffering severe headaches and was hospitalized.

"We couldn’t believe it. We knew she was in the hospital, but we didn’t know she was that sick," said one co-worker.

Bacterial infections and meningitis can be a complication from tongue piercing, according to the Web site WebMD.com.

Meningitis is an infection of the tissue that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of meningitis may appear suddenly and include fever, severe and constant headache, stiff neck or neck pain, nausea and vomiting and rash.

Viral meningitis is not contagious. Health officials said her co-workers and customers are not at risk.

A student has given warning of the potential dangers of body piercings, after she was almost killed when her belly-button stud tore through her stomach “like a bullet” during a car accident.

Jessica Collins, 19, from Radyr, Cardiff, is recovering from surgery at a hospital in Munich, where the crash happened. The seatbelt she was wearing forced the metal stud through her body almost to her spine, causing serious internal injuries.

Her mother, Amanda Beadle, who has flown out to Germany to be by her bedside, compared her daughter’s injuries to a bullet wound and said that she was lucky to be alive. Jessica has urged friends to remove their own piercings.

Jessica was in intensive care for five days, and is not expected to return to Britain until the week after next.

The Army plans to brief Congress about test failures of Dragon Skin body armor after recent news reports touting the vest's capabilities prompted calls from lawmakers for an official explanation.

The service's top soldier equipment buyer, Brig. Gen. Mark Brown, said he plans to meet with lawmakers and staff this week after NBC News broadcast an investigative report Sunday claiming Dragon Skin - which uses a series of interlocking ceramic disks to stop armor-piercing bullets - outperformed armor currently issued by the Army.

"Since the report, we have gotten a flurry of interest" from Capitol Hill, Brown said at a May 21 Pentagon briefing. "We're planning on going over to the Hill ... for discussions with key members."

The Dragon Skin vests tested by the Army in May suffered 13 penetrations in 48 shots, service officials said.

"We ran this vest through the exact same test protocol that every ESAPI supplier goes through," Masters said. "Can you meet the ESAPI requirement or not?

EYE SURGEONS IN Holland have found a way to implant tiny pieces of jewellery - in your eyeballs.

Dutch eye surgeons have implanted tiny pieces of jewellery called "JewelEye" in the mucous membrane of the eyes of six women and one man in cosmetic surgery pioneered by an ophthalmic surgery research and development institute in Rotterdam.

The bits of jewellery are about 4mm wide and come in half-moon or heart shapes.

They are put into the eye's mucous membrane under local anaesthetic. It costs between £270 and £540.

'In my view it is a little more subtle than (body) piercing. It is a bit of a fun thing and a very personal thing for people,' said Gerrit Melles, director of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery. The piece of jewellery is inserted in the conjunctiva -- the mucous membrane lining the inner surface of the eyelids and front of the eyeball - in sterile conditions using an operating microscope in a procedure taking about 15 minutes.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (AP) -- A judge violated a juvenile's free-speech rights when he placed her on probation for posting an expletive-laden entry on MySpace criticizing a school principal, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled.

"While we have little regard for A.B.'s use of vulgar epithets, we conclude that her overall message constitutes political speech," Judge Patricia Riley wrote in the 10-page opinion.

A.B. appealed, arguing that her comments were protected political speech under both the state and federal constitutions because they dealt with school policy.

The Court of Appeals found that the comments were protected and that the juvenile court had unconstitutionally restricted her right of free expression.

Some call it body piercing. Some call it acupuncture. Some call it absurd. Over the last 10 years, a purported weight-loss method that involves getting your ear stapled has slowly picked up steam to the point that states have begun to regulate the practice.

The procedure itself is pretty straightforward. A practitioner uses a specialized staple gun to pierce a slightly protruding piece of cartilage just above and to the left of the tragus portion of the external ear. If you've ever gotten your ear cartilage pierced, you know that it hurts, but it's not like, say, getting shot in the stomach. The surgical-grade, very thin staple remains in the ear from anywhere from six weeks to three months, and the basic idea is that it suppresses the appetite while it's in there. Once the body gets used to the staple, it needs to be repositioned, which means returning to the practitioner to have the ear re-stapled in a slightly different location. Steven Deerwood (who got the piercings) and Jeremy “Jay” Van Wert at Body Matrix, Inc in Bemidji, MN recently did this Guiness attempt — in all they did 2,507 piercings in six hours and fifteen minutes. I’m still waiting for someone to crack the old [unofficial] Berkeley 5000 record, but two thousand five-hundred piercings in six hours is quite impressive!
