I really enjoyed testing the Strida during the couple of weeks I had it

The belt drive was something else that I was pretty happy with. I was a little skeptical, so I put it through the paces with some hard uphill pedaling and sprints, even once in the rain. The belt performed flawlessly through it all.

The Strida attracted more attention than any other bike I have ridden.

Though it wasn’t bad for short rides, the fit for me was not ideal. I am 6’ 2” tall, and I feel like I was right at the upper limit of rider height that the bike could reasonably accommodate. The bike is sold a “one size fits all”, but it definitely fit my wife, who is about 5’ 7”, better than it fit me.

it would be a great choice for a lot of people. For someone who commutes to work on a subway or bus part of the way

In a dense urban environment where apartments are small and storage space is limited, the Strida would be a good choice as well

How many grew up riding bikes without helmets, safely, and loved it that way!

In essence: "We are with the government, but will act like your parent instead, and make rules for you to obey or you will lose even your bike riding privileges".

This, seat belt laws, ATV laws, even radical drug laws, etc. represent a liberty-killing totalitarianism by government that thinks it can protect people from themselves. This is over the top!

No bike helmet? Lose your wheels

HOLLISTON - If you're young and ride a bicycle through town without a helmet, you may end up walking back home. Police here are looking for scofflaws and will snatch the pedals from your feet if you've been warned numerous times but still forgo headgear.

Holliston police, frustrated in trying to drive home the point that riding without a helmet is dangerous and illegal, are hoping the tactic will finally get the attention of young riders.

We don't want to seize bikes, but for the kids who repeatedly ignore the warnings, it will happen."

Riding a bike - or scooter or in-line skates - without a helmet is illegal for anyone younger than 17 in Massachusetts.

The Helmet Cam is something I made a couple of years ago to shoot some bits for my comedy night. It’s a mini surveillance camera mounted on the front of a bicycle helmet which makes the head of the wearer appear stationary while everything around them slides around nauseatingly. It’s a technique that’s been used a lot (Martin Scorcese and Peter Gabriel spring to mind), but it always occurred to me that the bike helmet version might be good for some kind of music video. When I found out we were doing the Radiohead webcast I got to work making 5 new ‘units’ for the band. A bike helmet is ideal for mounting the camera because you can strap it on tight enough for it not to wobble too much, but it has the downside of making you look like a bit of a prat so I was concerned that a band like Radiohead might be uncomfortable with that. Keith dodged a serious bullet thanks to his massive stupidity

He bikes to Walmart today and as soon as he gets to the electronics department, realizes his wallet's fallen out, probably somewhere along the highway

So he takes the memory card he wanted, puts it up in his baggy sleeve, and goes to leave

Naturally, security stops him as he gets within 5 feet of the front doors. This huge obese woman who is obviously having a really bad day - or just hates her job

She stops him, GRABS his arm, RIPS up his sleeve, and WRENCHES the card out of his hand

He knows he's screwed so he starts crying in the middle of the fucking store. He cries all the way back to the security office, and everyone's staring at him the whole way

hat's the awesome part. The manager takes a look at him, notices the bike helmet, poorly fitting clothes, lack of any ID whatsoever, and the fact that he's crying like a three year old

He was let go and the security woman got chewed out for hurting a "retarded kid"

A Czech motorcycle racer who was involved in a smash that saw another biker ride over his head came round and started speaking perfect English

Matej Kus had only mastered a few basic phrases of the language at the time he was knocked off his bike during a race in the UK

After the smash he was unconscious for 45 minutes, then came round and amazed his team-mates by asking questions in perfect English - with no trace of an accent.

Unfortunately, his new-found language skills did not last.

After the bang on the head - which split his helmet open - he lost his memory for 48 hours.

But when it returned he forgot the English he had miraculously learned.

Now back in the Czech Republic, he said through an interpreter that he wanted to earn English properly.

"Hopefully I can pick some English up so I'll be able to speak it without someone having to hit me over the head," he explained.

Google To Employees: Want A Free Bike?

Late last year, the California-based company announced that they would be installing 1.6 megawatts of solar energy atop their Mountain View campus buildings; the largest corporate solar venture in the U.S. Now, they're giving each employee a bike and encouraging everyone to ride to work on two wheels. The program will be available to more than 2,000 permanent employees located in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Each bike will branded with the Google name and come with a free helmet. There will be plenty of options to choose from for both men and women; with even a "fold-up" version available for people who can only bike halfway. According to Google's Director of Human Resources and Staffing overseas, Liane Hornsey, the bikes will give each employee the opportunity "keep fit and healthy, get to know their city better and reduce the environmental impact of their journey to work." Who can argue with that?

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- Ryan Lipscomb lived to tell how it felt to have a truck run over his head. "Really strange," he said.

Lipscomb, 26 of Seattle, suffered a concussion but was otherwise unhurt. He was shaken up, especially after he saw his mangled helmet.

Lipscomb, a graduate student in medical physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was riding down a bike path in Madison on Friday afternoon. As he approached an intersection, he said, he noticed the oncoming delivery truck preparing to make a right turn in front of him.

The truck wasn't going to stop, Lipscomb said, so he slammed on his brakes, flipping his bike and landing in the street.

A moment later the truck rolled over his head.

"I didn't see it coming, but I sure felt it roll over my head," he told The Capital Times newspaper. "It feels really strange to have a truck run over your head."

His black helmet was flattened, tread marks visible on the cracked frame.

Last September a plucky psychologist at the University of Bath in England announced the results of a study in which he played both researcher and guinea pig

His findings, published in the March 2007 issue of Accident Analysis & Prevention, state that when Walker wore a helmet drivers typically drove an average of 3.35 inches closer to his bike than when his noggin wasn't covered. But, if he wore a wig of long, brown locks—appearing to be a woman from behind—he was granted 2.2 inches more room to ride.

"The implication," Walker says, "is that any protection helmets give is canceled out by other mechanisms, such as riders possibly taking more risks and/or changes in how other road users behave towards cyclists.

Lightning Strike Takes Down Biker

Witnesses said they saw a flash of light just before the yellow motorcycle crashed into the center concrete divider.

Gary Missi, of Longmont, Colo., was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unknown if Missi was killed by the lightning strike or by the crash that followed, authorities said. An autopsy is pending.

However, Missi's bike was not badly damaged and he had injuries consistent with a lightning strike, Westminster police said. Missi was wearing a helmet.

"We get some crazy things, but 'Wow,'" said Westminster police spokesman Tim Read.

Missi's motorcycle came to rest about 150 yards from where lightning blasted an 18-by-8-inch crater, 4-inches deep that blew chunks of asphalt across the highway and slightly damaged other vehicles.

Authorities said it's incredible that no one else was hurt.

"Five o'clock, rush hour traffic on Highway 36 westbound -- that no one else was struck, hurt or anything is just amazing," Read said.

State officials said that there were more than 2,000 lightning strikes recorded in the state on Wednesday. Witnesses said that the lightning came out of nowhere.

Motorcycle struck by lightning

U.S. Highway 36 was shut down to one lane in each direction for about two hours between Sheridan Boulevard and Church Ranch Boulevard while the accident was investigated and debris was cleared from the highway.

Road crews repaired the punctured roadway after the investigation was complete.

MADRID (Reuters) - Hundreds of nude cyclists pedaled around Spanish cities on Saturday to protest against car-clogged streets and demand greater respect for pollution-free transport.

With slogans like "one car less" and "bio methanol" painted on their backs, the naked cyclists staged Spain's third annual Ciclonudista or "Nudecycle" in Madrid, Barcelona and Pamplona.

The protest was part of world-wide naked bike riding events on Saturday across Europe, North America and South America.

"We feel naked when up against traffic because people don't see the bicycle as just another means of transport," said Madrid cyclist Ramon Linaza, wearing only a cycle helmet and shoes.

Towing cardboard cars with gaping jaws, protesters said the rapid rise of automobile ownership in Spain was turning city streets into ever more hostile and dangerous cycling territory.

Organizers said the bicycle was a healthy and efficient form of urban transport that is largely ignored by Spanish drivers and city planners.

Central Madrid has few bike paths and cyclists are a rarity on its streets. Barcelona has the most bike paths of any Spanish city, according to cycling activists.

Per capita car ownership has rocketed in Spain after a decade of strong economic growth.
