But I admit I had absolutely no knowledge of how to keep bees or how to get started and figured my beekeeping desire would stay an unfulfilled dream. So naturally, when I came across the "Beekeeping 101" eBook, I was extremely skeptical. It just didn't seem possible that anyone could learn how to keep bees and get delicious honey by following the instructions in an eBook. In 2007, large commercial beekeepers started reporting big drop-offs in their bee colony populations. By 2008, estimated colony losses of between 30 and 70% were being reported, as a flurry of bad news about bees made the media rounds.

But a recent analysis of global honey bee populations (by Aizen and Harder*) shows a 45% increase in total numbers since 1961.

The same researchers note, however, that the global stock of honey bees is growing slower than the global demand for them–which comes primarily from the cultivation of “luxury” crops like fruits and nuts. The the year round demand for items like cherries, mangoes, almonds and pistachios is far out-pacing world-wide production, leading to the perception of a shortage of pollinators.

Rosalind Wiseman is the author of Queen Bees & Wannabes, the 2002 book that inspired the movie Mean Girls. A new edition comes out today—and pretty much scares the shit out of me.

High school was bad enough when I was a teenager. But reading Wiseman's new book—which expands on the original by discussing technology and why "Mean Girl" culture has filtered down to younger girls—I realized how much trickier being a teenager is today. When I was in high school, if I got in a fight with someone, maybe we'd exchange a couple of bitchy notes. There would definitely be some behind-the-back gossip. But I never had to worry that someone was going to set up a fake Facebook account in my name or trash me on MySpace or unearth naked photos of me on their cell phone.

Why did you feel like you needed to write a new edition of Queen Bees and Wannabees?

More bee pests found in far north

Biosecurity Queensland says another swarm of asian honeybees has been detected at Yarrabah near Cairns in far north Queensland.

The pest insect was detected on the Atherton Tablelands for the first time in August.

It can carry a mite that beekeepers say could devastate european honeybees.

Biosecurity Queensland's Daryl Mannell says it is possible the new swarm at Yarrabah may have been driven out of another area.

"We've had a lot of smokey situations, it's even on wind currents, so ... they could take off, they don't like smokey [conditions] ... because beekeepers use smoke as part of their process. It's quite possible that's even drive them out," he said.

Mr Mannell says researchers have found the asian honeybee is a bully.

"There's only ... a given amount of flowering sources where they can source nectar and so forth from. So if you've the asian honeybees out-competing the european honeybees, that could seriously impact on the populations of european honeybees," he said.

Greenpeace says tests on honey from some commercial beehives in Victoria show people could be eating genetically engineered (GE) products without knowing it.

The organisation took samples from hives near Geelong, west of Melbourne, after discovering GE canola growing by the side of the road at Horsham.

Greenpeace spokeswoman Louise Sales says beekeepers and non-GE farmers are falling victim to GE canola.

"Because GE farmers aren't required to notify their neighbours when they're growing a GE crop, beekeepers have got no way of knowing if their bees are feeding on GE pollen and nectar," she said.

"They've got no legal recourse if their crops or their products are contaminated with GE material.

"So despite the fact that less than 3 per cent of the canola that's being grown this year is being genetically engineered, it poses a very real threat to non-GE farmers who want to maintain a GE-free supply chain."

As Graham White, a beekeeper in the Scottish Borders and an environmental author states: "Putting Syngenta in charge of UK research into the causes of honeybee deaths is arguably the equivalent of putting the tobacco companies in charge of research into lung cancer."

It’s a foregone conclusion that Syngenta will find that they are not responsible for the decline in bee population.

This is a clear case of government in the back pocket of another corporation. And once again, the public is powerless to have any effect on stopping this travesty and government just rubs our noses in the fact.
