Baldrick with a fellow rescue hedgehog at the centre

A bald hedgehog abandoned by his mother in a garden in Norfolk is being treated at a wildlife rescue centre in a bid to encourage his spikes to grow.

Baldrick, named after the character from the television programme Blackadder, was brought to Foxy Lodge wildlife rescue centre, Great Yarmouth.

He is now being cared for by Tonia and John Garner in the hope he can be eventually released into the wild.

Treatment includes antiseptic scrubs and baby oil massages.

Mr Garner told the BBC News website that Baldrick was spotted in a garden being pushed along by its mother.

He said: "They are not very good parents in the wild and if they have a family of six babies, about two will never make it."

Baldrick's mother eventually took her other babies away, abandoning her bald son who ended up at the wildlife centre.

Mr Garner said when Baldrick was brought in in August aged about six weeks he weighed 240g, but is now up to about 800g.

French newborns tend to cry with rising melody patterns, slowly increasing in pitch from the beginning to the end, whereas German newborns seem to prefer falling melody patterns, findings that are both consistent with differences between the languages.

These photographs of albatross chicks were made just a few weeks ago on Midway Atoll, a tiny stretch of sand and coral near the middle of the North Pacific. The nesting babies are fed bellies-full of plastic by their parents, who soar out over the vast polluted ocean collecting what looks to them like food to bring back to their young. On this diet of human trash, every year tens of thousands of albatross chicks die on Midway from starvation, toxicity, and choking.

To document this phenomenon as faithfully as possible, not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world's most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent.

Dozens of baby girls in southern China have reportedly been taken from parents who broke family-planning laws, and then sold for adoption overseas.

An investigation by the state-owned Southern Metropolis News found that about 80 girls in one county had been sold for $3,000 (£1,800) to foreigners.

The babies were taken when the parents could not pay the steep fines imposed for having too many children.

Local officials may have forged papers to complete the deals, the report said.

Parents in rural areas are allowed two children, unlike urban dwellers who are allowed one.

But if they have more than that, they face a fine of about $3,000 -several times many farmers’ annual income.

Nearly 80 baby girls in a county in Guizhou province, in the south of the country, were confiscated from their families when their parents could not or would not pay the fine, Southern Metropolis News said.

The girls were taken into orphanages and sold to couples from the United States and a number of European countries

A Victorian baby with a rare metabolic disease has amazed the medical world with her positive response to an experimental drug used only on mice.

Baby Z was born with molybdenum cofactor deficiency type A, a metabolic disorder that there was no known treatment for. The rare disease kills about 100 babies each year.

The disease stops the body from expelling sulphide and causes babies to suffer seizures and progressive brain damage until they die, usually in early infancy.

But the parents of Baby Z and their friends refused to accept that the situation was hopeless and discovered a plant biologist in Germany had come up with a compound he thought could treat the disorder.

Even though Professor Gunther Schwarz's treatment had only been tested on mice, he couriered all the compound he had to Melbourne in the hope it could save Baby Z.

The baby's doctor, Alex Veldman, a neo-natal specialist at the Monash Medical Centre, says he was excited about the treatment but wary.
