he Temple Institute (in Hebrew, Machon HaMikdash), founded in 1987, is a non-profit educational and religious organization located in the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. The Institute is dedicated to every aspect of the Biblical commandment to build the Holy Temple of G-d on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. Our short-term goal is to rekindle the flame of the Holy Temple in the hearts of mankind through education. Our long-term goal is to do all in our limited power to bring about the building of the Holy Temple in our time. Thus, the Institute's efforts include raising public awareness about the Holy Temple, and the central role that it occupies in the spiritual life of mankind. The many areas of activities conducted by the Institute combine research, seminars, publications, and conferences, as well as the production of educational materials.

The major focus of the Institute is its efforts towards the beginning of the actual rebuilding of the Holy Temple.

California Forcing Atheists to Attend Religious Programs

In Shasta County, California, atheist Barry A. Hazle is suing the state department of corrections because he was given a blatantly unconstitutional choice: go to jail or attend a religious 12-step program as a condition of his parole after a drug possession conviction. Hazle didn't object to participating in some program to deal with addiction, but he wanted a secular program rather than a religious one. Government officials refused and sent him back to jail for what amounts to refusing to go to religious services.

The 12-step program required "acknowledgment of the existence of a supernatural God,....deference to a monotheistic 'higher power,' and participation in prayer," the suit alleges. He was subsequently arrested for violating parole and sent back to prison for four months, the suit alleges.

Courts across the nation have recognized that the 12-step method is religious in nature

The nation's largest group of atheists and agnostics is suing President Bush, the governor of Wisconsin and other officials over the federal law designating a National Day of Prayer.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sued Friday in U.S. district court, arguing that the president's mandated proclamations calling on Americans to pray violates a constitutional ban on government officials endorsing religion.

The day of prayer, held each year on the first Thursday of May, creates a "hostile environment for nonbelievers, who are made to feel as if they are political outsiders," the lawsuit said.

The foundation has filed numerous lawsuits in recent years, including one rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court last year that attacked President Bush's faith-based initiative.

The White House and Doyle spokesman Lee Sensenbrenner had no comment on the lawsuit. A message seeking comment from the task force was not returned Friday.

Military hit with 2nd suit over religious freedom

An atheist soldier has sued Defense Secretary Robert Gates, alleging he was forced to participate in public prayers and that the military systematically violates the religious freedoms of its personnel.

Spc. Dustin Chalker, who has served in Korea and Iraq, is the second soldier at the northeast Kansas post to file such a lawsuit. The New Mexico-based Military Religious Freedom Foundation joined Chalker as a plaintiff in his lawsuit, filed Sept. 25 in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan.

Both lawsuits allege the military permits religious discrimination by fundamentalist Christians who try to force their views on others, especially subordinates.

Chalker’s lawsuit also cites a “spiritual handbook” for soldiers carrying the endorsement of Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East. The lawsuit alleges the book promotes Christianity and denigrates nonbelievers. Petraeus is not named as a defendant.

Should Atheists Vote for the Republican Party?

Why is there a problem for atheists who might be inclined to support the Republican Party? Although it was not inevitable, today Republicans at all levels of government across the country are the primary force behind legislation which would:

Undermine the teaching of evolution and promote the teaching of creationism

Criminalize abortion in as many cases as possible, if not in all cases

Provide funding to religious groups that discriminate on the basis of religion

Provide funding for religious and theological training, as with ministers or priests

Establish prison rehabilitation programs that emphasize fundamentalist Christianity

Have the government endorse the Ten Commandments

Use government power to give a privileged status to Christianity and Christian beliefs

Lemaitre was still pretty hazy about how the process of expansion could have begun. Like many scientists, he was still committed to the idea of a static Universe of unchanging size...

Einstein, though interested, was largely dismissive, telling Lemaitre that, "Your calculations are good, but your physics is terrible". Einstein was also a little suspicious of the religious implications of these ideas. He declined to describe himself as an atheist (or a theist, or a pantheist) and liked to use the vocabulary of religion, most famously in his misguided rejection of much of quantum physics, "God does not play dice!"

AN ATHEIST subjected a devout Christian woman to a “relentless” campaign of harassment in which he smeared dog faeces on her car and urinated on her doorstep.

Timothy Brown, of Edwin Avenue, Woodbridge, may seek medical help after a year-long bid to change Helen Watson's religious beliefs.

Brown, 37, who is married and has a child, pleaded guilty at South East Magistrates' Court in Ipswich yesterday to racially aggravated harassment between September 1, 2007, and September 10 this year.

The ordeal began in September last year after Mrs Watson had placed a religious fish sticker in her car.

After that point, she would regularly find that another sticker had been put on top of it with words such as “myth”, “deceived”, “sucker” and “fiction”, which she said were derogatory to her religious views.

It's been an action-packed week for anyone who enjoys a good old row between science and religion, faith and reason, the men in white coats and the ones in dog collars.

First we had physicists flicking a very expensive switch in their hunt for the God particle (although surely this is doomed to failure if they don't believe He exists).

Then Prof Michael Reiss, director of education for the Royal Society, claimed teachers should discuss creationism with pupils and that "banging on about evolution" didn't change the beliefs of the devoutly religious.

Next the Church of England decided to muddy the waters by saying sorry to Charles Darwin for criticising his theory of evolution.

Now Christian Voice, the evangelical group best known for leading opposition to Jerry Springer - The Opera, has tried to get in on the act by issuing a public apology to Britain's best-known atheist, Prof Richard Dawkins.

In a parody of the Church's letter to Darwin, it declares that it has decided to issue a posthumo

New Baylor survey challenges beliefs about beliefs

Study: 1 in 5 say they've heard God's voice; no more atheists than in past; megachurches can be intimate.

Baylor University's Institute for Studies of Religion has released data from its latest survey on religious belief and practice in the United States. The institute is rolling out surveys every two years through 2018.

That was a misreading of American believers, Stark said. In the latest Baylor survey, he said he was surprised at the number of people who say they have heard God's voice (20 percent), felt protected by a guardian angel (55 percent) or witnessed a miraculous physical healing (23 percent).

God is still not dead, and atheism isn't growing, Stark said.

Republicans more than Democrats (77 to 54 percent).

Science vs. Religion seems to be a running theme for the 21st century. Yet, the two sides of the debate have much in common. Not being willing to consider other's perspective is a common occurrence in both worlds.

Why does the universe seem so fine-tuned for the emergence of life, including intelligent life capable of asking that "why" question?

Robert Winston criticises dangerous 'science delusion'

The emphasis on trying to prove the big bang theory could be interpreted as a swipe at religion.

Lord Robert Winston has renewed his attack on atheist writers such as Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and Christopher Hitchens, whose arguments he said were "dangerous", "irresponsible" and "very divisive".

The science populariser and fertility expert said that the more bombastic arguments of atheist scientists were making dialogue between religion and science more difficult.

"I would argue that the 'God Delusion' approach is actually very divisive because it is the one way surely of not winning over opposing views … Religious people can say, 'look these guys just don't understand us'."

"We need to be much more sophisticated in how we handle these problems in our society and I don't think the propositions of Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett and a number of other writers have really furthered useful healthy debate. I think actually they've limited it – that worries me"
