It is the first intact Wari burial site discovered at Huaca Pucllana in the capital Lima, and researchers believe it dates from about 700 AD.

They exposed her face, revealing two big, bright blue orbs in her eye sockets. They extracted the other adult mummies, which were also whole, earlier in the week.

The Wari people lived and ruled in what is now Peru for some 500 years, between 600 AD and 1100 AD. Their capital was near modern-day Ayacucho, in the Andes, but they traveled widely and are known for their extensive network of roads. Flores said about 30 tombs have been found at Huaca Pucllana, surrounded by Lima's busy streets.

Tags: peru, archaeology

<clipSource>http://mysterytopia.com/</clipSource>

David Hatcher Childress: Extraterrestrial Archaeology

clipped by: WIDEEYECINEMA

Clip Source: www.sigh7ings.com

David Hatcher Childress: Extraterrestrial Archaeology

David Hatcher Childress lectures using official NASA and Soviet photos, as well as other photos taken via telescope. The first Westerner to see the site, Lucas wrote that he seemed to be confronted with remains of several cities inhabited by fairies. Later, during the mid-nineteenth century, William Hamilton described it as the best preserved ancient city he had ever seen. Toward the end of that century, Sagalassos and its theater became famous among students of classical antiquity. Yet large scale excavations along the west coast at sites like Ephesos and Pergamon, attracted all the attention. Gradually Sagalassos was forgotten...until a British-Belgian team led by Stephen Mitchell started surveying the site in 1985.

<clipSource>http://www.archaeology.org/interactive/sagalassos/</clipSource>

Experimental archaeology and music

clipped by: yewtree

Clip Source: www.archaeology.org

Elizabeth Blake suspended three flint blades from a small wooden frame. Holding her cell phone in one hand, she took a piece of antler in the other and gently struck each blade once. Over a bad transatlantic connection, our phone conversation had been difficult, but the tones from the four-inch-long blades came through—clear, sweet, and crystalline. They sounded like hand bells or struck goblets. The blades are replicas of 30,000-year-old artifacts from the sites of Isturitz in the French Pyrenees and Geißenklösterle in southwestern Germany.

Tags: archaeology

<clipSource>http://www.archaeology.org/0809/abstracts/rockmusic.html</clipSource>

Sagalassos, city in the clouds

clipped by: yewtree
clipper's remarks: This is where they found sculptures of the Emperor Hadrian and the Empress Faustina

Clip Source: www.archaeology.org

City in the Clouds

Archæologists investigating the Tsodilo Hills there found a secluded cave, the “Rhino Cave”, next to a rock resembling a python’s head. Hundreds of man-made indentations peppered the rock, known to the San (Bushmen) as the “Rock that Whispers”.

A test pit dug in front of the python simulacrum revealed many stones that had been used to make the indentations. Together with these tools, some of which were over 70,000 years old, more than 13,000 artefacts were unearthed, including burnt spearheads and possible ritual articles. The rock’s natural pythonesque appearance had been enhanced by human carving and grinding – the python is a key figure in San mythology.

<clipSource>http://www.forteantimes.com/strangedays/archaeology/52/the_rock_that_whispers.html</clipSource>

Futuristic Excavation

clipped by: balthazarus
clipper's remarks: However, Weyrich noted, Princeton's system will never replace the experience, contextual knowledge and "soft skills" that conservators and archaeologists bring to the table.

In ancient Greece, there was no such thing as "secular athletics," said David Romano, senior research scientist at the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. "Feats of prowess and agility were meant to please Zeus, who picked the most worthy athlete to be the victor."

Eventually, it was competition that put an end to Olympic Games in A.D. 393 after more than 1,000 years: Christianity vs. paganism.

The games were the most "conspicuous and popular aspect at pagan festivals, attracting tens of thousands of people," Romano said this week, "so Holy Roman Emperor Theodosius abolished them."

It took another 15 centuries for the Olympic ideals to resurface.

In 1894, a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin resurrected the Olympic Games, complete with symbolic fire, music, and pageantry that echoed its ancient past.

A straightforward and unassuming man whose father was a well-respected Alaskan congressman, Dr. Nick Begich has been waging a long and often lonely campaign to raise the public’s awareness of the extraordinary perils and potentials of new technologies that can act upon the brain and influence our cognitive and somatic capacities, often without us knowing about them. At first, many of the military initiatives and scientific research projects described by Dr. Begich sound like science fiction — the stuff of Philip K. Dick’s most paranoid visions — but they are quite real, and in many cases already available. A huge trove of documents, articles and public testimonies assembled by Begich’s team can be found at the website of The Lay Institute.

<clipSource>http://www.realitysandwich.com/military_minefields</clipSource>

Strawtown Archaeology Project

clipped by: aerynvala
clipper's remarks: I would make me quite sad if it turned out to be a fraud, but ultimately it is better to know the truth. I'm looking at you Greece.

Clip Source: tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com

Why Not Test the Phaistos Disc?

If there are suspicions that the renowned Phaistos Disc is fake, why not address them by determining its age? That was the excellent question raised by Lab readers in response to a post on the disc. The short answer is that the keepers of the disc — the Herakleion Archaeological Museum in Crete, where the purportedly ancient artifact was found a century ago — won’t allow it.

For a longer answer, I consulted Jerome M. Eisenberg, the editor-in-chief of Minerva and the author of the article in that archaeological journal questioning the disc’s authenticity. He provided more details, and also addressed other questions raised by Lab readers. He told me that he has been trying for many years to test the disk (as well as another artifact at the museum, the Archalochori Axe, which he considers suspicious):

I’ll let you know what I hear from the Herakleion Archaeological Museum.

Tags: science, phaistos disc, archaeology, forgery, hoax, minos, undeciphered scripts

<clipSource>http://tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/07/why-not-test-the-phaistos-disc/</clipSource>

Afghanistan’s Secret Treasure

clipped by: invictus
clipper's remarks: Afghanistan has probably one of the richest cultural and historical heritage, dating back to the third millennium BCE and the land had been a melting pot of Mesopotamian, Harappan, Greek and Chinese civilizations. Unfortunately, the wars and oppressive/dogmatic regimes tried their best to destroy the traces of this brilliant cultural background. Archaeology Magazine's latest issue tells the story of an amazing treasure of ancient artifacts, 95 percent of which was luckily recovered and brought to museums worldwide to be exhibited.

Clip Source: www.archaeology.org

For 20 years the archaeological community believed the artifacts had been destroyed or had disappeared into the antiquities market as a succession of mujahideen warlords won and lost control of Kabul. Finally the Taliban came, and smashed any artifact that seemed vaguely like a religious idol. With the museum collections destroyed or in hiding and the Afghan people struggling to survive, a two-decade rift has opened between the Afghans and the history that defines their nation. An entire generation now entering adulthood has grown up knowing almost nothing about Afghanistan’s place as a melting pot of civilizations from Greece to China.

Tags: archaeology, afghanistan, artifacts, kabul museum

<clipSource>http://www.archaeology.org/0809/abstracts/afghanistan.html</clipSource>

Archaeologists unearth 1,900-year-old chariot

clipped by: WomanInTheMoon11
clipper's remarks: Archaeologist works around a 1,900-year-old well-preserved chariot at an ancient Thracian tomb near the village of Borisovo, some 290 kilometers (180 miles) east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008.
