With predictable frequency, readers send me their ideas for new products, their gripes about existing products, their “why doesn’t someone make…?” brainstorms. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with them, but I try to be as supportive as I can. (The really great ones, I feature in this blog.)

Today, for example, someone sent me a copy of a proposal that he had had a mutual friend deliver to Apple CEO Steve Jobs—a proposal for a new Apple product. “I expect no money for this,” he thoughtfully wrote in his cover letter to Mr. Jobs.

The proposal was that Apple should create a computer for seniors, which my correspondent feels is an underserved market.

That may be true. Maybe this idea is a goldmine waiting to be unearthed. But it seems unrealistic for my reader to feel crushed that Mr. Jobs didn’t embrace his idea.

First, because heaven knows how many similar “You know what you should do?” messages Apple (and Palm, and TiVo, and Microsoft, and Google…) must get a week.

Scientists at Sydney's Garvan Institute of Medical Research say that fibre not only helps keep people regular, it boosts the immune system so it can better combat inflammatory diseases.

When foods high in fibre, such as dried fruit and beans, reach the gut, bacteria convert them to compounds known as short chain fatty acids. These acids are known to alleviate some inflammatory disease in the bowel.

The research, published in the latest edition of Nature, indicated that diet may have profound effects on immune responses or inflammatory diseases, he said.

2 cups blueberries
1 6oz can apple juice concentrate or 12 oz divided, use reminder for something else.

1 heaping TBSP corn starch

Wash and drain blueberries, (can use frozen), and put into saucepan. Add 3 oz apple juice concentrate and cook until berries are softened. Mix 3 oz apple juice concentrate with corn starch in a bowl. Add corn starch mixture to pan and cook until thickened. You can add a little maple syrup if blueberrie syrup is too thick. You can use this to top cheesecake also.

Homemade maple syrup

2 cups white sugar
1 cup boiling water

1/2 tsp maple syrup flavoring

Pour boiling water over sugar and add maple syrup flavoring..stir until sugar is dissolved. If you make this in a 2 cup glass measuring cup, you can microwave it a little to help the sugar dissolve. I like this because it does not have high fructose corn syrup in it. It is kind of runny, but it is really good.

I often referred to them as the "Apple" of online shoes when telling my friends about the service. That is to say, like Apple, Zappos was much more than just a product or service company for me - it was a brand that I wanted to be associated with. Naturally, I've been very interested in how this acquisition plays out.
