A FEW months ago, Stephen Ironside, a student at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, confronted a minor but modern tragedy: the iPod that filled his life with song stopped working.

The device was out of warranty, and Apple would not fix it free. So he left it in a drawer until he happened to read a blog posting on CrunchGear.com that described how he might fix it — with a small, folded piece of paper. Mr. Ironside celebrated by posting thanks on the blog: “I’ve been on CDs for months. You saved my life (and my iPod).”

Some sites like macfixit.com, fixmyxp.com and macosxhints.com are devoted to a single product, while others like avsforum.com sponsor debates on a big product area, in this case home theaters, televisions and stereos. People with laptops that have suddenly gone blank can turn to www.notebookforums.com or notebookreview.com, and there are even a few sites like www.highdefforum.com for fixing TVs.

With predictable frequency, readers send me their ideas for new products, their gripes about existing products, their “why doesn’t someone make…?” brainstorms. I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with them, but I try to be as supportive as I can. (The really great ones, I feature in this blog.)

Today, for example, someone sent me a copy of a proposal that he had had a mutual friend deliver to Apple CEO Steve Jobs—a proposal for a new Apple product. “I expect no money for this,” he thoughtfully wrote in his cover letter to Mr. Jobs.

The proposal was that Apple should create a computer for seniors, which my correspondent feels is an underserved market.

That may be true. Maybe this idea is a goldmine waiting to be unearthed. But it seems unrealistic for my reader to feel crushed that Mr. Jobs didn’t embrace his idea.

First, because heaven knows how many similar “You know what you should do?” messages Apple (and Palm, and TiVo, and Microsoft, and Google…) must get a week.

Apple iTunes TV Pitch: Another Nail in Cable's Coffin

It's going to happen, the only question is when. The cable TV industry's monopolistic, anti-consumer practice of offering bloated, overpriced programming packages is coming mercifully to an end, brought down by a slew of more affordable options made possible by broadband Internet.

The most recent example: Today's report from All Things Digital's Peter Kafka, who says that Apple is pitching a monthly subscription service to the TV networks, an iTunes-based alternative to cable packages that would cost about $30 per month. Apple wants to launch the service early next year, provided it can get broadcast and cable TV programmers to sign up, Kafka reports.

Amen to anything that busts the trust of Cable people.

Drink's iPhone 'App' Gets Anger Flowing

Energy drinks are meant to be edgy and cool, and drunk by young men. So PepsiCo Inc. decided to release an Apple iPhone application for its Amp Energy drink to appeal to guys out on the prowl.

The app, released last Friday, purports to help men pick up any one of 24 types of women, such as the "sorority girl," "cougar," "rebound girl" or "punk rock girl." Users can choose the type of woman they have their eye on, then get coached on facts that might be useful, such as computing a carbon footprint to impress "the treehugger."

Now the snack and beverage giant is facing a storm of criticism for "Amp Up Before You Score."

Beck and his fellow band of hooligans have been telling scary stories about President Obama whom Limbaugh has disrespectfully referred to as "the little black man child." Beck recently accused the biracial President of having "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture." And he has attacked a number of key Administration officials accusing them of being socialist and anti-American. Limbaugh, who has a history of making racially charged remarks about Obama, has called the mixed-race president "a halfrican American." Days before the President's inauguration in January, Limbaugh said, "I hope he fails" - the verbal equivalent of putting a razor blade in a candy apple.

StoptheWitchHunt.org is just the beginning of a multi-media campaign to support a new resistance to these .

A new coalition was launched Thursday to specifically target conservatives Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, Pat Buchanan, and Paul Brown.

Called StopTheWitchHunt.org, their goal is "to give voice to the millions of Americans who believe it is time for talk-show hosts and elected officials to stop stoking the racial anxieties of the fringes of America."

They accuse the quintet of spewing "lies and hate speech...in a nationwide witch hunt" against President Obama.

They even call Limbaugh's "I hope he fails" remark "the verbal equivalent of putting a razor blade in a candy apple."

Their press release is even more hysterical, especially the misspelling of one of the objects of their disaffection:

Echo Justice, a coalition of national and local organizations launched a multi-media counter to the right-wing's echo chamber.

StopTheWitchHunt.org is a newly formed multimedia watch dog portal that will use social media and mobile communications

From a tree that can make you go blind to flowers that even kill unsuspecting honeybees, these 13 (more) poisonous plants are anything but innocent.

The Manchineel tree (Hippomane Mancinella) is so dangerous, it’s often marked with warning signs. Its leaves and small green fruit resemble those of an apple tree, hence the name – which is derived from “manzanilla”, meaning “little apple” in Spanish. But in Spain, this tree is more often known as “little apple of death”. All parts of this tree are so toxic that if you burn it and stand near the smoke, you can go blind.

Don't want Windows 7? Psystar makes it easy to install Mac OS X on any computer

If all the excitement about Windows 7 isn't floating your boat, you might be interested to see that notorious Mac cloners Psystar have released an app that makes it easy to run any OS - including Apple's OS X - on any machine.

Psystar's app, Rebel EFI, just needs to be burnt to a CD, and from there users can follow instructions to install the OS of their choice. No word yet on how this might play into Apple's lawsuit against Psystar for selling PC hardware with OS X preinstalled.

The full version is $49.99, but a working demo is available for free. The demo will apparently stick you with "limited hardware functionality," so it might be good to test it on a backup machine, and then buy the full version for your main PC.

Rinse apples under clear running water like you would any fruit. If organic, don't peel unless the recipe you have chosen requires peeled apples.

To prevent browning when slicing apples for a recipe, simply put the slices in a bowl of cold water to which a spoonful of lemon juice has been added.

For use in future recipes, sliced apples freeze well in plastic bags or containers.

clipper's remarks: Go to the source to see the inside of the apple. Use a melon baller to scoop out the seeds and core from the bottom. Fill that cavity with chocolate (or something else) and plug with a bit of scooped out apple. Then, dip in caramel and topping.

Basically, you take a melon baller and dig the middle out of the apple, setting aside the first, outside scoop. Then you fill the apple back up with the various stuffings and pop the apple bit that you set aside back in to plug the hole. Once you've dipped them in caramel, the plug is there to stay!
