Credit: Dreamstime

Scientists have discovered mystery snippets of mammal DNA
that have survived eons of evolution and yet have no apparent purpose. The
finding reveals just how much we don't know about the secrets hidden in our
genome and that of other animals.

Most genes change throughout evolution via mutations; useless
ones eventually get weeded out of the population while the helpful
modifications take hold. However, about 500 regions of our DNA — the body's
instruction code made up of base pairs of molecules — have apparently
remained intact throughout the history of mammalian evolution, or the past 80
million to 100 million years, basically free of mutations.

Mutations are introduced into these regions just as
they are everywhere else, but they're swept out of the genome much more quickly,

<clipSource>http://www.livescience.com/health/081009-mystery-dna.html</clipSource>

Lion Rides Horse

clipped by: deb2012
clipper's remarks: it just shocked my senses

Clip Source: kemo-d7.livejournal.com

<//O:P>

A lion rides a

that aging is a buildup of tissue damage similar to rust. The Stanford
findings suggest specific genetic
instructions drive the process. If they are right, science might one
day find ways of switching the signals off and halting or even
reversing aging.

“Everyone has assumed we age by rust,” Kim said. “But then how do you explain animals that don’t age?”

“A free radical doesn’t care if it’s in a human cell or a worm cell,” Kim said.

If aging is not a cost of unavoidable chemistry but is instead
driven by changes in regulatory genes, the aging process may not be
inevitable. It is at least theoretically possible to slow down or stop
developmental drift.

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/07/is-aging-an-acc.html</clipSource>

Organic food, better and tastier?

clipped by: balthazarus
clipper's remarks: "Produce from the organically and conventionally grown crops were then fed to animals over a two year period and intake and excretion of various minerals and trace elements were measured. The thought that others might be instead controlling our actions makes us uneasy. We rail against nanny states, we react badly to media hype and we are appalled at the idea of brainwashing. But words and images are not the only things that can affect our brains and thoughts. Other animals - parasites - can do this too. According to research by Kevin Lafferty from the University of California, Santa Barbara, a common brain parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, could be influencing human culture across the globe.
