Tiger Temple, or Wat Pha Luang Ta Bua, is a Buddhist temple in Western Thailand which keeps numerous animals, among them several tame tigers that walk around freely once a day and can be petted by tourists.

The Theravada Buddhist temple is located in the Saiyok district of Thailand's Kanchanaburi province, not far from the border with Myanmar, some 38 km north-west of Kanchanaburi along the 323 highway. It was founded in 1994 as a forest temple and sanctuary for numerous wild animals. In 1995 it received the Golden Jubilee Buddha Image, made of 80 kilograms of gold.

They are washed and handled by Thai staff and the younger tigers by the volunteers. Once a day they are led on leashes to a nearby quarry. Originally they would roam around freely in this area but now, with the increase in tourists and the amount of tigers who sit in the canyon, will always be chained.

Goat 'condoms' save Kenyan herds

Maasai herdsmen in Kenya have turned to an age-old contraceptive device, the "olor", to protect their precious goat herds from an ongoing drought.

The olor is made from cowhide or a square piece of plastic, and is tied around the belly of the male goat.

It prevents the bucks from mating with the female goats.

The herdsmen are using the device to limit the goat population and ensure there are not too many animals grazing on sparse vegetation.

"We don't want them to breed in this drought," says Mr Ole Ngoshoi Kipameto, a goat owner in Kajiado district.

The area, which is 80km (50 miles) from the capital, Nairobi, has received insufficient rainfall, making the landscape barren and forcing residents to move from place to place in search of pasture and water.

"We tie this hide under the belly of the buck for three months. After that we remove it and then they can breed by November when the short rains come," Mr Kipameto says.

Scientists have discovered mystery snippets of mammal DNA that have survived eons of evolution and yet have no apparent purpose. The finding reveals just how much we don't know about the secrets hidden in our genome and that of other animals.

Most genes change throughout evolution via mutations; useless ones eventually get weeded out of the population while the helpful modifications take hold. However, about 500 regions of our DNA — the body's instruction code made up of base pairs of molecules — have apparently remained intact throughout the history of mammalian evolution, or the past 80 million to 100 million years, basically free of mutations.

Mutations are introduced into these regions just as they are everywhere else, but they're swept out of the genome much more quickly,

Hundreds of animals, including the Tasmanian devil, have been added to the list of species threatened with extinction, according to the latest edition of the 'Red List' released today.

The Red List of Threatened Species, compiled by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and published in the journal Science says more than half of the world's mammals are falling in number, with Asian primates particularly at risk.

Overall, 38% of 44,838 species catalogued in the index are listed as "threatened" with extinction: a quarter of all mammals, one out of eight birds, one out of three amphibians and 70% of plants.

In Australia, 788 species appear on the threatened list, including fish, birds and plants. Of that number, 57 of the country's native mammals are at risk of extinction.

Professor Chris West, a zoologist from the University of Adelaide, says Australia's ranking in the red list is one of the worst for developed countries.

Fertile women raise their voice pitch

Women's voices rise and fall in tune with their fertility, according to research by psychologists.

Recordings of women taken at different times in their monthly cycle show that the female voice rises perceptibly a day or two before ovulation, when women are most likely to become pregnant.

The findings are the first to point to a link between voice and fertility and build on recent studies which support the idea that humans may be similar to other animals in displaying outward signs of fertility.

Two years ago, Haselton published another study into female fertility and the monthly cycle, which suggested that women "dressed to impress" when at their most fertile, favouring skirts over trousers and showing more skin.

The work goes against the long-held belief that humans, unlike many other animals, hide any evidence of ovulation.

Last year, scientists

claimed that women sway their hips more when they are at their most fertile.

When you LOL at silly pictures of cats with even sillier captions, Ben Huh laughs all the way to the bank.

Huh, a Seattle entrepreneur, has built a mini-empire on the unique brand of humor illustrated by the "LOLcats" craze: photos with captions punctuated by deliberately misspelled words and mangled phrases.

His network of eight Web sites, which includes I Can Has Cheezburger and I Can Has a Hot Dog, attracts 5 million users and 100 million page views a month.

Since buying I Can Has Cheezburger, Huh has added companion sites devoted to dogs, politics and really bad translations of English, among others. A fan favorite is Fail Blog, in which people take joy in others' mishaps.

When the company posts job openings, it receives a flood of résumés. The subject line of one cover letter read: "I can haz dream Job? My rezumez! Let me showz u thm."

"We want to make people happy for five minutes a day," he said.

Their discovery contradicts the prevailing theory that aging is a buildup of tissue damage similar to rust. The Stanford findings suggest specific genetic instructions drive the process. If they are right, science might one day find ways of switching the signals off and halting or even reversing aging.

“Everyone has assumed we age by rust,” Kim said. “But then how do you explain animals that don’t age?”

“A free radical doesn’t care if it’s in a human cell or a worm cell,” Kim said.

If aging is not a cost of unavoidable chemistry but is instead driven by changes in regulatory genes, the aging process may not be inevitable. It is at least theoretically possible to slow down or stop developmental drift.

We like to think that we are masters of our own fates. The thought that others might be instead controlling our actions makes us uneasy. We rail against nanny states, we react badly to media hype and we are appalled at the idea of brainwashing. But words and images are not the only things that can affect our brains and thoughts. Other animals - parasites - can do this too.
