"Jumper cables were clipped onto the ears of underperforming dogs, then, just like with a car, the cables were connected to the terminals of car batteries before lifting and tossing the shamed dogs into the water. We don't know how many suffered this premeditated murder, but the damage to the pool walls tells a story. It seems that while they were scrambling to escape, they scratched and clawed at the pool liner and bit at the dented aluminum sides like a hungry dog on a tin can.

the co-founder of Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pitbulls (BAD RAP), an East Bay organization with a national reputation for rescuing and rehabilitating pit bulls. They rehabbed and cared for many of the dogs seized from Vick's Bad Newz Kennels after his arrest in April of 2007.

It was a sweltering day in September of 2007, and Reynolds was in Virginia to evaluate the 49 pit bulls found alive on Vicks' property. A federal agent who had been at the scene when the property was searched was driving her to the various facilities holding the dogs, and they got to talking about what the investigation had turned up.

"The details that got to me then and stay with me today involve the swimming pool that was used to kill some of the dogs," Reynolds wrote on her blog.

Charges Dropped Against Cop Caught Having Sex With Cows

MOUNT HOLLY, NJ -- A former police officer accused of having a moonlight tryst with a group of cows will not be facing animal cruelty charges after all.

As it turns out bestiality is not a crime in New Jersey.

Former Moorestown police officer Robert Melia Jr. was charged last year with sexually assaulting three girls.

During the investigation, police say they found a video in the man's home that showed him sexually molesting cows.

According to prosecutors, Melia Jr. dropped his trousers and let the animals taste his genitals on a Southhampton farm in 2006.

Superior Court Judge ruled Wednesday that prosecutors failed to present sufficient evidence to jurors that proved that Melia's alleged actions in fact tormented the cows.

"I'm not saying it's okay," Judge Morley said in court after dismissing the charges.

"This is a legal question for me. It's not a question of morals."

Melia and former girlfriend Heather Lewis remain charged with molesting the three girls.

Crimes against wildlife, including badger baiting with dogs, hare coursing, poisoning of protected birds and even trapping them to sell as caged pets have soared to unprecedented heights. New figures from the police show that the number of wildlife crimes more than doubled in the last year, from 2,177 to 5,854.

Incidents are now being recorded at a rate of 120 a week. They cover not only the slaughtering of badgers and rare birds of prey, but also egg thefts, bird trapping, deer poaching and habitat destruction.

Northumbria a conspicuous target for wildlife criminals.

What make the statistics even more remarkable is that they do not include crimes against domestic and farm animals. In 2008, the RSPCA investigated 140,000 cases of animal cruelty in England and Wales, a steep rise from the 2003 figure of 105,000. The charity has seen dog fighting rise tenfold since 2004, with nearly 300 incidents last year.

There are only a few programs left that use live animals for their Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) courses and Baystate Medical Center in Massachusetts is one of them.

Baystate Medical Center is currently using pigs for its trauma sessions, which the hospital is justifying by claiming this is the best way to teach students.

This week the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine filed a complaint with the USDA, claiming that Baystate Medical Center is violating the Animal Welfare Act, which requires facilities to use alternatives when available.

According to PCRM, 90 percent of schools offering this program use non-animal models like the TraumaMan System (which Baystate owns!), Synman, and human cadavers for these courses. These alternatives have also been approved by the American College of Surgeons.

Send a letter to Baystate Medical Center asking them to use training alternatives that don’t involve animals for their ATLS courses.

She tires easily from her poor diet, pants with thirst in the oppressive heat, shakes with fear and exhaustion. Yet this bear cub dare not stop dancing, and she must do so again and again.

This story is typical of the plight of many bear cubs in India. Sadder still, over 50% of these beautiful little creatures do not even survive the journey to 'market'. They simply die in cages en route, from starvation, dehydration and trauma.

That's why these bears desperately need your support. WSPA is working with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to stop this barbaric practice. Our aim is to halt it at the source, and your help is vital in helping us stop this cruelty.

Poached from the wild and pining for her dead mother, this terrified bear cub's next experience is to be locked in a tiny metal cage. She is then transported long distances in baking heat to be sold on the black market. Not yet weaned, she yelps all the way with no water to quench her thirst.

Cramped, traumatised and utterly alone, this is only the beginning of her new life - she is sold to a Kalandar, and introduced to the torture of life as a dancing bear.

Constant, painful blows with a stick teach her to do exactly what she's told. She squeals in agony as her teeth are crudely removed, and her claws filed down. Again without anaesthetic, she is held down and a hole drilled in her sensitive muzzle so a coarse rope can be inserted and pulled at will to keep her in check. The pain for this poor bear is excruciating.

Bakery owner claims animal sacrifice part of religious observance

SAN ANTONIO -- Skins of animals and hooves nailed to a tree, those were just some of the bizarre things found right next to a bakery. When code-compliance officers arrived they noticed a number of things that didn't look right. That included around 15 animals in the back of the business.

When News 4 WOAI asked Jesse Mercado, the owner of Celia’s Bakery, about what was going on, he explained “this is part of the religion, you need to eat the animals, you need to eat it."

Mercado says the religion is called Yoruba, and it's similar to voodoo. When we were out there, he demonstrated some of the rituals that are part of his religion.

There had been complaints of animal abuse, drug activity, and prostitution. Code compliance found sick animals in the bakery next door, bad wiring throughout the building and a mattress in the vacant building on the end.

Mercado is not facing any charges for that. But he was arrested on animal cruelty charges. And for now the place has been shut down.

Man On Ride-Along Stomps Opossum To Death

DANVILLE, Va. -- A Virginia man on a police ride-along was found guilty of animal cruelty after he jumped out of the police car and stomped an opossum to death.

The Danville Register & Bee reported Tuesday that 23-year-old Evan Bryce Schuler saw the opossum run along a fence. A police officer testified that Schuler ran up to the fence, grabbed the links and "started stomping."

Schuler's lawyer, James Priest, said Schuler grew up on a farm where opossums killed his chickens and acted on instinct. Priest appealed the district court's ruling and the case will move to circuit court.

A Portland man who attacked his ex-girlfriend and impaled her pet fish this summer has been sentenced to two years probation, a psychological evaluation and community service. Donald Earl Fite III, 27, pleaded guilty Tuesday to animal abuse and domestic violence assault.

According to court records, Sarah Harris had broken up with Fite but returned to her Portland apartment July 25 to find him lying on her bed, saying he wanted to get back together.

When Harris tried to leave, Fite shoved her against a wall, grabbed her hair and tossed her against a bathtub.

Harris fled but returned with an officer to find her fish — a bright purple betta named "DeLorean" — on the wood floor with a knife through it.

According to court records, Fite quickly admitted killing the fish, telling police: "If she can't have me, then she can't have the fish."

"Donald bought the fish for me, and I'm sure he knew how much I cared for it," she said.

Running for Their Lives: End Greyhound Racing in Florida

Renowned for their speed and sleek looks, greyhounds have fallen prey to the widely unregulated racing industry. Fortunately, it appears to be a dying business thanks to increased public awareness about the inherent cruelty of the sport.

Every year thousands of dogs are injured and killed for nothing more than a profit. Even the fastest dogs may find themselves obsolete after only a few years of life. According to the Humane Society an estimated 7,500 to 20,000 greyhounds were euthanized merely because they couldn't run fast enough in 2003 alone.

Animal lovers and organizations including Grey2K USA, the Humane Society and the ASPCA are working to ban greyhound racing and to give these dogs a second chance.

In an internal memo issued this week, government officials in Canada urged Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz not to ban cat and dog fur imports, arguing that such a ban would weaken Canada's position against the banning of seal products by other countries.

This sentiment goes against the vast majority of Canadians who decry the annual seal hunt and the government's effort to protect the seal fur trade. A recent poll showed that 86 percent of Canadians supported the right of the EU to ban its trade in seal products, while 79 percent opposed the use of government money to defend the commercial seal hunt.*

What's more, a large number of the estimated 2 million dog and cat skins originate in China, where regulations are virtually nonexistent and animal suffering is beyond extreme. And because Canada has no labeling requirements for fur garments, it is nearly impossible for consumers to avoid the cruelty-ridden skins.
