The rubber-hand illusion involves placing a rubber hand in front of the participant in their field of vision and near to their real hand. The real hand is then concealed behind a partition. If the real hand and the rubber hand are touched or stroked in the same way and at the same time, the participant tries to co-ordinate what they are feeling (their own hand being stroked) and seeing (the rubber hand being stroked). They can experience a shift in where they believe their hand is to the position of the rubber hand.

‘People experience this weird illusion,’ says Dr G Lorimer Moseley of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford. ‘They will say things like, “I feel like I own the rubber hand”.’

Body ownership is a fundamental aspect of self-awareness – the feeling that your body belongs to you and is constantly there.

A stunning new description of how the human body and brain communicate to produce emotional states -- including our feelings, cravings, and moods -- has all the elements needed to explain how the human brain might give rise to spiritual experiences, without the necessary involvement of a supernatural presence, according to Dr. Martin Paulus, a psychiatrist at the University of California in San Diego who is also a Zen practitioner.

What makes Michael Phelps so good?

Now that Michael Phelps has won an unmatched eight gold medals in this year's Olympic Games, lots of journalists are asking what gives Phelps such a leg up on the competition (legally, of course, though allegations of doping have tainted other Beijing Olympians). Beyond Phelps’ drive to succeed, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Company, and his undoubtedly good training, could it be that a good bit of his (as well as many athletes’) talent just boils down to simple anatomy?

There's his proportionally longer “wingspan,” as described by the Toronto Sun newspaper. Phelps’s arms extend 80 inches (203 centimeters) tip to tip, and his body measures in at 76 inches (193 centimeters) in height.

Phelps is also said to be double-jointed, according to a Detroit News blog. His size-14 feet reportedly bend 15 degrees farther

The Medieval News blog printed a press release in relation to Oxford University's Bodleian Library and the institutional subscription site, ARTstor (announcement), whereby some 24,000 manuscript images are being made available to subscribers.

Additionally, a proportion of these images is accessible by the general public. While I was actively looking through this very impressive collection, the number of images available actually increased from 7,500 to over 8000.

I have so far only scanned through about 2000 of these

selection is a fair cross section of the types of material available. Perhaps 15% of the images concentrate on initials and margin motifs. There are Book of Hours, bestiaries, alphabet forms and calligraphy, astronomy and astrology, medical anatomy/botany, building drawings, miniatures and the very occasional binding

An Israeli website aims to reach Arab hearts and minds by targeting a different part of the anatomy.

This may not be as wacky as it sounds. Author Salman Rushdie, in his 2004 essay "The East is Blue," pointed out that even though pornography is ruthlessly suppressed in many Muslim countries, it is still ubiquitous. What's more, it can have political ramifications. "Pornography exists everywhere, of course, but when it comes into societies in which it's difficult for young men and women to get together and do what young men and women often like doing, it satisfies a more general need; and, while doing so, it sometimes becomes a kind of standard-bearer for freedom, even for civilization," Rushdie wrote.

Expecting Arab men to be swayed by Ratuv's political content might be a little like expecting American men to read the articles in Playboy

Eye shaped camera

Inspired by the human anatomy, researchers in the United States have created the world's first curved electronic "eye" camera, according to a study released Wednesday.

The size and shape of a human eye, the device weaves a network of silicon detectors into a flexible mesh, and could usher in a new generation of distortion-free digital and video cameras.

Experiments already under way are testing other potential applications, including a thin, pliable monitor to detect electrical signals travelling across the undulating surface of the human brain.

Its breakthrough design also points the way to the development of artificial electronic retinas that could one day help restore sight, says the study, published in the British journal Nature.

Engineers have been trying for decades to manufacture an electronic eye system, but the goal of creating a working camera remained elusive.

A 19th-century painter, Van Gogh is almost as famous for his mental instability as for his vivid paintings. His career as an artist lasted only 10 years and coincided with frequent bouts of depression and anguish

Among his favorite painters at this time were Jean François Millet, Rembrandt, Honoré Daumier; among his favorite authors, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, and Harriet Beecher Stowe - all of them interested in the poor and dispossessed. Complementing Van Gogh's dismal subject matter of this time were his colors, dark brownish and greenish tones. The masterpiece of the Dutch period is the Potato Eaters (1885), a night scene in which peasants sit at their meal around a table.

Born on March 30, 1853, at Groot-Zundert in the province of Brabant, Vincent Van Gogh was the son of a Protestant minister.

In early 1877 he clerked in a bookshop in Dordrecht

He left 3 months later to become an evangelist in a poor mining section of Belgium

After much introspection, Van Gogh decided in 1880 to devote his life to art, a profession he accepted as a spiritual calling.

In October 1880 he attended an art school in Brussels, where he studied the rudiments of perspective and anatomy. From April to December 1881 he stayed with his parents, who were then in Etten, and continued to work at his art. At this time his cousin from Amsterdam, a widow with a 4-year-old son, rejected him, and he subsequently formed a close relationship with a pregnant prostitute, a move that precipitated a break with his family.

During his Dutch period (1880-1886) Van Gogh executed works in which his overriding humanitarian concerns were overtly manifest.

Unique fossil discovery shows Antarctic was once much warmer

A new fossil discovery- the first of its kind from the whole of the Antarctic continent- provides scientists with new evidence to support the theory that the polar region was once much warmer.

The team made a new fossil discovery in the Dry Valleys of the East Antarctic region. The fossils (ostracods) come from an ancient lake - 14 million years old - and are exceptionally well preserved, with all of their soft anatomy in 3-dimensions.

Dr Mark Williams from the Department of Geology at the University of Leicester said: "This is a rare occurrence in the fossil record - but is the first of its kind from the whole of the Antarctic continent.
