Surveillance system will be monitored by ordinary citizens, raising concerns

LANCASTER, Pa. - Horses drawing buggies regularly clop down the roads approaching Lancaster, a peaceful city in the heart of Amish country that had only three murders last year and relatively low crime.

But if the community sounds reminiscent of the past, it also has some distinctly modern technology: 165 surveillance cameras that will keep watch over thousands of residents around the clock.

When it is complete, the surveillance system will be bigger than those in large cities such as Philadelphia, San Francisco and Boston. And the fact that it will be monitored by ordinary citizens has raised privacy concerns.

"I live the Amish life -- I don't need to read about it," said Mrs. Smoker, who is the sister of store owner Rachel Esh. From what her friends tell her, she added, the books "aren't quite true to life."

While there are no religious strictures against contemporary novels, the church has traditionally viewed fiction as distracting and deceitful, says Donald Kraybill, a senior fellow at the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, a religious studies center at Elizabethtown College.

Some Amish have nevertheless become avid fans. An Amish woman in Lancaster told Ms. Lewis that "all the women in our church district are reading your books under the covers, literally," Ms. Lewis said. Ms. Brunstetter, who lives in Tacoma, Wash., said several Amish families

NEWBURG, Pa. -- Rachel Esh, owner of an Amish dry-goods store here, was giddy as customers kept arriving. Cars spilled out of the dirt parking lot onto the hay and potato fields, crushing a few of her neighbor's potatoes.

She ushered the crowd of 40 people swarming in front of her cash register into a line that snaked out the door of Rachel's Country Store. The cause of the commotion: novelist Cindy Woodsmall, who had stopped by to autograph books.

The plot of 'When the Heart Cries,' revolves around Hannah, a young Amish woman who falls in love with a Mennonite and hides her plans to marry him from her strict parents. The lovers kiss a couple of times in 326 pages.

Most bonnet books are G-rated romances, often involving an Amish character who falls for an outsider.

Publishers attribute the books' popularity to their pastoral settings and forbidden love scenarios à la Romeo and Juliet.

Lately, the genre has expanded to include Amish thrillers and murder mysteries.

As Americans struggle through a dismal recession, many are trying to safeguard themselves from what they fear will be even worse times ahead. They eat out less often. They take vacations closer to home. They put off buying new cars.

And some raise chickens. Lloyd Romriell, a married father of four in Annis, Idaho, recently received seven grown chickens and a coop from a relative. The hens lay a total of about two dozen eggs a week.

“It’s because times are tough. You never know what’s going to happen,” Mr. Romriell said. Although he manages a feed store, he had not kept chickens since he was a child. “If you lose your job tomorrow, you’ve still got food.”

Like most home gardeners, I was first introduced to heirloom vegetables through tomatoes. The Amish Brandywine couldn’t be beat, I was told, and my pulse quickened at the thought of plump, misshapen beauties all summer long. I’ve grown a number of heirloom tomatoes and found some of them fickle. Some are more subject to disease, take forever to ripen and offer up a scant harvest. What I overlooked are the heirloom tomatoes that thrive in my garden given the soil, summer temperatures and dates to maturity.

A few months after the accident, the driver wrote a letter asking for forgiveness, but Payne, who was 22, could not face that yet.

"I thought, 'How dare he contact me,' and I put it in a pile and forgot about it," Payne recalled one day recently, sitting in the garden of her Mill Valley home. "I was so angry that I pretended he didn't exist. I was going to play out the punishment by not responding."

It would take time to realize what she needed. Instead of a letter, she would write the driver a book about forgiveness.

"Kingdom of Simplicity" is the story of Eli Yoder, a young Amish man who survives an accident that kills his five sisters. His anger at the driver - whose identity he learns only toward the end of the book - and his guilt at surviving lead him on a painful journey during his rumspringa, the period when Amish teens are allowed to experience the outside "English" world before formally joining the Amish faith. Eli can embrace it only when he learns to forgive.

Amish Pot Roast

3-4 lb. beef roast (sirloin tip, rump, English cut)
1 tbsp. oil
1/4 c. soy sauce
1 c. coffee
2 bay leaves
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 tsp. oregano

2 onions, sliced

Sear roast in 1 tablespoon oil on all sides in heavy Dutch oven. Pour sauce over meat. Put half of onions on meat, the other half in sauce. Cover and roast 4-5 hours at 325 degrees.

FOR generations, vacationers in Maine and visitors to Pennsylvania’s Amish country have found a simple black and white snack in restaurants and convenience shops and on nearly every gas station counter: whoopie pies.

But in most of the United States, people could be forgiven for not knowing that the whoopie pie is not, in fact, a pie at all. (It is sometimes described as a cookie, but that is not quite right, either. The closest description may be a cake-like sandwich, or perhaps a sandwich-like cake.)

But the snacks evoke a more homespun era that seems to provide some comfort amid the economic gloom. “Pure edible nostalgia,”

Food historians believe whoopie pies originated in Pennsylvania, where they were baked by Amish women and put in farmers’ lunchboxes.

Tired from a morning’s work, the farmers purportedly would shout “Whoopie!” if they discovered one of the desserts in their lunch pails, Ms. Emberling said.
