The defining aspect of the Reagan Revolution was not that so called conservatives would place the economy at risk with radical experiments, but that they would completely ignore the results.

Ronald Reagan and his revolution have a substantial legacy. We have already fought three wars against two of his allies: Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden.

Maybe all this is Ronald Reagan’s fault. Or perhaps he was nothing more than the standard bearer for the most self indulgent generation of Americans to ever trod the planet. A generation that was perfectly happy with the politics of Prozac. A generation that just wanted to feel good and be assured that greatness was an American birthright that never needed to be questioned.

Reagan is so revered that few are willing to question his legacy. But there is no better time to revisit the history of Ronald Reagan than the beginning of the 21st century, as we begin to suffer the full consequences of his policies and the revolution that bears his name.

Millions of women might not be aware of the effects that antidepressant medication can have on their unborn child.

Several studies have reported birth defects such as malformed hearts and small birth weight in babies that were delivered to women who took SSRIs antidepressants (Prozac and Seroxat) in the early stages of pregnancy.

Apparently doctors have been advised not to prescribe antidepressants to women of child bearing age without first outlining the health risks to the unborn.

The overall national rates of birth defects have been reported to have dramatically risen from 1% – 2% . The general rate for miscarriage is 8% , in comparison to 16% of women that miscarry when taking Seroxat.

Have you heard of the humble soil microbe Mycobacterium vaccae? It was first found by scientists in a pile of cow dung. Perhaps they thought they were 'civilising' it, elevating it above the depravity and ignorance of its fecal home when they taught it the ways of the petri dish? But was M. vaccae fazed or enbitterered by their neo-missionary condescension? Not if it's subsequent behaviour is anything to go by. When the scientists injected it into various rodents they found it released serotonin in the brain -- the very same chemical boosted by anti-depressant pharmaceuticals. Subsequent research has shown that it gives humans a happy buzz too.

Lexapro had $2.3 billion in sales in 2008 even though generic versions of Celexa and every other drug in the class sell for a fraction of Lexapro’s price. For example, a month’s supply of 5-milligram tablets of Lexapro costs $87.99 at drugstore.com, compared to $14.99 for a month’s supply of a generic version of Prozac. Forest has recently been raising the price of Lexapro to make up for a decline in its use…

It is impossible to unpack all of the reasons for these prescriptions, but some industry critics say one reason could be the money doctors make from Forest. Psychiatrists make more money from drug makers than any other medical specialty, according to analyses of payment data. And Forest gives more money and food to doctors than many of its far larger rivals… Forest’s payments to doctors in 2008 were surpassed only by those of Eli Lilly, Pfizer, Novartis and Merck — companies with annual sales that are five to 10 times larger than Forest’s.

The pharmaceutical industry has developed thousands of medicines that have saved millions of lives, but it has also used its marketing muscle to successfully peddle expensive pills that are no more effective than older drugs sold at a fraction of the cost.
No drug better demonstrates the industry’s salesmanship than Lexapro, an antidepressant sold by Forest Laboratories.
“Lexapro Fiscal 2004 Marketing Plan,” is an outline of the many steps Forest used to make Lexapro a success
quietly made public recently by the Senate’s Special Committee on Aging demonstrates just how Forest managed to turn a medicinal afterthought into a best seller.
Because of concerns from Forest, the Senate committee released only 88 pages
But those 88 pages make clear that one of the principal means by which Forest hoped to persuade psychiatrists, primary care doctors and other medical specialists to prescribe Lexapro was by finding many ways to put money into doctors’ pockets and food into their mouths.

Clinical studies performed on Prozac show 191 negative side effects per 100 people. This equates to almost two negative side effects for every user of the drug.

The FDA continues to ignore the Prozac body count (they approved Prozac’s use for children in 2003). To make matters worse, the FDA granted its manufacturer, Eli Lilly, extended patent protection. In order to procure thirty additional months of earning power, Eli Lilly changed the name of Prozac to Sarafem, while at the same time labeling common personality and biological shifts as a disease among women; this “disease” being premenstrual irritability. As a result, thousands of unsuspecting women were given Prozac for premenstrual irritability while at the same time increasing their chances of suffering from the aforementioned negative side effects such as aggression, and suicide.

About 6 percent of people were prescribed an antidepressant in 1996 -- 13 million people. This rose to more than 10 percent or 27 million people by 2005, the researchers found.

"Not only are more U.S. residents being treated with antidepressants, but also those who are being treated are receiving more antidepressant prescriptions," they added.

More than 164 million prescriptions were written in 2008 for antidepressants, totaling $9.6 billion in U.S. sales, according to IMS Health.

Drugs that affect the brain chemical serotonin like GlaxoSmithKline's <GSK.L> Paxil, known generically as paroxetine, and Eli Lilly and Co's <LLY.N> Prozac, known generically as fluoxetine, are the most commonly prescribed class of antidepressant. But the study found the effect in all classes of the drugs.

Pharmaceutical companies would have us believe that depression and anxiety disorders cannot possibly be lifted if we don't address the underlying neurochemical imbalance with medication. Yet increasing evidence indicate that receiving counseling and therapy brings about similar changes in the brain that are associated with improved mood and functioning.

I'm really excited about findings like this. To be sure, I'm not advocating that we do away with medication altogether. Medcation may indeed be necessary to treat psychotic symptoms or severe depression. But I am hopeful this and other studies will get us to think twice before we reach out for that bottle of Adderrall or Concerta for ourselves or our kids.

The Biology of Psychotherapy

growing evidence from brain imaging research suggests that the form of therapy known as cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, produces changes in the brain similar to those produced by medications when they work.

Cognitive behavioral therapy emphasizes the role our thoughts play in how we feel.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by anxiety-laden intrusive thoughts and accompanying repetitive behaviors that are meant to reduce the anxiety.

In a study that compared CBT to Prozac, researchers used a brain-scanning technique called positron emission tomography to measure the rate of glucose metabolism in the OCD brain after Prozac treatment alone and after therapy treatment alone. The results were essentially identical: both interventions decreased the rate of glucose metabolism to levels seen in healthy people without OCD, and the rate of the decrease seemed proportional to the degree of improvement in their OCD symptoms.

Many of the writings talk about a whole new route to finding meaning in life, not only for clients, but for psychologists rebelling against the predominant practice of “sending traumatized people back into psychologically lethal workplaces,” prescribing Prozac, or facilitating “six sessions of cognitive therapy.” The “grief, shame, emptiness, and fear” Buzzell often sees in her clients may be, she believes, “a natural response to the unnatural way we live.”
