The federal justice minister is considering a new law that would allow police to conduct random breathalyzer tests on drivers, regardless of whether they suspect motorists have been drinking.

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson raised the prospect recently at a meeting of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, according to MADD chief executive Andrew Murie.

TACOMA, Wash. -- A prominent drunk driving attorney got into a drunk driving injury crash only to have the vehicular assault charge dropped. That angered Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

DUI defense attorney Janiece Lacross now finds herself on the other side of the law. Last November she drove drunk with her three young children in the backseat. She hit a boy on his bike in Kitsap County, breaking his leg and sending him into the bushes.

But the vehicular assault charge against her was dropped and reduced to just a DUI, which brought Mothers Against Drunk Driving to court to find out why.

That was the way the proceeding started, with MADD being really mad.

MADD learned that Lacross voluntarily went into in-patient alcohol treatment and she even helped the young victim, Joseph Griffith, with his civil suit for personal injuries. The vehicular assault charge was dropped at the victim's request.

MADD is not so mad anymore.

Lacross pleaded guilty to DUI and three counts of reckless endangerment.

College presidents seek drinking age debate

They are calling on lawmakers to consider moving age back to 18

RALEIGH, North Carolina - College presidents from about 100 of the best-known U.S. universities, including Duke, Dartmouth and Ohio State, are calling on lawmakers to consider lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18, saying current laws actually encourage dangerous binge drinking on campus.

Other prominent schools in the group include Syracuse, Tufts, Colgate, Kenyon and Morehouse.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving says lowering the drinking age would lead to more fatal car crashes. It accuses the presidents of misrepresenting science and looking for an easy way out of an inconvenient problem. MADD officials are even urging parents to think carefully about the safety of colleges whose presidents have signed on.

Research has found more than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependence.

Today, Colorado once again leads the nation in its attitude toward alcohol--but now, the mandate seems to be "drink till you drop." In our second ranking of urban inebriation, Aurora comes in 82nd, Colorado Springs finishes 98th, and, once again, Denver is Most Dangerously Drunk.

We looked at annual death rates due to alcoholic liver disease, as well as who's headed there by regularly downing five or more drinks in a sitting (CDC). Next, we factored in drunk-driving arrests (FBI) and the percentage of fatal accidents involving intoxicated motorists (U.S. Department of Transportation). Then, after tallying the MADD report card of state efforts to cut down on excessive drinking, we had our ranking and, for the state of Colorado, an invitation to AA.

Increasing pressure is being exerted on drunk driving legislators by organizations such as MADD. More confirmation exists that most, if not all, alcohol-related highway fatalities can be prevented.

Moreover, junior high, high school, and college administrators are cracking down harder on student alcohol abuse. And finally, there are increasing efforts to reduce preventable alcohol-related accidents and injuries in the workplace. Due to all of these influences, alcohol test information will certainly become even more important and implemented in our society.

TAMPA - Daniel Brock won high praise for jailing impaired motorists. Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored him. So did his bosses.

But one of Hillsborough County's most aggressive DUI deputies may have wrongly sent dozens of people to jail, the Sheriff's Office acknowledged Thursday.

In one year, Brock arrested 58 people whose blood-alcohol content was below 0.08, the level at which state law presumes a driver is impaired, an internal affairs audit showed.

"I don't prescribe to the theory that somehow you have to be 0.08 to be drunk or impaired, " Brock, 38, told investigators.

In 43 of those 58 cases, motorists demonstrated no visible impairment behind the wheel, according to an internal affairs report made public Thursday. In 41 arrests, Brock also failed to make a case with urine samples, the report states.

He said drivers incorrectly recited the alphabet, used arms for balance and slurred speech - when the video showed correct alphabets, perfect balance and clear speech.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- A city police officer who recently received an award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving has been charged with drunken driving, authorities said

after a motorist reported that he had forced two vehicles off the road, the arresting officer's report said. Beebe failed a field sobriety test and agreed to a chemical test.

It seems just about everyone in Hollywood wants to save the world these days.

Celebrities are looking for charities to represent, and charities are looking for celebrities to represent them. But is it really worth it to have a star supporting your cause when you're forced to deal with the diva demands, paparazzi penetration and personal problems that often accompany a famous face?

For example, Mothers Against Drunk Driving had every reason to be hopping MADD late last year when their spokesgirl, Miss Teen USA Katie Blair, was caught carousing with her sash sister, former Miss USA Tara Conner, and drinking while underage in New York nightclubs.

Paris Hilton, meanwhile, reportedly promised to give $250,000 to an Australian charity, Paradise Kids, and to organize a fundraising concert in support of seriously ill youngsters.

But that was over two years ago, and the Hilton heiress hasn’t been back in contact with the organization.

A Cincinnati police officer was jailed Thursday morning, charged with driving while intoxicated.

Charles Bebee, 53, was arrested in Aurora, Ind., around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A police report stated that an officer spotted a sport utility vehicle moving at a high rate of speed, then a car behind the SUV stopped to tell the officer that the driver of the SUV was going to cause an accident.

The officer followed the SUV for some time before pulling it over for doing 55 in a 35 mph zone.

The report said the officer gave a field sobriety test to Bebee, who failed it. The report said Bebee consented to a chemical test, where his blood-alcohol level was determined to be .08 percent.

Police said that Bebee was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher.
