'Bodybuilding Firefighter' False Disability Claim

A Boston firefighter who participated in a bodybuilding contest last year after claiming he was permanently disabled has been charged with fraud in connection with his application for an accidental disability pension.

The U.S. Attorney's office announced Wednesday that Albert Arroyo was indicted on a mail fraud charge. The 47-year-old fire prevention inspector said he was disabled after slipping on a staircase.

A second former Boston firefighter, 65-year-old James Famolare, was also accused of seeking a fraudulent disability pension.

A fire department clerk, 31-year-old Erika Boylan, faces charges of perjury and obstruction of a grand jury investigation. She is on paid leave.

Fire Commissioner Rod Fraser said he welcomed the federal action and has cooperated in the investigation.

Attorneys for Arroyo did not immediately return calls. It's not known if Boylan and Famolare have lawyers.

Chester, Pa., firefighter James Krapf wants to know what's wrong with Old Glory. The 11-year veteran was suspended without pay Thursday after he refused to peel a sticker of the American flag from his locker.

"It's pride…it's a matter of pride," Krapf said.

A new department rule mandates that all stickers and statements – union, cartoon and political – be stripped from lockers

But Krapf figured the red, white and blue was safe.

"The chief came out and said 'You have to remove your stickers,' I said 'No disrespect chief, but I'm not taking the flag off,'" Krapf recounted. He says the officer then asked him to leave.

Fire Commissioner James Johnson, who served in the Marine Corps, vows the symbolism of the decal is not the issue.

"We wear the American flag on our uniform…it's flying outside that station," he said.

But Krapf refuses to give up and he's not alone. The firefighters union plans to negotiate with the department on the issue.

They can't just roll the pipes off because its likely there will be so much debris in a real disaster that rolling will be impossible. Instead they inflate rubber and kevlar bags, sort of ultra-balloons. The bags are attached to an air tank and when inflated, can support a huge amount of weight ranging from two tons with the smaller bag to a mammoth 37 tons using the large bag!

It takes about ten minutes to free the 'grateful' dummy.

The collaborative training provided by Novato Fire District, Marin USAR and the State of California Office of Emergency Services, mirrors the collaboration in the field. When disaster strikes, multiple agencies respond and they need to work seamlessly together. That's why this type of training is so important.

Loma Prieta shook the Bay Area nearly to its knees twenty years ago, this weekend.

Most of us hope to avoid major disaster, but earthquakes, fires and floods are what the Urban Search and Rescue Teams flock to.

The Marin Urban Search and Rescue Team or USAR, is made up of nearly fifty members from about twenty local organization. They are individuals specializing in saving lives under the most difficult circumstances-- rescues in water; near hazardous materials; within massive structure collapse and in very confined spaces.

Last week, we got a chance to see a training session, in preparation for Saturday's 20th Anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake.

But search and rescue training isn't limited to quake disasters.

Three 9/11 Heroes Die of Cancer in 5 Days

The act is named after a New York City Police Department detective who died from his post-9/11 ailments.

“Unfortunately, it’s just going to happen more and more…I hope next week there isn’t four,” regretted Stephen Grossman.

To better illustrate the pattern, the newspaper noted that firefighter John McNamara, also 44, had died of cancer last month.

“These three deaths are proof that we need this bill passed today $#0151; not a year from now,” said John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation.

“How do you get this high cluster of serious cancer in just people that worked the pile?” he said. “That isn’t a coincidence.”

A firefighter and two cops who worked at Ground Zero in the days and weeks after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, have died of cancer in a five-day period, a report says.

A startling report by the New York Daily News highlights the cancer-related deaths of the firefighter and two cops.

Family members and advocates blame the terminal illnesses on toxins released into the air after the twin towers collapsed.

“Everybody is denying that this stuff is connected to 9/11, but it is,” the daily quoted Stephen Grossman, whose son Robert, a police officer in Harlem who worked at Ground Zero for several weeks after September 11, died of cancer last Friday at the age of 44.

Firefighter Richard Mannetta, 44, and Police Officer Cory Diaz, 37, both passed away from cancer the following Saturday and Wednesday.

The deaths could reignite anger over delay and refusal in Congress in passing a bill that would help pay for the medical care of survivors and aid workers.

Good Samaritan Rescues Boy, 4, From New York City Fire

Horia Cretan was in his store in the Bronx when he heard "desperate screams" from a little boy next door, he told "FOX & Friends" Thursday.

Click here for dramatic video of the fire rescue.

A firefighter handed him the limp, unconscious 4-year-old. Using a curtain as a shield from falling debris, Cretan carried the boy to safety.

"When I took him, he wasn’t breathing," Cretan said. "His head fell back and I got scared. ... Then he opened his eyes and it was beautiful."

Cretan says he resuscitated the child by giving him CPR, which he learned by watching TV.

Thomas Richard Kelly

a New York City firefighter who lost his life at the World Trade Center. He was last seen going into the South Tower; a short time later it collapsed.

Tommy Kelly, as he was known, lived in Riverhead, New York. Born February 13, 1963, he was the son of Emmett and Sue Kelly.

Tommy was a a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department assigned to Ladder 105.

The Grateful Dead and the New York Mets were two of his passions. He was an avid bike rider and scuba diver.

Reading comments written by family, friends and co-workers, in various online tributes, it's clear that he made the most of his 38 years.

It's touching to read the entries in his Legacy. come Guest Book.

Joan Petrere wrote, "I think of you every day, Tommy and miss you very much. I remember all our fun and family parties. We all miss you greatly. It's not fair this happend to you. We know that you are with Kathleen.

Loaded with a mysterious, unnamed glowing substance (one can only assume hordes of ground-up lightning bugs), the shoes leave a simple footprint trail that can be tracked in case of sudden panic. (We're assuming this goop would be more sticky than slippery, though honestly, neither scenario sounds fantastic.)

Maybe these boots would help firefighters, and maybe they wouldn't (firefighters in the audience, please share your thoughts). But as some sort of child's toy involving special goggles, Nerf darts and booby traps, the glow boots sound like a lot of fun...especially if you can buy em in an men's size 12 and the liquid permanently stains carpets. No one suffered life-threatening injuries in the attack that lasted about an hour, reports said.

The 4-foot bear first attacked people at a bus parking lot then entered a lodge where it was trapped in a souvenir shop and shot dead by a hunter, according to media reports.

A photograph from the scene showed the bear mauling a prone person in a parking lot while a man attempted to scare it off.

The rest stop is on a mountainous road that is open during summer months only to licensed buses and taxis. The area is frequented by tourists for its scenic views.

Akano said bear attacks are very rare in the area.

Among the hidden costs of the health care crisis is the burden that fire departments across the country are facing as firefighters, much like emergency room doctors, are increasingly serving as primary care providers.

About 80 percent of the calls handled by Engine Company 10 are medical emergencies because the firehouse serves one of the city’s poorest areas, where few residents have health insurance, doctors’ checkups are rare, and medical problems are left to fester until someone dials 911.
