Big Farting Bull In Little China

Beijing’s burgeoning art district has a new symbol for its growing influence in the global art world -a giant farting bull.

Created by sculptor Chen Wenling, the 20-foot statue depicts, well, a big fiberglass bull that rams a devil figure with its horns while making whoopie so hard the devil crashes into a wall.

They had decided to 'seed' clouds with chemicals to produce rain and ease a drought in Beijing.

The operation went exactly as they had hoped - except that temperatures dropped sharply and the precipitation fell as snow.

It kept going for half the day, blanketing the capital's streets and hitting air and road travel. It was the earliest snow in Beijing for ten years.

It was helped by temperatures as low as -2C (29 Fahrenheit) and strong winds from the north, Xinhua news agency reported.

'We won't miss any opportunity of artificial precipitation since Beijing is suffering from the lingering drought,' the report quoted Zhang Qiang, head of the Beijing Weather Modification Office, as saying at the end of last week.

Chinese meteorologists have for years been honing the technique of making rain by injecting special chemicals into clouds.

Although the technique often gets results, a drought in the north of the country has continued for over a decade.

The Prime Minister is now actively campaigning for Mr Blair to get the post.

Number 10 believes that Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, will add her support to the move if she is allowed to choose a German for the other new role created by the Lisbon Treaty, the high representative for foreign affairs.

David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, has been at the forefront of a change of policy regarding Mr Blair’s ambitions this week. He has begun to lobby hard for his appointment with a series of statements urging EU leaders to grasp the nettle and allow the big figure like Mr Blair who could “stop the traffic” in Washington and Beijing, to take on the role.

That intervention was mocked by David Cameron yesterday who said Europe should be looking at politicians who can get the traffic moving, not stopped.

Mr Cameron said he was squarely against the role of president. However he said if there had to be one it should not be “El Presidente Blair.”

N. Korea calls for direct talks with U.S.+

North Korea on Monday repeated its call for direct talks with the United States, saying that if the two countries end their mutual hostility and forge trust, progress could be made toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

A few days before the start of this year's Melbourne International Film Festival its executive director received an "audacious" telephone call.

An official from China's consulate in the city called him to "urge" the festival to withdraw a film about the Chinese activist Rebiya Kadeer.

Beijing then tried to persuade the organisers of the Frankfurt Book Fair not to allow two Chinese writers to attend an event.

China says it does not interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.

But some see these acts as an attempt by China to use abroad the tough censorship measures it constantly employs at home.

Intimidation and threats

Richard Moore, the Melbourne festival's executive director, said he was astonished to receive the call from the city's Chinese consulate.

The festival decided to ignore the advice and go ahead with the film - about an activist who campaigns for better rights for China's Uighur minority - but that did not end the issue.

Acid ship 'sinks in China's Yangtze'

BEIJING (AFP) - – A ship carrying 100 tonnes of hydrochloric acid sank in China's Yangtze river on Sunday after colliding with another vessel, state media reported, citing local officials.

The collision happened during strong winds in central Hubei province, Xinhua news agency said, adding that efforts were under way to retrieve the highly corrosive cargo.

The report did not say if the acid was contained on the sunken ship or had leeched into the water.

However, it cited officials from the Hubei Provincial Environmental Protection Department as saying tests on the water revealed a pH of betwen 7.5 and 8.0, which it said was within the normal range.

Industrial accidents are not uncommon in China, where an emphasis on economic growth has lead to widespread disregard for standards.

Police in China say they have recovered more than 2,000 children in a six-month campaign against human trafficking.

The ministry of public security has set up a website with pictures of some of those kidnapped, in the hope of returning them to their families.

The ministry website has pictures of 60 children, ranging from babies to young adults, who were kidnapped from their families.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of children go missing in China each year.

In China's patriarchal society, baby boys are especially prized, sometimes selling for as much as $6,000 (£3,670), says the BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Beijing.

Girls are sometimes sold for just $500 (£305), he says.

Human trafficking is seen as a growing problem in China. Some families buy trafficked women or children to use as extra labour or household servants.

There have been several high-profile cases of abducted children being rescued from mines and brick kilns.
