ScienceDaily (May 25, 2009) — Researchers at the University of Toronto and the University Health Network's Centre for Innovation in Complex Care (CICC) have found that a wide array of health-related activity occurs in the 3 dimensional virtual world of Second Life. Second Life is free for users with basic accounts, and reported over 16 million registered users worldwide in 2008.

The web-based platform, which is often associated with pornography and "cheating" spouses, is also used to educate people about illness, train physicians, nurses and medical students with virtual simulations, enable disease-specific support and discussion groups, fundraise real-life dollars for medical research, and to conduct research.

Product Review: Second Skies Teleport System

While putting the finishing touches on a club and mall my group, CleoRaven is opening soon, I spent about four hours trying different teleporters.

Frustrated, I consulted a group that has been far too good to me in Second Life: the Happy Hippsters.

I followed her landmark to Second Skies: Airships, Airplanes & More. They sell all kinds of flying items, apparently.

I can summarize the entire set-up for you here:

1. Rez one of the 3 included Teleport pads

2 Open EDIT and rename it in the General tab.

3. Change textures, size etc if you wish

4 Close Build and click the pad to activate it.

5. Repeat.

Click...ZOOM!!!

Another outstanding feature of the Second Skies teleporter is its ability to communicate with pads owned by different people.

Second Skies Teleporter is a steal

Its so wonderfully simple a two-hour old newbie could do this.

“In the second half of the year, Linden Lab will also add the ability for residents of Second Life to morph their voices. They can disguise their voices or make them sound comical. Users can make their voices sound like a “French woman” or a “sports announcer” among other voices.

“Kingdon said Second Life residents will be able to receive real world calls in the virtual world in a service dubbed AvaLine. The company’s Dial an Avatar function assigns residents of Second Life a phone number that enables friends to call from a landline, cell phone, or VOIP application. The service is available as a beta test today and will launch formally by the end of the second quarter.”

Getting by in Second Life can be as easy and as hard as getting by in RL. Your avatar may have rent, clothes, hair, shoes, creature comforts and of course, a social life to pay for.

While you’re camping or Picking your Avatar still has needs. You can’t go to the club in jeans and sneakers…not on leather night!

After that shopping trip and a decorating spree that would make Martha Stewart weep, I got to thinking. If one store has freebies wouldn’t others? So, I did a search on –what else- freebies.

clipper's remarks: The only reason I think Google may avoid the sort of death described here is that it has financial momentum on its side. It seems to me that it is big enough (and ugly enough?!) to continue despite the challenges. It has the capacity to include social networking aspects in its searches, and already benefits from being able to crawl content provided by networks created under other platforms.

Twitter tends to be competing with it for my searches now, although only in those areas where my network is likely to have an interest. I am more likely to continue using Google (or other engines, depending on my whim) for areas outside my community's specific domain of interest.

Let’s hope so. Google’s limitations seem more apparent in the context of Web 2. It’s a good search engine, but now compromised by commercial interests IMO - after all it’s not an Open company! - but it can’t provide what collaborative intelligence can.
