The observatory's detectors have been chilled to a staggering minus 273.05C - just a tenth of a degree above what scientists term "absolute zero."

Launched in May, Planck will survey the "oldest light" in the Universe.

Although laboratory set-ups have got closer to absolute zero than Planck, researchers say it is unlikely there is anywhere in space currently that is colder than their astronomical satellite.

This frigidity should ensure the bolometers will be at their most sensitive as they scan the sky for the target light.

Costa Rica Tops 'Green and Happy' List; US 114th

(Newser Summary) – Costa Rica is the happiest, most ecologically friendly country on earth, according to the New Economics Foundation’s Happy Planet Index. The US, on the other hand, came in 114th out of 146, the Guardian reports. The index ranks countries both on the happiness of their citizens and the environmental footprint they leave. Latin American countries dominate the top of the list, while African nations populate the bottom.

Costa Ricans report the highest life satisfaction and live slightly longer on average than Americans, all with a fraction of the environmental footprint. The index “suggests that the path we have been following is, without exception, unable to deliver all three goals: high life satisfaction, high life expectancy, and 'one-planet living,’” says the report’s lead author.

Artist Guernsey Moore did many turn-of-century covers (at the turn of the 20th century, not the 21st), and the June 30, 1900, issue appears to be our first Fourth of July cover. Using colonials as representative of the Fourth was popular before the days of fancy fireworks and Fourth of July parades, although firecrackers showed up early.

The July 4, 1903, cover shows a man setting off firecrackers and milady, in long skirt, is less than thrilled with the noise (covering her ears was a hint). Hmmm, this theme seems familiar: fast forward to the roaring 20s and J.C. Leyendecker’s cover depicting a young boy setting off a cap gun to make patriotic noises and a little girl covering her ears. Apparently, females do not care for loud noises.

But you didn’t really think we would leave our beloved Norman Rockwell out of our celebration, did you? His July 6, 1946, cover shows workmen cleaning the torch on the Statue of Liberty.

Proxy websites allows us to bypass our current ISP’s IP and connect to targeted website with a different IP; thus hiding our actual origin from detectable. Internet users use proxy websites for various reasons, some to access websites potentially blocked by their colleges or workplace, some use it to test their scripts. I frequently used them to test geo-location ads or to check if DNS are properly propagated when I adjust their settings.

I’ve decided to bring this entry back from archive to front page after receiving tones of emails asking for alternative proxies. Instead of the previous 2 proxy websites, here’s my personal collection on proxy websites. Full list after jump.

Meeting Michael Jackson in the mid-1980s was one of the creepier experiences of my life.

There was something about his overall behavior that weirded me out. He seemed, even then, to be a person who was trying with all of his being to step outside of reality and leave it behind.

Emmanuel Lewis, the child star of the hit TV series “Webster,” was with Jackson that evening.

I remember thinking as I left the Garden that Jackson had treated Lewis almost as a pet.

In many ways we descended as a society into a fantasyland, trying to leave the limits and consequences and obligations of the real world behind. Politicians stopped talking about the poor. We built up staggering amounts of debt and called it an economic boom. We shipped jobs overseas by the millions without ever thinking seriously about how to replace them. We let New Orleans drown.

Looked at from a certain distance, all of the Independence Days in one’s life resemble a string of firecrackers. Bang, bang, bang, bang, and suddenly here you are in the present, on another Fourth, thinking about the difference between this one and the ones that came before it — the weather and the menu and the fireworks and the friends and family you celebrate with.

The Declaration of Independence speaks of truths and rights, but we are more likely to understand that document in terms of the freedoms we feel. And yet how often do we really enumerate those freedoms, really assess their costs and count up the obligations they imply?

It’s tempting to seek a kind of refuge in the Saturday-ness of this Fourth, to let the meaning of the holiday slip a little in the interest of a relaxing day in the backyard or at the beach

But there is a special understanding and joy in having struggled for it

US nuns on the run from Vatican inquiry

With interviews and questionnaires, this is a formal inquiry into the activities of women's religious institutions being conducted by Mother Mary Clare Millea, an American nun who lives in Rome.

In addition, a so-called doctrinal assessment has been ordered by the Vatican into the course being followed by an umbrella group of women's religious orders in the US, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, which may not have been toeing the line on issues such as the primacy of the Vatican.

American nuns could be said to have their habits in a twist in the face of two investigations by the Vatican into whether they have come to espouse lifestyles and views on the Church that may just be a tad too modern. Except that many don't wear habits any more. They wear regular clothes, even jeans.

Many nuns have stretched beyond the cloistered life to enter professions like teaching, the law and social work, and often eschew convents in favour of living alone. But, for the Vatican, it seems that American nuns may have strayed a bit too far from the traditional path.

There was a warning shot in March when the US Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a decree telling Catholics that they should desist from practising Reiki, an ancient Japanese healing technique increasingly favoured by nuns involving the laying-on of hands, and very far from the traditional approach that Rome seems to prefer.
