A mysterious light display appearing over Norway last night has left thousands of residents in the north of the country baffled.

The phenomenon began when what appeared to be a blue light seemed to soar up from behind a mountain. It stopped mid-air, then began to circulate.

Curious: A blue-green beam of light was reported to have come shooting out the centre of the spiral

Within seconds a giant spiral had covered the entire sky. Then a green-blue beam of light shot out from its centre - lasting for ten to twelve minutes before disappearing completely.

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute was flooded with telephone calls after the light storm - which astronomers have said did not appear to have been connected to the aurora, or Northern Lights, so common in that area of the world.

Fred Hansen, from Bø in Vesterålen, described the sight as 'like a big fireball that went around, with a great light around it again.'

'It spun and exploded in the sky,' Totto Eriksen from Tromsø told VG Nett.

Seven people including three children were buried alive when a truck carrying debris fell into a trench at a dumping site in north India.

The victims were labourers who earned their living separating construction materials - mainly metal - from debris.

Labourers typically collect the materials and sell them for recycling to add to their daily income of about £1.

The victims died when the soft earth under the truck gave way, causing it to fall into the trench and dump its debris onto the workers.

The accident happened in Chandigarh on Sunday when more than a dozen labourers saw the truck arrive and went to the trench hoping to pick up more goods for recycling.

Rescue teams rushed to the site and three cranes were used to prevent the truck from slipping further into the trench.

The entire rescue operation was carried out manually as officials feared the weight of machines might harm the victims buried under the debris.

RICHMOND, Va. — A 90-year-old Medal of Honor recipient can keep his 21-foot flagpole in his front yard after a homeowner's association dropped its request to remove it, a spokesman for Democratic Virginia Sen. Mark Warner said Tuesday.

The Sussex Square homeowners' association likewise has agreed to drop threats to take legal action against retired Army Col. Van T. Barfoot, Warner spokesman Kevin Hall said.

The association had threatened to take Barfoot to court if he failed to remove the pole from his suburban Richmond home by Friday. It had said the pole violated the neighborhood's aesthetic guidelines.

Neither Barfoot's daughter, Margaret Nicholls, nor homeowners' president Glenn Wilson immediately returned telephone messages.

Dropping the issue effectively ends a request that White House press secretary Robert Gibbs on Monday called "silly."

Warner and Sen. Jim Webb, both Virginia Democrats, had rallied behind Barfoot, a World War II veteran.

They reject a wind farm in Nantucket bay because it will spoil their view. I could care less that Al Gore has made a bigger mess of the environment with his nine concerts than years of single toilet paper use by the entire population could compensate for.

I am tired of hearing that it’s my responsibility to reduce this myth of global warming. I’m tired of being told I’m “addicted to oil,” when the country’s entire infrastructure is built on the automobile. These people are idiots. I'd like to throw them all into Nantucket Bay where they'll be Aquaman's problem instead.

OUTRAGE: Chilmark resident Andy Goldman and his wife, Susan Heilbron, are opposed to Gov. Deval Patrick’s plan to build 166 450-foot turbines between Gay Head cliffs and Cuttyhunk Island.

Blazing a trail for renewable energy, Gov. Deval Patrick is alienating Martha’s Vineyard’s liberal rich and famous by pushing a plan to lease state waters for 166 450-foot-high wind turbines between the pristine vacation spots of Gay Head cliffs and Cuttyhunk Island.

“I plead guilty to thinking global warming is a real problem, but that doesn’t mean everybody who has a plan with the word ‘green’ has to be supported,” Goldman said.

James Feiner, a Vineyard real estate broker, claims he lost a $2 million-plus home sale on Gay Head this fall when his client - an environmentalist, no less - got wind of Patrick’s plan and bolted.

A mortified Feiner wasn’t even aware it was being discussed.

“For them to run a band (of turbines) from Cuttyhunk to Nomans Land is idiotic,” Feiner said.

So Greenpeace, the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental groups have pushed manufacturers such as Kimberly-Clark (Cottonelle) and Procter & Gamble (Charmin) to stop using wood from virgin forests to make tissue products.

Environmentalists said other countries — particularly in South America, Africa and Asia — seem to be OK with "soft enough."

Greenpeace has come up with a "toilet paper guide," which looks at recycled content and the use of chlorine bleaches.

Probably no surprise that brands with names such as Green Forest, 365, Earth Friendly, Natural Value and Seventh Generation scored the highest on the Greenpeace scale.

Bringing up the rear: Charmin, Cottonelle, Angel Soft and, of course, Quilted Northern, which sounds thick enough to keep someone warm on a cold night in Minnesota.

Bush is more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize than Obama.

I think Bush is deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize not because of Afghanistan or Iraq (although I do think Afghanistan and Iraq are ultimately better off without al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, respectively). I believe Bush is more deserving because he initiated the largest foreign aid humanitarian effort ever undertaken by a single country.

During his 2003 State of the Union Address, President Bush launched The President's Emergency Relief Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).² He asked Congress to commit $15 billion over five years to this program.

According to a study released by Stanford University School of Medicine in April 2009, 1.2 million people (mostly in Africa) are alive who would have otherwise not been as a direct result of PEPFAR.

The policies of President Obama haven't saved a single life.
