Scientists have warned Queensland beachgoers to stay away from a coastal algal bloom that grows so large, it can be seen from space.

Often mistaken for oil slicks, Trichodesmium, or sea sawdust, is a blue-green algae also know as whale food, sea scum and whale sperm, for its "disgusting" likeness to a whale's reproductive fluid.

It blooms in the warm, tropical and subtropical waters off Queensland's coast. Outbreaks have been recorded between Golden Beach, on the Sunshine Coast, and Wynnum, on Brisbane's bayside, in the past two weeks.

"Winds and tides sometimes result in these clumps of algal cells becoming so large they can be seen from space," the Department of Environment and Resource Management's chief scientist Dr Dave Rissik said.

"However, the algae don't survive for long on the surface for various reasons
