The dead bodies of the 5 sisters killed two days ago in Jabalia, the Gaza Strip

Over and over again, we have heard the familiar Israeli refrain ‘We are not targeting Palestinians; we are only targeting Hamas and their infrastructure.’

We have hear this for seven days now, while bodies have staked up on the floors of hospitals, and the casualty rate has climbed into the thousands. We know how many of the victims are children and women; we know that the targets have often been schools and hospitals.

Even so, the Israeli refrain continues: ‘We are not targeting Palestinian civilians.’ “We are not targeting Palestinian civilians.’ As if saying it enough times will make it a reality.

Late one night, five sisters huddled together in their beds. The air strikes had been ongoing for a couple of days, and it was easier for them to face the night with each other, than trying to suffer through another sleepless night alone.

Today is the opening day of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, in Harbin, China. The festival lasts for one month, and features large ice and snow sculptures, ice lanterns, swimming in the icy Songhua River and more. The northern hemisphere is a hospitable place for ice festivals these days, so in that spirit, here is a collection of recent photographs of all things frozen, and some of the ways we live and play with ice. Researchers at the University of Rochester have shown that the human brain-once thought to be a seriously flawed decision maker-is actually hard-wired to allow us to make the best decisions possible with the information we are given. The findings are published in today's issue of the journal Neuron.

Neuroscientists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky received a 2002 Nobel Prize for their 1979 research that argued humans rarely make rational decisions. Since then, this has become conventional wisdom among cognition researchers

Contrary to Kahnneman and Tversky's research, Alex Pouget, associate professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University of Rochester, has shown that people do indeed make optimal decisions-but only when their unconscious brain makes the choice.

Once we started looking at the decisions our brains make without our knowledge, we found that they almost always reach the right decision, given the information they had to work with.
