Each year Leslie's 8th graders at Saint Joseph's School in Crescent Springs, Kentucky have a service project. She shared the story of child slaves with her class. They adopted the issue for their service project.

At the time it took $560 for our partner on the ground to rescue, rehabilitate, and reunite the children with their parents. The 50 eighth graders set a high goal -- they wanted to rescue and rehabilitate 40 kids a half a world away.

These 8th graders wanted to raise $22,400. Josh, one of the students, summed it up for everyone, "Everybody wants to save a life. We kind of feel like we'll be saving 40 lives if we can raise enough money to rescue the kids."

They raised over $28,500 in just six weeks! That means children are free today who would still be enslaved if these kids had not heard their story. And acted! For the rest of their lives they will know that they were able to change a life. They will know, 'I am the change!'

SOME 8500 years ago, people in what is now China started using written symbols to communicate and store knowledge. At first they used pictures to represent words and ideas - a characteristic shared by other early scripts such as cuneiform and hieroglyphs. These pictographic scripts have since fallen into disuse, superseded by more abstract writing systems such as the one you are reading now. All except one, that is.

In the mountains of south-west China, a dwindling number of priests practising an animist religion still read and write with pictures. Theirs is the last living pictographic script anywhere in the world.

The writing system is called Dongba and it has been used for about 1000 years to record and guide the religious traditions of the Naxi, a 300,000-strong people living in Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. The Dongba script has more than 2000 pictographs,

Smarter brains tend to be bigger—at least in certain locations. Researchers have fingered parts of the parietal and frontal lobes as well as a structure called the anterior cingulate as important for superior cognition.

Some studies suggest that the brains of brighter people use less energy to solve certain problems than those of people with lower aptitudes do. But under certain circumstances, scientists have also observed higher neuronal power consumption in individuals with superior mental capacities.

People often overestimate the importance of intellectual ability. Practice and perseverance contribute more to accomplishment than being smart does.

Do economists need brains?

clipper's remarks: For the past four years, a group of leading neuroeconomists and neuroscientists has met to refine questions about the brain and economic behaviour. Researchers trained in both neuroscience and economics are entering the field.

Daniel Kahneman, a Princeton University psychologist who in 2002 won the Nobel prize in economics for his contribution to behavioural economics, is an enthusiastic supporter of the new field. “In many areas of economics, it will dominate, because it works,” says Mr Kahneman.

A new school of economists is controversially turning to neuroscience to improve the dismal science

In 1996 Mr LeDoux, who by day is a professor of neuroscience at New York University, published a book, “The Emotional Brain: The Mysterious Underpinnings of Emotional Life”, that helped to inspire what is today one of the liveliest and most controversial areas of economic research: neuroeconomics.

These new neuroeconomists saw that it might be possible to move economics away from its simplified model of rational, self-interested, utility-maximising decision-making. Instead of hypothesising about Homo economicus, they could base their research on what actually goes on inside the head of Homo sapiens.

The dismal science had already been edging in that direction thanks to behavioural economics.

Early successes for neuroeconomists came from using neuroscience to shed light on some of the apparent flaws in H. economicus noted by the behaviouralists.
