Robot engineers call this “mechatronics”: the union of mechanics, optics, electronics, computers and software. Some factory robots are now smart enough to be released from their safety cages to work among humans. And as they become cleverer and more dexterous, they are starting to move from factories to offices and homes.

A robot is defined not by its appearance, but by how it is controlled. The more automated it is and the more it can determine its behaviour, the more likely it is to count as a robot. Many single-function service robots are already familiar

Vision and touch are improving fast enough for the cage soon to be removed.

As with industrial robots, the first service robots to enter production will be shaped by their job

Tags: robotics, dexterity, economy, industrialization, technology

<clipSource>http://www.economist.com/business/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11575170</clipSource>

cutest baby photo ever!

clipped by: society

clipped by: Silkweaver
clipper's remarks: This new mathematic model for society’s evolution is particularly interesting because not only it reveals a logic behind the large numbers of cooperators that we know exist in all human societies, but also it gives us a glimpse of the principles that can help “pushing” them into a better, fairer, path.

Evolutionary game theory is a mathematical approach used to study (and predict) the evolution of social interactions, in which the study of conflict and decision-making is treated – like its name indicates – as a game.

Clip Source: www.physorg.com

Why do humans cooperate in things as diverse as environment conservation or the creation of fairer societies, even when they don’t receive anything in exchange or, worst, they might even be penalized?

This is a question that has puzzled academics for centuries, especially since in evolution the basis for the “survival of the fittest” is, after all, selfishness.

But in an article just published in the journal Nature, three Portuguese theoretical physicists develop a mathematical model capable of providing a way out from this conundrum through the introduction of social diversity - a ubiquitous characteristic of modern social networks - and suggesting that that the act of cooperation is dependent on one’s social context/ranking

when social diversity was taken into account the numbers of those cooperating increased in direct relation to the system diversity.

<div style="margin-bottom: because it will take too long and increased production will never keep
up with demand, thus prices are unlikely to go down.

Gore sees this massive transformation as a one-off

she was locked in a room, tortured,
 abused and threatened with death

 the common infection	of HIV/AIDS.
After a couple	years, the owners
 became comfortable	with her.
They thought Ganga	was too broken
 and hopeless to	resist them,
so they stopped	keeping a close
 eye on her.

One night she escaped, fleeing home to her village.
