Neuroscientists describe the mechanics of pleasure.

Why does payday feel good? You can’t eat money, and it can’t have your babies — so how did that 'ker-ching!' feeling become so sweet?

Working with rats, neuroscientists have gained an insight into how the brain comes to take pleasure in abstract rewards.

Animals, they suggest, have a reward system that focuses on specific outcomes — what an action would achieve — which in turn plugs into a more general system that lets us know what feels good.

Understanding how these two systems interact could help us understand what happens when they go wrong, such as in drug addiction or in general failures of willpower. The results are reported in Nature ¹.

It’s hard to explain why people work for things that are not intrinsically gratifying, says neuroscientist Geoffrey Schoenbaum of the University of Maryland in Baltimore. “People are not normally working for primary rewards, such as food or sex, but for proxies, such as money.”

The Car Fountain

A fountain in Rome holds a car in the air.

This unusual fountain set up in Rome, Italy is the work of Spanish artist Juan Galdeano who wanted to make a statement that would hopefully draw attention to the issue of global warming.

The fountain was built to look like it’s sustaining a hatchback Seat Ibiza, when in reality the car is being supported by an intricate installation. Let’s face it, that would have to be quite a powerful jet of water to sustain the car. The fountain is available to the public from June 5 to August 10.

Flagstaff is the world’s first
“International Dark-Sky City”

On October 24th, 2001, the City of Flagstaff became the world’s first “International Dark-Sky City.” The designation was awarded by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA), a nearly 10,000 member tax-exempt non-profit organization dedicated to building awareness of the problems of light pollution as it affects astronomy and the public, and to promote quality outdoor lighting.

The Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition (FDSC) celebrates, promotes, and protects the glorious dark skies of Flagstaff and northern Arizona. Flagstaff is the world's first International Dark-Sky City.

We are also a dark-sky refuge for hundreds of resident amateur astronomers and thousands of visiting ones.

How to Keep Cool without Running Your AC

Are there environmentally friendly alternatives to keeping cool indoors without running the air conditioning?

According to Harvey Sachs of the non-profit American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the movement of air over the skin is what’s key to keeping the body cool. So instead of turning on that A.C., see which direction the breeze is blowing outside (no matter how minimal it may be), and then open a few windows strategically to try to get it flowing through the house from end-to-end or side-to-side.

If the breeze alone isn’t enough, apply some fan power. Even small tabletop fans, which can be had for $30 or so at Target and similar stores, can really whip the air around. Placing one facing in by the window where air is coming in, and one at an opposite window positioned to blow warm air out, can create a nice “wind tunnel” effect in pulling air through the house.

Liverpool is 'most musical city'

Liverpool has been voted England's most musical city in a national campaign set up by the Arts Council.

The home of The Beatles and The Zutons - and current European Capital of Culture - took 49% of the vote in an online poll set up by the funding body.

Sheffield - which brought the world the Arctic Monkeys and Pulp - came second, while Manchester came third.

Liverpool Culture Company music manager Gordon Ross said: "The city today has a phenomenal pool of talent."

a new study in the journal Nature clarifying what’s happening with the oceans in a heating world (the heat held in by a building greenhouse blanket has largely accumulated in the oceans and physics demands that it will eventually add to atmospheric warming).

As you may be aware, those rejecting the enormous body of evidence pointing to a growing human influence on climate had embraced some transitory findings implying that the oceans were cooling. This new work may help resolve that particular line of debate. The formula holds: more CO2 = warming world = less ice + higher seas + lots of changing climate patterns.

The study, by Australian and American researchers, reviewed millions of measurements of ocean temperatures taken using a particular instrument on submarines and other vessels over four decades. The researchers found a subtle error that, when fixed, shows that the rate at which seas warmed and rose between 1961 and 2003 was about 50 percent greater than previous estimates.
