clipper's remarks: Just wanted to make sure everyone knows that we released a new version of clipmarks (version 3.5) that supports the just-released Firefox3. We made some real nice improvements to the orange lines so they should more accurately outline elements on the page to clip.

Coffee Drinkers Have Slightly Lower Death Rates, Study Finds

A new study has good news for coffee drinkers: Regular coffee drinking (up to 6 cups per day) is not associated with increased deaths in either men or women. In fact, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption is associated with a somewhat smaller rate of death from heart disease.

"Coffee consumption was not associated with a higher risk of mortality in middle-aged men and women. The possibility of a modest benefit of coffee consumption on heart disease, cancer, and other causes of death needs to be further investigated."

Here is the first known photograph of the great grandfather of modern digital computers – but you couldn’t use it on the train or take it jogging with you.

The panoramic black and white image, which has been unearthed in the archives at The University of Manchester, shows a development version of ‘The Baby’ taking up a whole room with its towering Post Office racks and jumble of wiring.

The Baby was built using metal Post Office racks, hundreds of valves or vacuum tubes and the keyboard was a series of push buttons and switches, mounted vertically. Instead of a screen, the output was read directly off the face of a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT).

In modern terms the prototype Baby had a RAM (random access memory) of just 32 locations or ‘words’. Each word in the RAM consisted of 32 bits (binary digits) and so The Baby had a grand total of 1024 bits of memory – and a computing speed of 1.2 milliseconds per instruction.

The amazing thing is that it may not be more than a few years away! Any additional help we can get from Washington will make a huge difference. I hope to see this be a central issue in the upcoming election.

Backers point out that electricity is significantly cheaper than oil right now and that a surge in electric-powered cars could reduce national oil consumption by millions of barrels a day while curbing tailpipe emissions of greenhouse gases.

BAD boys really do get the girls, according to new research.

This week's New Scientist says two studies in the US have found that men with antisocial personality traits are more likely to have a prolific sex life.

The so-called 'dark triad' traits include impulsiveness, narcissism, thrill-seeking and deceitfulness, it says.

One of the studies, a survey of 35,000 people in 57 countries, found a clear link between dark triad traits and the reproductive success of males.

"It is universal across cultures for high dark triad scorers to be more active in short-term mating,'' David Schmitt, of Bradley University in the US, told New Scientist.

"They are more likely to try and poach other people's partners for a brief affair.''

Another study found that males who scored higher in the dark triad personality traits had a greater number of partners and a desire for short relationships.

Healthy lifestyle triggers genetic changes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Comprehensive lifestyle changes including a better diet and more exercise can lead not only to a better physique, but also to swift and dramatic changes at the genetic level, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

In a small study, the researchers tracked 30 men with low-risk prostate cancer who decided against conventional medical treatment such as surgery and radiation or hormone therapy.

The men underwent three months of major lifestyle changes, including eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and soy products, moderate exercise such as walking for half an hour a day, and an hour of daily stress management methods such as meditation.

As expected, they lost weight, lowered their blood pressure and saw other health improvements. But the researchers found more profound changes when they compared prostate biopsies taken before and after the lifestyle changes.

Researchers from the University of Picardie Jules Verne were curious about what happens in the brain to cause an erection when men are exposed to certain images. Specifically, they wondered whether "mirror neurons," are involved in the erection response. Mirror neurons fire both when you do something and when you observe that same thing being done by another. So Harold Mouras and his colleagues showed porn videos to eight men while scanning their brains. (The videos were mixed in with fishing documentaries and other footage that isn't erotic, er, to most people.) Meanwhile, they used a "penile plethysmograph" to determine when the men got erections and how hard they were. From New Scientist:

Interestingly, the volume of the erections correlated with the strength of activation in a part of the brain called the pars opercularis, which is known to display mirror neuron activity. Even more intriguing, the brain activation, say the researchers, precedes the penile response.

A bizarre practice in which some creatures eat their own mothers’ skin has turned up in more than one species—suggest the strategy is at least 100 million years old, researchers say.

Maternal skin-eating was first reported found in a worm-like amphibian known as Boulengerula taitanus. Now scientists say they have observed it in a second, similar animal, Siphonops annulatus.

The two are distantly related caecilians, members of an order of tropical amphibians that resemble earthworms but have vertebrate characteristics such as jaws and teeth.

The odd feeding technique is called dermatophagy, from the Greek words for skin-eating.

The complicated growth patterns of a group of common marine worms appear to be governed by simple mathematical rules built into their genes, a new report suggests.

The report, which appears in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, suggests that the appendages that grow along the bodies of some species of polychaete worms follow a mathematical sequence known as the Fibonacci string sequence.

Polychaetes, sometimes called bristle worms, have a segmented body, each with a pair of fleshy appendages covered in bristles.

In one group, these appendages, known as dorsal cirri, grow in characteristic patterns of alternating short and long versions.

The researchers converted the sequence of long and short appendages into a series of zeros and ones. Next, they entered that sequence into an online database of number sequences.

"We're trying to find simple mathematical rules that explain the biological observations" Glasby says.

European astronomers have announced a remarkable breakthrough in the field of extra-solar planets. Using the HARPS instrument at the ESO La Silla Observatory, they have found a triple system of super-Earths around the star HD 40307. Moreover, looking at their entire sample studied with HARPS, the astronomers count a total of 45 candidate planets with a mass below 30 Earth masses and an orbital period shorter than 50 days. This implies that one solar-like star out of three harbours such planets.

"Does every single star harbour planets and, if yes, how many?" wonders planet hunter Michel Mayor from Geneva Observatory. "We may not yet know the answer but we are making huge progress towards it."

Since the discovery in 1995 of a planet around the star 51 Pegasi by Mayor and Didier Queloz, more than 270 exoplanets have been found, mostly around solar-like stars. Most of these planets are giants, such as Jupiter or Saturn
