So it comes as little surprise that the New Acropolis Museum, which stands at the foot of one of the great achievements of human history, is a quiet work, especially by the standards of its flamboyant Swiss-born architect, Bernard Tschumi. But in mastering his ego, Mr. Tschumi pulled off an impressive accomplishment: a building that is both an enlightening meditation on the Parthenon and a mesmerizing work in its own right. Until now, most scientists believed that it used the bulk of that energy to fuel electrical impulses that neurons employ to communicate with one another. Turns out, though, that is only part of the story.

A new study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA indicates that two thirds of the brain's energy budget is used to help neurons or nerve cells "fire'' or send signals. The remaining third, however, is used for what study co-author Wei Chen, a radiologist at the University of Minnesota Medical School, refers to as "housekeeping," or cell-health maintenance.

Their goal: to determine whether ATP production is linked to brain activity by measuring the energy expended during different levels of consciousness.

Sure enough, ATP levels appeared to vary with brain activity

Tags: brain, power, energy, atp, consciousness

<clipSource>http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=why-does-the-brain-need-s&sc=WR_20080506</clipSource>

21 Excuses for not Having Sex

clipped by: CrazyRedHead
clipper's remarks: — You can’t stop thinking about all the stuff you have to do tomorrow, and what you really want to do is find a pencil and a piece of paper.
— You have your teeth-whitening equipment in.
— You are bloody tired.
— You have hiccups.
— He hasn’t shaved.
— You think the heating might still be on.
Metastasis, the spread of cancer throughout the body, can be explained by the fusion of a cancer cell with a white blood cell in the original tumor, according to Yale School of Medicine researchers, who say that this single event can set the stage for cancer’s migration to other parts of the body.

Their work was Published in the May issue of Nature Reviews Cancer. The studies, spanning 15 years, have revealed that the newly formed hybrid of the cancer cell and white blood cell adapts the white blood cell’s natural ability to migrate around the body, while going through the uncontrolled cell division of the original cancer cell. This causes a metastatic cell to emerge, which like a white blood cell, can migrate through tissue, enter the circulatory system and travel to other organs.

“This is a unifying explanation for metastasis

“To date, the fusion theory and the considerable evidence supporting it have largely been overlooked by the cancer research community,” said Pawelek.

Tags: medicine, cancer

<clipSource>http://physorg.com/news128708015.html</clipSource>

The artist who brings walls to life

clipped by: michellezm

Clip Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

Before the operation, Adam overheard Tessier saying to his anaesthetist in French, "We're entering a patch of fog without a compass."

Clip Source: lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk

Christian Constantine was born with the severest facial deformities his doctors had ever seen. Since a baby, he has been through more than 35 agonising operations to rebuild his features.

"I didn't know anything was wrong until Christian was born and I saw my doctor's eyes," she says. "Then they put me to sleep again immediately. I didn't see him for three days. Not until the nurses said, 'First we're going to show a Polaroid picture of baby to mummy.' That's when I insisted on actually seeing him. He was very wrong-looking indeed. But I felt love at first sight."

The doctors were mystified.
