Applied carefully, High Dynamic Range-technique (HDR) can create incredibly beautiful pictures which blur our sense of the difference between reality and illusion.

This post covers 35 extremely beautiful and perfectly executed HDR-pictures. Some of them might look surreal, too colorful, even magic or fake, but they are not — keep in mind that they’ve all been developed out of usual photos, and not a single image is an illustration.

Cloud Iridescence

It shows a phenomenon known as "iridescence" that occurs somewhat commonly in thin clouds, or the thin edges of thicker clouds, as is the case here. These colors are caused by diffraction of sunlight as it passes through the cloud. The sun itself is just above the top edge of the picture. While the colors are real, the're quite exaggerated here so they're easily visible. To the naked eye, the glare of the sun would normally render these colors almost, if not completely, invisible. They're more easily visible to the naked eye if you have dark sunglasses on. Even so, at their best they're most often washed out and pale, but they're visible if you just look.

Wait till the sun has disappeared behind the edge of a passing cloud, and look to see if you can catch a glimpse of some of these colors in the edges of the cloud. Quite often, you can see them, and once you do, you'll have seen something beautiful that most people never know about, or bother to notice.

The ancient catastrophe that gave birth to the Moon may have produced additional satellites that lingered in Earth's skies for tens of millions of years.

A new model suggests moonlets may have once occupied the two Earth-Moon Lagrangian points, regions in space where the gravitational tug of the Earth and the Moon exactly cancel each other out. Objects trapped in these points are called Trojans and can remain stationary forever if left undisturbed.

Scientists think the Moon was created when Earth was struck by a Mars-sized object some 4.5 billion years ago.

"The giant impact that likely led to the formation of the Moon launched a lot of material into Earth orbit, and some could well have been caught in the Lagrangian points," says study team member Jack Lissauer of NASA Ames Research Center in California, US.

Once captured, the Trojan satellites likely remained in their orbits for up to 100 million years,

The location of the site in the tony Westwood neighborhood reflects the high-end shopping experience it intends to create for the flashy $109,000 Tesla Roadster.

The fancy showroom near Beverly Hills takes its inspiration from Apple stores, Musk said.

"The Apple stores have worked out well. It's a fantastic consumer experience," Musk told AutoWeek. "We wanted a nontraditional automotive experience, and we have it."

The company plans to make a luxury sedan next year called the Whitestar

The Roaster will have a range of 220 miles per charge and the mileage equivalent of 135 miles per gallon.

The sex appeal of the Roadster is rooted in the electric motor as well: with powerful torque, it can go from standing still to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds.

Tesla can lay claim to putting all-electric cars back on the map, with its racy Roadster. But it certainly won't be alone for long.

New York City in HDR

Here is my small collection of Tone Mapped - High Dynamic Range Images of New York City. Most of these images were shot with three to six separate exposures to create each image. I always shoot my HDR photos with my camera on a tripod to help ensure that the images will align correctly during the creation of the high dynamic image. After the HDR image is converted to a tone mapped file, I will use Photoshop to make contrast and saturation adjustments to help give the photos the look I am going for. It is true that if you are looking at an image (such as a JPG or PNG file) on the web somewhere it is not actually an HDR image but most likely a tone mapped LDR (low dynamic range) image from an HDR source file. If you click on any of the images it will take you to my Flickr page for that specific photo. I hope you enjoy the photos and please do not use them without permission.

Post-War Suicides May Exceed Combat Deaths, U.S. Says (Update1)

May 5 (Bloomberg) -- The number of suicides among veterans of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may exceed the combat death toll because of inadequate mental health care, the U.S. government's top psychiatric researcher said.

Community mental health centers, hobbled by financial limits, haven't provided enough scientifically sound care, especially in rural areas, said Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He briefed reporters today at the American Psychiatric Association's annual meeting in Washington.

Insel echoed a Rand Corporation study published last month that found about 20 percent of returning U.S. soldiers have post- traumatic stress disorder or depression, and only half of them receive treatment.

Baby rescued from storm drain

A couple of Fall River men are being credited with saving the life of a baby who accidentally fell into a storm drain over the weekend.

The storm drain is covered now, but it was open enough and slippery enough on Saturday night for a 21-month-old baby to fall in after sliding out of a minivan in the area of Fourth and Morgan streets.

Hebert and another man, Pedro Davila, heard the mother's cries for help. He immediately grabbed some tools and ran to the scene.

When the men pulled the baby out, she was blue after being in the water for about a minute and a half. They started CPR immediately.

The baby, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence. She was expected to be OK.

Hebert, who said he has many medical and financial problems has sometimes wondered "why Jesus keeps me on this Earth."

He told a Fall River newspaper, “I got my answer tonight. It was to save that little girl.”
