The economy will be much more volatile and much more competitive. In the continuous fervor to create new institutions, it will become increasingly difficult to sustain old ones. New political parties, new social groupings, thousands of new manias and movements and millions of new companies will pop up over the next few decades. Large corporations that don't figure out how to combine permanence with perpetual change will be swept away.

Highest birth rate in Europe + highest divorce rate + highest percentage of women working outside the home = the best country in the world in which to live. There has to be something wrong with this equation. Put those three factors together - loads of children, broken homes, absent mothers - and what you have, surely, is a recipe for misery and social chaos. But no.

Tired of the United States and the other 190-odd nations on Earth?

If a small team of Silicon Valley millionaires get their way, in a few years, you could have a new option for global citizenship: A permanent, quasi-sovereign nation floating in international waters.

With a $500,000 donation from PayPal founder Peter Thiel, a Google engineer and a former Sun Microsystems programmer have launched The Seasteading Institute, an organization dedicated to creating experimental ocean communities "with diverse social, political, and legal systems."

"Decades from now, those looking back at the start of the century will understand that Seasteading was an obvious step towards encouraging the development of more efficient, practical public-sector models around the world," Thiel said in a statement.

Fusion could one day generate limitless cheap energy from little more than water, while emitting no greenhouse gases. We look at its promise as the ultimate power panacea for a warming world.

A total of €10 billion (about A$16.7 billion) has been earmarked for the construction and initial operation of ITER, a giant fusion reactor. It will generate a cloud of super-hot plasma in which isotopes of hydrogen will fuse to form helium, releasing vast amounts of energy.

If successful, the project will realise a dream that has preoccupied physicists for many decades: the harnessing of the power that drives the Sun. The potential is, to say the least, immense.

Fusion plants could one day generate billions of watts of power, entirely replacing 19th century coal and 20th century gas, oil and nuclear fission, and all without producing any carbon dioxide or long-lived radioactive waste.

Biomimicry is a new science that studies nature’s best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems. Studying a leaf to invent a better solar cell is an example of this “innovation inspired by nature.”

Link between clouds and earthquakes

geophysicists Guangmeng Guo and Bin Wang of Nanyang Normal University in Henan, China, noticed a gap in the clouds in satellite images from December 2004 that exactly matched the location of the main fault in southern Iran.

The gap in the clouds stretched for hundreds of kilometres and was visible for several hours.

It also remained in the same place despite the clouds around it moving

Thermal images of the ground showed that the temperature was higher along the fault.

On February 22nd 2005 - 69 days later - a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the area, killing 600 people.

In December 2005 a similar cloud formation was spotted and 64 days later an earthquake with a magnitude of six hit the region.

Geophysicists argue that there could be a number of reasons for the link between clouds and earthquakes.

They say that an eruption of hot gases from inside the fault could have caused water in the clouds to evaporate.

Another theory is that when rocks are squeezed, positively-charged ions form

Once shaped, cover and return to freezer. (5-10 minutes)

While cupcake shapes are chilling, begin to heat up your chocolate bark.

Brown chocolate bark for the bottoms. Pink or white chocolate for the tops.

Take the cupcake shaped mixture and dip bottoms into the melted chocolate - just to the point where the mounded shape starts. Remove from chocolate, turn upside down and wiggle so that the excess starts to slide down slightly. Then lay on the wax paper upside down. If you want them to be lollipops, then go ahead and insert the lollipop sticks while the chocolate is still wet. Continue with rest of the cupcakes. You can also leave some without the sticks. They’re just as cute as Cupcake Bites.

Dry completely. (15-20 minutes)

TIP: Let the pink chocolate sit for a few minutes after heating to thicken. This will help it from dripping down the sides of the cupcake.

Millions of starfish-like creatures have been found in a novel colony on a sub-sea mountaintop south of New Zealand, aiding knowledge of mysterious seamounts that dot the oceans

A dense aggregation of brittlestars on a seamount rock with arms feeding in the water current taken during the recent month-long survey of the Macquarie Ridge

Fewer than 200 seamounts, which are mountains that rise from the ocean floor without piercing the surface, have been surveyed out of an estimated 100,000 around the world.

Tens of millions of tiny brittlestars living arm tip to arm tip were found on a peak 90 metres below the sea surface on the sub-sea Macquarie Ridge, which stretches 1400 kilometres south of New Zealand towards Antarctica

"As far as we know, such aggregations (of brittlestars) have not been observed before on the top of a seamount," says Ashley Rowden of New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research
